What does the ABS light on Chevrolet Tahoe mean?

We will begin our article with the meaning of an ABS warning light on Chevrolet Tahoe, to do this, in first, we will see what an ABS is, and next, why the ABS light on your car lights up.

What is the ABS on Chevrolet Tahoe?

First of all, it is vital to demonstrate to you what the ABS of your Chevrolet Tahoe is utilized for so that you can understand the rest of this content. The ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) is a device that prevents the wheels of your car from locking during braking. The aim of this system is to optimise the braking distance of a car by preventing the wheels from locking, sliding on the road and you losing control of your car. The ABS system of your Chevrolet Tahoe is composed of several parts, here they are:

  • Speed sensors on each wheel, which will evaluate if one of the wheels locks up.
  • A hydraulic system and valves that will control the pressure of the pads on the discs to control the braking power of the car
  • A computer that is the control center of your entire ABS system as well as the ABS light of your Chevrolet Tahoe

.
In truth, you can with ease feel how your car’s ABS works. If you have to steer, you will find that your car will brake by pawing, this is precisely the behaviour that ABS permits, it will optimise braking to the maximum by relating the phases of pressure on the brake discs and the phases of discharge to prevent the wheels from locking up.

Meaning of an ABS light on Chevrolet Tahoe

Now we go forward to the part that you are almost certainly more enthusiastic about, meaning of an ABS warning light on a Chevrolet Tahoe? Firstly, it is an orange light, so if it is on it shows that your ABS system is faulty. You should be informed that whenever the ABS warning light is on, the ABS will be put into security mode, so you should adjust your driving and not take any risks. Here are the different problems that the ABS warning light on your Chevrolet Tahoe can point:

  • It could be a simple short circuit, a damaged wiring harness, a faulty relay or fuse. Use a pressure gauge to examine it.
  • A malfunctioning ABS sensor: A malfunction of one of them motives the ABS light on your Chevrolet Tahoe to turn on
  • The ABS hydraulic block of your Chevrolet Tahoe: If it is faulty it is possible that the indicator light will come on and you will no longer be able to use your ABS.
  • The ABS computer: If the computer has a trouble, being the center of all decisions made to run your ABS, the light will obviously turn on.

What if the ABS light comes on on my Chevrolet Tahoe?

We will now go forward to the part where we will try to give you some answers to switch off this light, and thus answer the following question, what to do if the ABS light is on on my Chevrolet Tahoe?. The answers will might depend on the deficiencies you are going through. Firstly, pass your Chevrolet Tahoe to the diagnostic tool, if you don’t know how to read a fault code on Chevrolet Tahoe, don’t think twice to go through our content which points the steps to take. Once you have located the cause of your issue, here are the steps to take to resolve it and turn off the ABS light on your Chevrolet Tahoe:

  • Issue of the ECU or the hydraulic block: It can only be adjusted, and in this case, you will have to go through a professional, but if it’s dead, it could cost you around € to change the ECU and to € if you have to change both of them.
  • Electrical issue: Once you’ve identified an electrical issue with your manometer, if it’s only a fuse or a relay, count around 10€ maximum, otherwise you’ll have to repair the wiring harness.
  • A faulty sensor: Sometimes a simple cleaning of the sensors will be enough to remedy the issue, otherwise changing a sensor can cost up to a few hundred euros.

My Tahoe 2WD is showing both the BRAKE and ABS light on but only every so often. Any ideas what this could be? If I turn off the ignition and restart, it goes off.

I just took my Tahoe into the brake shop yesterday because of the same thing. They hooked it up to the computer and determined the problem was a short in the ABS sensor. They called the dealership and they had three in stock since they said this is a common problem. $ for the sensor plus labor to install. The brake shop said this was the third Tahoe in two months with the same exact problem. They said I would have no problem braking until I can get it fixed but that when the light is on the antilock brakes are not working.

I think another recall might be in order.

