What is the Window Motor/Regulator Assembly all about?

The window regulator typically has over a dozen components that help it move up or down in a very specific fashion throughout the entire raising or lowering of your windows. These components all work together in two unique assemblies: the scissor style window regulator and the cable operated window regulator.

There are scissor-style window regulators that operate like a giant pair of scissors inside your door. They’re usually almost flat when your window is all the way down and in a near perfect X when the window is all the way up. You can look at a scissor style regulator as having several thick pieces of steel that keep the window in place. It’s sturdy, but requires a strong motor that often wears out before everything else.

Cable-operated window regulators use a near vertical cable to help the window get into the right position. It’s a more compact design that puts less stress on the motor. But it is also more susceptible towards breaking due to the increased stress that the pulley and cable must harness to raise and lower your window. In most cases, a cable operated window regulator is composed of one thick piece of metal with a pulley and wire attached to it -- along with a more compact motor.

The electric motor is designed to withstand a certain number of raises and lowerings of your window. While the regulator helps hold the window in place, the motor provides the force needed to make the window stay exactly where you like.

Keep in mind:

  • A window regulator assembly is composed of two components: a motor and a regulator. These components when replaced typically require you to deal with the removal of your door panel, clips, and in certain cases, even the removal of rivets and the specific removal of multiple related components.

  • A window regulator assembly is usually a complicated piece of equipment that can require specialized tools and a lot of patience -- work best left to a professional mechanic.

How it's done:

  • The inside door panel is removed
  • The electrical connection is disconnected and motor removed
  • The window regulator is replaced
  • The window motor is reinstalled
  • The inside door panel is reinstalled and the window is tested

Our recommendation:

If your window is gradually beginning to slow down it’s often better to take care of it while the window can be shut. Once a window regulator stops working completely, it rarely starts working again unless you have other issues that can be identified by a mechanical inspection.

You should have it inspected by a professional mechanic who can test the multiple components that provide the power needed to make the window and regulator assembly work properly.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Window Motor/Regulator Assembly?

  • If your window is going down ever more slowly, stopping, or needs several presses of the power window button to close, chances are your motor is wearing out.

  • The window regulator assembly can also get off track or completely detach from the window. If you find that the window doesn’t close evenly or hear banging noises inside your door, that assembly may need a closer look.

How important is this service?

A properly operating window motor and regulator allow you, your passengers, and your car's interior to remain dry and safe. Sometimes a window regulator will stop working entirely without the window being fully closed. So of course, getting this service done sooner is better than waiting for an outright failure to occur..

The interiors and power features of your vehicle can also get damaged due to one heavy rainfall that can happen when you least suspect it. So if you’re having issues now, keep you and your car dry by having the issues looked at.

How many times have you heard the words “I’m sorry, this is a dealer job only”? The New VW Beetle Convertible’s power window system is complicated and Volkswagen isn’t making these repairs easy or affordable.

Much to the surprise of many repair facilities and Volkswagen New Beetle Convertible owners, VW stopped making the New Beetle Convertible OEM replacement power window regulators in Their current solution is a repair kit. A repair kit that not only is designed to break (it’s the same plastic), it isn’t easy to use either. The other problem with the Beetle Convertible is that the entire rear seat must be removed to get to the rear quarter panel regulator, as well as sensors that pertain to the Beetle convertible top. Most non-dealer mechanics won’t even attempt this repair and those that do will spend the next 3 days working on it. At Power Window Repair, we’re committed to making “dealer only” power window repairs a thing of the past and we can complete a power window repair on the Beetle Convertible in under 2 hours. At more than 40% off dealer rates, you’re going to want to keep reading.

What Happens

As with most European vehicles, the power window regulator in the New Beetle Convertible usually gives notice when it’s about to break. It’s common to hear squeaking and squawking just prior to either getting hung up or dropping into the door panel like a rock. We like to call that “talking to you” and it’s usually a good idea not to touch the power window switch again once you start hearing weird noises. NOTE: If your anti-pinch fails (when the window drops 1/2 inch to clear top when door is opened), it is not the power window system that is failing. The sensor that controls the anti-pinch safety feature is contained in the door lock actuator which Power Window Repair can also replace for you.

In most cases, it’s a pulley wheel or anchor that breaks on the window regulator that’s to blame. Once the regulator has failed in any capacity, every time the power window button is touched the regulator cable is thrown about in the door and often wraps itself around spool wheel. We see this often as most VW owners know that they’re about to be asked for their first born child as payment for this repair at the dealer and will often hit the button several times in hopes that it will finally come up. We call this “living in the world of hope”. We wouldn’t care except that some parts can be broken beyond repair and burning out power window motors and switches will just add to your repair costs. Our motto is just DON’T do it!

What We Do

At Power Window Repair, we repair the OEM Volkswagen New Beetle Convertible power window regulators. We believe so strongly in our proprietary method of repair that we back it with a 1 year warranty on parts and labor. Our stainless steel repairs and custom fabricated metal parts actually reverse what were designed to be weak points in the Beetle Convertible power window regulator, so not only do we repair what broke to begin with, we take that extra step to strengthen all weak areas to give you a reliable and long lasting repair.

There are good reasons behind what we do and how we do it!

