2003 Ford Ranger - Antifreeze - Vehicle Specific

Your engine coolant, also called antifreeze, serves several purposes. First, it is circulated throughout the engine to the radiator to keep your engine at a stable operating temperature. Low coolant levels can lead to overheating, which can damage your engine. Second, antifreeze has a lower freezing point than water, which keeps it in a fluid state during cold weather. Coolant also keeps corrosion down inside the engine that may be caused by water. If you notice a coolant leak, it should be taken care of as soon as possible to avoid damage to your engine. You may notice your temperature gauge reading higher than usual, your heater may stop working, or you also notice steam under your hood. When you need coolant, visit O'Reilly Auto Parts for the right coolant for your vehicle. We carry a variety of coolant made for your car, truck, or SUV.

I need coolant, what kind???

As long as it's a "Global" mix it will work. G5 if you want OE. Different brands may be yellow or greenish yellow. Make sure the jug says all makes all models.

"All makes/models" coolant is essentially the same thing as Dexcool. I would NOT put Dexcool in any vehicle that wasn't designed for it. You know that Ford is slowly switching over to Dexcool in some 2011 vehicles, particularly the new v8s in the Mustang and F150? They would have started in 2010, but the 4.6 and 5.4 v8s were NOT DESIGNED for it, so they waited one more year for the new engines to come out, which are already designed for Dexcool.

Look at the back of a jug of G-05. It specifically states it is NOT compatible with OAT (organic acid technology AKA Dexcool) coolants.

Google Dexcool sludge and see what happens when you use Dexcool in a system not designed for it. Heck, it even happens in some systems that ARE designed for it.

I'll say it one more time: Do not use "all makes/models" coolant in your truck! G-05 ONLY!!!

How to Change Antifreeze in a 2002 Ford Ranger

by Kyle McBride

Auto Engine image by Andrew Breeden from Fotolia.com

Ford equipped the 2002 Ranger with a coolant-filled cooling system. Engine coolant provides protection from freezing and boiling, maximizes cooling efficiency and provides corrosion protection to the engine and cooling components. Maintain the engine coolant at the correct concentration and level and replace it according to the maintenance schedule for your engine and coolant type in order to sustain these protections.

2.3 Liter Engine

Step 1

Open the hood. Allow the engine to cool completely before opening the cooling system.

Step 2

Remove the cap from the coolant reservoir bottle located on the passenger side of the engine compartment adjacent to the windshield washer bottle.

Step 3

Place the drain pan under the radiator's draincock. Open the draincock and allow the coolant to drain into the drain pan.

Step 4

Place the drain pan under the radiator's lower hose. Loosen the hose clamp holding the hose to the radiator's lower pipe with a screwdriver. Grasp the hose firmly and twist it to break the seal between the hose and the pipe. Pull the hose off the radiator and allow the coolant to completely drain.

Step 5

Close the draincock and reinstall the radiator's lower hose.

Step 6

Fill the coolant reservoir bottle with coolant to the "Max Fill" line.

Step 7

Start the engine. Run the engine for approximately ten seconds at 2,500 revolutions per minute (rpm) then turn off the engine.

Step 8

Fill the coolant reservoir bottle to 1/2 inch above the maximum fill line. Put the cap on the bottle.

Step 9

Start the engine. Run the engine for approximately eight minutes at 2,500 rpm or until the thermostat opens. Maintain 2,500 rpm for an additional three minutes.

Step 10

Increase engine speed to 4,000 rpm for five seconds, then return engine speed to 2,500 rpm for an additional three minutes. Repeat two times. Check for leaks.

Stop the engine and allow it to sit for 20 minutes. Top off the coolant in the reservoir bottle to the maximum fill line.

3.0 and 4.0 Liter Engines

Step 1

Open the hood. Allow the engine to cool completely before opening the cooling system.

Step 2

Turn the radiator's pressure relief cap 1/2 turn counterclockwise to the first cap stop position. Press and turn the cap counterclockwise once satisfied that no pressure remains in the cooling system. Remove the cap.

Step 3

Jack the front of the truck up and support it on jack stands.

Step 4

Get under the front of the truck. Remove the two bolts holding the radiator's lower cover with a wrench. Remove the cover.

Step 5

Place the drain pan under the radiator's draincock. Open the draincock and allow the coolant to drain.

Step 6

Close the draincock, then re-install the radiator's lower cover.

Step 7

Remove the jack stands and lower the truck to the ground.

Step 8

Install the pressure cap. Fill the coolant reservoir bottle up to the maximum fill line.

Step 9

Turn the temperature selector knob on the dashboard to the full warm position, then start the engine and run it until it reaches operating temperature.

Step 10

Add coolant to the reservoir bottle until the fluid is between the coolant fill level marks.

Step 11

Turn off the engine. Allow the cooling system to cool completely. Recheck the coolant level in the reservoir bottle and add coolant until the fluid is between the coolant fill level marks.

Repeat Steps 9 through 11 until no more coolant needs to be added.