I just repaired this problem on my Yukon,
The problem is very common and will occur eventually
on all Chevy GMC vehicles with kelsey hayes EBCM
module. (ABS module) In order to get the ABS pump motor
to turn off simply pull the 60Amp fuse.

you can spend $ to $ dollars at the dealer to
have it replaced but the BEST option is to have YOUR unit
upgraded and repaired. You can remove the unit from your
vechicle without it impacting your brakesyou simply won't
have the ABS functionality until the unit is reinstalled in
your vehicle.

there are a couple of shops that can perform this procedure, I
used the one located in Idaho.

the removal of the unit is pretty straightforward for those that
work on their vehicles occassionally.

Check out www.modulemaster.com. If you going to attempt to remove the ABS module yourself, you can send it to this company for repair and upgrade for $ If I knew what I know now, it would save me several hundred dollars. I would of removed it and sent it out for repair. A possible recall may be coming, wonder it the dealership will refund what it cost me $ and that was giving me a reduce cost. And the funny thing is that they don't replace the entire unit, just the small electrical pump motor on the unit. Good luck..

Not having ABS isnt a big thing if you drove older cars, its just like that, dont hit the breaks and expect them to not skid until you get it repaired of course.

Thanks for the heads up. This is my second time with the ABS module motor running continuously, even when you turn off the engine. The first time I was able to talk the dealership down from roughly $1, to repair it to about $ This time, about 2 years later, I went to ebay and found an auction for a rebuild service in West Palm Beach, FL. Total cost was $ It wasn't a big deal to get it off, ship it to Auto and Truck Electronics and then put it back on when I received it back. I just put it back on a little while ago and it seems to be working great. All the lights are now off and the ABS motor is not running anymore. Plus, the rebuild came with a 3 year warranty. This forum saved me some $$$$$. Thanks, Marty

Suburban LT - abs & break light intermittently comes on. Replaced all 4 shock absorbers. Problem disappeared. Hope this helps someone from spending over to turn the lights out. The chevy dealer wanted dollars. Why can't they diagnose problems like this?

djmann02

, AM

Well, I have an ABS story to tell that has recently occurred. Back in January, I had to replace the parking brake shoes due to a previous owner driving around with her parking brake on. While everything was stripped down, I decided to go ahead and replace the rear brake pads since I have around k miles on them. Several months ago my ABS and BRAKE light started coming on intermittently and I would lose ABS function. Additionally, last week, I started hearing one of my squealers on the rear brakes making it's noise so a couple of days ago I decided to pull the rear tires off. The driver's side was fine showing normal wear but the passenger side was completely worn down. Apparently, the caliper somehow got stuck. I went to Advance Auto and talked with the guys about my caliper issue and they suggested flushing the brake lines before replacing the caliper.

To make a longer story somewhat shorter, I bled the caliper that was sticking and a lot of gunk and thick fluid came out. I repeated the process on the driver's side rear with less thickness but not clear. I bled the front which seemed to be fine. New pads are on the back but here is the thingNO MORE ABS light. Did I stumble across something?

Just thought I would throw that story out there for someone to think about.

your braking issues are very well known with these vehicles of this period..

the rear calipers over time will have the pistions get bell shaped ..these must be replaced.

the parking brake shoes drag all the time as they move around and wear out even if you never ever use them [LIMITED GM recall on standard shift vehicles ONLY ]the ABS light coming on is in most cases the Abs MODULE pump relay contacts

the other problem is leaking brake lines from rusting out make sure you check the line along the fuel tank..this is big failure ratealso the lines behind the driver side front wheel tire on the frame rail..

THESE ITEMS I HAVE HAD TO DEAL WITH ..