Power Window Repair entire existence surrounds providing our customers with a repair they can count on. If we are going to stake our good reputation on a repair, you can bet we’ll need to do it our way! The reasons are simple. Our repair is stronger and superior to even the original OEM design, aftermarket parts are made with the cheapest of materials and are inferior, and most importantly any repair done in a junkyard or slapped together is never going to be worth your time and money!

Aftermarket Parts

Eventually, we expect an aftermarket part to be available for this vehicle, but you won’t catch us using it! We’ve heard it all. From customers saying they just replaced it months ago themselves, to they’ve paid someone to do it 9 months ago and now they’re being asked for more labor to install the part under warranty and worse yet, half the customers we talk to and service have had their power window regulators replaced 2 or 3 times before finding Power Window Repair. This just reinforces what we already know. While the price looks right, those aftermarket parts are going to be inferior to the OEM part, which was designed to break to begin with. Side by side, there’s really no comparison. These power window regulators often break under warranty, causing you to pay more in labor at your mechanics or in your time and labor shipping parts back and forth, uninstalling and reinstalling. That process can quickly turn into a shade-tree mechanics nightmare, so even if we start to see these parts available, we would never suggest installing them in the door of your New Beetle Convertible.

Inexperienced Mechanics

While we understand that money is often a factor in the decision making process, PLEASE DON’T TAKE YOUR NICE CAR TO A MEAN OLD JUNKYARD OR LET SOMEONE WHO IS INEXPERIENCED WORK ON IT!! It’s immediately evident to us when someone inexperienced has been in the door of a vehicle before us. You can’t fool our technicians. These repairs are often crude and in turn have damaged some of the internal workings of the door, for example the power window switch connectors, interior door handle linkage, the door lock system, speakers and wire harness. The repair may have looked enticing and may have even appeared to work for a short time, but it’s going to cause one whopper of a headache later.

Research on Window Motor for Volkswagen Beetle

The window regulator controls the mechanical operation of car windows. In cars with power windows, the window regulator is equipped with a window motor, which controls the electrical functioning of the power windows. In some cars, the window regulator and the window motor are fused into a single unit. In a Volkswagen Beetle, the power windows are operated by a window motor, which is wired to a switch. When the switch is pressed, the power window panes move up or down. The window motor may become non-functional if it becomes clogged or burns out. In some cases, a car window motor repair service can restore the normal operation of the window motor. In some other cases like a burnt window motor, your only choice is to get the window motor replaced as soon as possible.

Common Problems Related to Volkswagen Beetle Window Motor

When the power windows in your Volkswagen Beetle fail to operate, the reason is the car window motor. To be on the safe side, you should check out the other probable causes of non-functional power windows before deciding to replace the window motor. When a power window stops operating, the first point to check is the power source like a fuse or a wiring. If a blown fuse is the problem or the wires are not properly hooked, fix those problems and recheck the power window operation. If the electrical wiring, the fuse, and the regulator check out OK, then by process of elimination, you can conclude that the window motor is the problem. When your car's window motor fails, first check with a technician whether a car power window motor repair service can fix the problem. If not, then prepare to get the window motor replaced. For a high-performance car like Volkswagen Beetle, you must ensure that you buy an exact matching replacement part for continued performance.

How To Replace Power Window Motor VW Volkswagen Beetle

Brought to you by 1AAuto.com, your source for quality replacement parts and the best service on the Internet.

Hi, I'm Don from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and the next time you need a part for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace a power window motor on this Volkswagen Beetle. We'll show you on the driver side, but the passenger side is the same procedure. The items you'll need for this is a flat blade screwdriver, a T20 and T30 Torx driver, and a Phillips screwdriver.

Start off by prying off this panel on your pull handle. Behind that there are two Phillips screws. Just go ahead and remove both of those. At the bottom of the door panel there are three T20 Torx bolts. Go ahead and remove those three. Now you want to just pull out on the panel, just around the edges. Any screws that you loosened up all the way, but wouldn't pull out entirely, they will fall out now, so just keep an eye on where they go. When all the clips are free except the top of the door panel, you just want to reach up here, pull it out of the track, and pull it forward. On the back of your door panel you'll see a bunch of harnesses, just push the tab and pull the harnesses free. Then for your door handle cable, just pull it out of the bracket and then unhook it. Just disconnect this harness for your door lock. For these two larger harnesses down here, you just want to pry them free with a flat blade screwdriver. Then just push the tab on this harness and disconnect your courtesy light.

Next just pry up on the top of this harness. Then just pry the harness off. Then remove these three T30 Torx screws. Now the motor will pull free.

Take your new motor and push it into place. Replace those three T30 Torx screws. Reconnect the harness and push the clip back down.

To reinstall your door panel, just reconnect each of those harnesses. Then re-clip your door handle cable and just push it back into that bracket. Make sure you reconnect your courtesy light. Now put the door panel back into the track and then just push it down. Then just hit in the clips around the edge of the door panel. Then replace those three T20 screws and the two Phillips screws in the pull handle. Just replace that panel and fit it into place and you're all set.

We hope this video helps you out. Brought to you by www.1AAuto.com, your source for quality replacement parts and the best service on the Internet. Please feel free to call us toll-free, We're the company that's here for you on the Internet and in person.