The rear calipers need be removed and then with your hands push the pistons in and out then you will see what I'm saying..I measured them and confirmed this bell shaping deformationcould be the ABS pulse pressues cause thistherefore do not buy any used/rebuilt calipers

I got advance auto front and rear rotors ,rear calipers, brake shoes lifetime warrantee

I got the park brake shoe kit from auto zone with the new style hold down clips lifetime warrantee..

bought 25 ft of brake line with the double flare tool and a hand full of fittings

brakes work great now better than , when I bought this new..

the front calipers pistions are very hard steel they do not have this distortion issue

djmann02

, PM

WOW! That was a lot to take in at one time. But I appreciate the info none the less. I will continue to monitor the rear calipers. So far, no ABS light since the new rear pads and flushing of the brake fluid. Keeping my fingers crossed.

flushing the brake fluid may have reduced the ABS pump starting current, brake fluid over time absorbs mositurealso most repair shops or owners push back caliper pistons with out opening the bleed screws first. with this condition it pushes the damaged/dirty/contaminated fluid into the braking system

on high end vehicles the brake fluid has a replacement flushing lifeGM does not this may explain why these vehicles have these issueswith ABS the brake fluid should have a OEM LIFE standard set..this will ensure that the vehicle will stop when comanded..

If you live where the weather conditions are not cold snowy and roads covered with de icing chemicals some of these issues with the brakes will take longer to develop..most of these in the rust belt are lucky to get 5 yrs of no failures some have replace the brakes lines twice on a vehicle like yours..

Mine has had the lights on the dash, off and on for the last 5 years so one time a few years ago I thought I would take the module off and send it to the company for a rebuild after over an hour of trying to get a torx bit up between the module and the underside of the Tahoe, I gave up. :runaround: How the heck did you guys remove it? there is less than a half inch to work with on top and the ones on the back side are even worse. What tool can do this job?

I have worked on my own cars for over 30 years so figuring this stuff out has never been an issue until now.

thx

Nasca

, AM

Ramsair, I used a 1/4 inch ratchet with hex socket. Had to feel around for bolts on back side. Surprisingly came out very easy. I used module Masters, turn around time was fairly fast. I reinstalled two weeks ago so far no light. you can also find instructions on mudule masters website. hope this helps. ( Tahoe 4wd)

Ramsair

, PM

Pretty sure that is what I was using too it actually kind of started to strip the first one ~ mine must be on tighter. For now I think I will just leave it alone, if it were to stay on all the time I will give it another go. What is super strange is it comes on more in the Phoenix heat (summers) - when winter hits or I am in the cooler areas like Pinetop or Flagstaff, it rarely comes on.

This definately should have be a recall item. Thanks GM :jerking:

djmann02

Do the Tahoes from this era generally have the Kelsey Hayes module? That seems to be the only module that module master will repair

jthomp

, PM

Yes, it's a Kelsy Hayes. Sounds like it may be going bad, more often there is no warning. You turn the motor off and the ABS motor continues to run. That when you have to pull the ABS 60 amp fuse under the hood on driver side behind the windshield washer reservoir. There may be other re-builders. I have used BBA-reman.com. Great company, Takes about two days for them to repair it, mailing is the longest there and back. You may consider two day shipping. It's a pain removing the top portion off the ABS motor, tight space. Life-time guarantee I think. Talk to the company, they will walk you through it. You can drive the vehicle without the ABS module while out for repair. Just have to wrap a plastic bag over the unit and duct tape.I used them twice with great results.Good luck

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, is there a way to diagnose this issue? I have heard in some areas that this can be caused by faulty hubs (an expensive and lengthy repair), the module, and now, after reading this thread, brake pads, fluid, or which way a butterfly flaps its wings

I imagine the answer to my question is no due to the myriad of solutions that seem to be appearing. Didn't think about a fluid flush/brake bleed at all, though it is certainly a good maintanence item I have been ignoring anyway

I have a silverado and this has basically become an issue on every drive. I just hate the lights there, so would like to fix the issue. I jacked up the truck and did the shake test on the wheels, hubs still felt tight and good, don't think I want to replace them if I don't have to

Thank you!

Murph: The ABS lite comes on for a reason. You need to get it on an ABS capable scan tool and post back the code numbers. Most independent jobbers will charge you $ for this service.

j cAT

, PM

If you read thru the posts on these forums that I have explained on this issue tests can be done to determine what the failure is.

since you have an ABS light always on , and the brakes work properly since you did not mention any braking issues, I also recommend a scan for the ABS codes with the ABS capabile scanner.

with that info then you can get answers as to what the problem is..the hubs are not too expensive. what is expensive would be the electronic brake control unit. though this can be repaired thru the internet. most times the relay is burned out on these units.

you could remove and clean the ground point of the ABS contol unit on the frame rail under the driver seat which is next to the abs controller. a bad corroded ground could cause this ..

when you start the vehicle lots of tests are commanded by the computer. if there is any malfunction the failure lights light up !

Murphster05

, AM

Hi guys,

Thanks a ton for the direction! Do you have to be at the code reader when the lights are on or do they store the codes in the computer and they can be recovered?

I am thinking that a brake bleed is in order anyway to get some fresh fluid and make sure the calipers aren't filled with gunk

I will check the ground underneath the frame as that is incredibly simple to take a look at.

Thank you!

stickman

, PM

Who ever reads the codes needs to look at "active or current" DTC's if the light is on.

That said, they also need to look at "history" DTC's regardless if the ABS lite is on or off. Yes, the codes are stored in the VCM for a certain length of time.

Remember that code numbers are essential to us being able to help with this issue. (P####, C####, etc)

I recently had the same issue with my ABS i went to start my truck and noticed something running and my ABS and brake light lite up on dash. I pulled my 60 amp fuse the noise stopped the issue im having now is I have running brake lights but i need to mash the brake pedal to the floor as hard as I can for my brake lights to actually signal and when they do they sort of flicker. Any ideas here? Not really looking to spend on a vehicle with k

jthomp

First off, sounds like you need to have the ABS module rebuilt. I have used this company twice with my Tahoe, bba-reman.com, good company, use to be lifetime warranty on rebuilt. Your ABS module is located underneath on drivers side. Just need to disconnect wiring harness and unscrew the four screws. Box it and ship it to them. Go on their website and it will instruct you how. Some difficulty getting the screws out, mostly feeling by hand but can be done. I used a large plastic food bag and duct tape to cover the body and electrical harness from dirt and water. Braking should not be a problem, maybe a little harder. As far as your braking lights, I am not sure that brake lights are affected by the ABS module. That may be a problem with the brake light switch above your brake petal. I never had a issue with my brake lights when my ABS module went bad.

the ABS pump motor running means that the pump relay is bad this will require the removal of this which is on top of the ABS valve brake fluid filled body. these can be purchased new for a few hundred at the auto stores. removal can be hard because GM used defective screws you will need to replace these since they are pretty rusted out to remove you must lift up only then take it out because there is solenoids that stick up ..

removal of the brake lines will be a nasty tough job MARK !!!! lines first if you try that ..

just replace the brake pedal switch so your brake lights work normally K is about when this is worn out.

ABS Light On - Chevy/GMC Trucks

Your Chevy Tahoe&#;s ABS Light comes on when it fails a self diagnostic cycle.  When on, it indicates that the Tahoe does not have Anti-Lock brakes, and the safety they provide.

Your Tahoe&#;s ABS system uses a system of sensors to determine wheel speed when braking.  If one of the wheels is starting to lock up, it&#;ll apply the maximum amount of brake to that wheel in order to keep it from sliding.

Wheels that are turning will slow a vehicle faster than a locked wheel.  Skidding tires also create flat spots in the tire, which can be inconvenient and dangerous in itself.  ABS also allows you to be able to steer the vehicle while slowing down, and has been around for so long that many drivers have never driven a vehicle without it.

Is it Safe to Drive Your Tahoe?

The ABS light is different than the brake warning light itself.  The brake light indicates that there is a problem with the physical braking system and that your Tahoe is unsafe to drive.

Yes, you can drive your Tahoe with the ABS light on.  Is it safe?  It&#;s not as safe, especially when it&#;s raining, snowing, or the road surface is loose/uneven.  That&#;s why we recommend having the ABS system fixed as soon as possible.

Chevy Tahoe ABS Light On Causes

A good code scanner will often tell you which part of the ABS system has gone bad.  Not every OBDII scanner will give up this information.  A good one will.  Most auto parts stores will have a free scanning service that they would be happy to let you utilize.

Here are the three most common causes of the ABS light coming on:

1.  Wheel Speed Sensor

The wheel speed sensors are responsible for monitoring the wheel speed and sending it back to the computer system.  If one of the wheels is moving slower than the others it on its way to locking up.  The ABS then takes activates on that wheel in order to keep it from locking.

When this sensor is no longer sending a signal to your Tahoe&#;s ABS system, it is no longer functioning properly and the ABS light will be activated on the dashboard.

2.  ABS Module

The antilock brake system runs through the ABS module.  This module physically controls the anti-lock brake system  If it becomes damaged, and can no longer control all four brakes, the ABS light will activate.  Typically, corrosion is the most common reason why the module fails.

3.  ABS Fluid Level

If the fluid level is too low to keep pressure in the ABS lines, the ABS light will come on.  Without the pressure the ABS will no longer be able to physically activate.

Conclusion

It is not advisable to ignore your Chevy Tahoe&#;s ABS light.  Most of the time, the wheel speed sensors are going to be what triggers it.  If there is anything you would like to add, please leave a comment below.  Good luck!

Light chevy tahoe on abs

The ABS light is a warning light that indicates that the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) has detected a problem. The ABS system, which monitors and controls braking to avoid wheel locking up during hard braking, can get tripped by a variety of things. In this article, I will go over how to fix the issue if it’s caused by low brake fluid levels.

How To Reset ABS Light On A Chevy Tahoe

[Step 1]

Confirm that fluid level is low by checking the reservoir. If it’s not, you’ll need to continue looking for what might have tripped the ABS system. Fill up the reservoir with a DOT-approved brake fluid. You can find this at any auto parts store or automotive specialty shop and in most cases they will be able to help you out if you ask nicely enough (or just buy their overpriced stuff). Be careful when filling your car up as spilling fluids like brake fluids are bad news and could potentially ruin some of your more expensive items in your vehicle!

[Step 2]

There’s two things which I want to touch on here before moving onto Step Three; one is how important it is to know the make and model of your vehicle before you start any work on it. I’ve been guilty in the past of not paying close attention when filling a car up with fluid but that was only because I had no idea what kind it needed! All those years ago, if this article existed then hopefully people would have noticed my screw-up earlier than they did

[Step 3]

Continue bleeding air out by pressing down firmly on the brake pedal until all fluid is pushed back into reservoir. Replace cap securely once finished, go for a drive around town or over some bumpy roads (if possible) to see if ABS light goes off. If it doesn’t come off after ten minutes or so, read Step Four below.

[Step 4]

If the ABS light remains on, you may have a faulty sensor. This could be caused by anything from contaminated fluid to dirty sensors but in any case it will require some work to fix and you should take your car into an auto mechanic for help with this one!

Tips

  1. If the ABS light remains on, you may have a faulty sensor. This could be caused by anything from contaminated fluid to dirty sensors but in any case it will require some work to fix and you should take your car into an auto mechanic for help with this one!
  2. Be careful when filling up your vehicle as spilling brake fluids is bad news and can ruin more expensive items like battery acid or windshield wiper blades!
  3. Always make sure that you know what kind of fluid is required before starting any work on your vehicle – whether small jobs or full engine rebuilds, if they’re not using the right stuff then things are going to get messy soon enough…or worse than that – damaged parts! Make sure all tools used are also the right kind of tools for your vehicle as well.
  4. Always keep an eye on how much brake fluid is left in your reservoir when driving, too! You should be able to see it from a glance but if you’re not sure then grab yourself some paper and pen (or tablet) and jot down each time you add more fluids so that you know until the next time.
  5. Keep up with regular maintenance by getting your oil changed regularly or having someone inspect all rubber hoses every few months – this will help avoid costly repairs in future! These are easy fixes which can save lots of money at a later date.

FAQ’s

What are the symptoms of ABS light?

ABS lights on your dashboard is an indication that there is a problem with one or more of the sensors (which monitor wheel speed, steering angle and vehicle yaw). This sensor could be faulty, dirty or have contaminated fluid. When this happens you should take it to get checked out by a professional mechanic as soon as possible!

Why does my car’s ABS light come on?

If you’re noticing unusual braking behaviour, such as feeling like your car isn’t stopping smoothly, then its time to check for errors in the system which maintain pressure in brakes. If these systems aren’t working properly it can lead to brake failure and potentially dangerous consequences! It may also indicate that the sensors are faulty or have dirty fluid.

What is the best way to fix ABS lights?

If your ABS light stays on, then you may be experiencing a more serious problem! If this happens, take it in for some repairs as soon as possible so that they can get everything fixed up and running smoothly again. There are many different things which could cause problems with your brakes including contamination of brake fluids or having old parts inside the system – either one could lead to expensive repairs down the line if not taken care of quickly. That’s why it pays off to invest in regular maintenance such as oil changes so that any minor issues will also be discovered before they become major ones. Regular upkeep means less headaches later on!

Conclusion

Now you know how to identify the ABS lights on yofur Chevy Tahoe! Make sure that you keep up with regular maintenance like oil changes and inspections. This will help avoid costly repairs in future when any small issues are found before they become major ones. If your car’s ABS light stays on, then it may be time for some more serious checks as this could indicate other problems such as faulty sensors or contaminated brake fluids. Whatever happens, take it into a mechanic ASAP!

Chevrolet ABS Light Stays On

What does it mean when the Chevy ABS light stays on?

chevrolet abs light on

When your Chevrolet ABS light stays on while driving, it could mean that the anti-lock brake system (ABS) is malfunctioning. A fault code gets stored in the ABS module.

Your vehicle may require a longer distance to stop.

If your vehicle is equipped with traction control, that system will be disabled since it depends on the ABS to function.

One of the most common problems that trigger Chevy ABS light is a bad ABS wheel speed sensor at one of the wheels.

Symptoms

Common symptoms that you notice when there is a problem with the ABS on a Chevrolet.

  • ABS light stays on
  • Brake light on
  • The vehicle requires a longer distance to stop.
  • Service traction control message.
  • Traction and stability get disabled.

If your Chevrolet ABS light stays on, it may take longer to bring the car to a complete stop, especially on slippery roads.

With no ABS, Chevrolet wheels can potentially lock up during braking.

Why is my Chevy ABS light on?

check chevrolet brake fluid level if abs light is on

The most common problems that trigger the ABS light on a Chevy vehicle are:

  1. Bad ABS wheel speed sensor,
  2. Defective steering angle sensor,
  3. Damaged wire harness
  4. Faulty brake light switch
  5. Defective ABS module or pump
  6. Poor ground connection
  7. Low brake fluid level

Any of these problems can trigger the Chevrolet ABS light to stay on. To further troubleshoot this problem, use a diagnostic scanner to read the ABS module's fault codes.

How to Diagnose and Reset Chevy ABS Light

When a Chevy ABS light stays ON, a fault code will be stored in your Chevrolet ABS module. To find out why your Chevrolet ABS light is on, read the ABS module's fault codes.

To diagnose Chevrolet ABS light(s), you will need an ABS OBD-II scanner for Chevy.

  1. Park your Chevrolet in a safe area where you can work.Chevrolet parked to diagnose ABS light
  2. Locate the Chevrolet OBD-2 port under the dashboard. Plug the OBD-2 scanner into the OBD2 port of your ChevroletRead Chevrolet ABS BRAKE light codes
  3. Turn on the ignition. All Chevrolet dashboard lights should turn on but do not start the engine. If your Chevrolet has START/STOP button, press it twice without pressing on the brake pedal. Turn on Chevrolet to read erase ABS light
  4. Allow your Chevrolet OBD-2 scanner to connect to the Engine Control Unit (ECU). This may take a few seconds. ABS light troulbeshooting Chevrolet Spark, Sonic, Bolt, Volt, Cruze, Malibu, Impala, Camaro, Corvette, City Express, Trax, Equinox, Traverse, Tahoe, Suburban, Colorado, Silverado, Sonic, Blazer, Astro, HHR, Uplander, Avalanche etc.

  5. Select Chevrolet from the menu. Manually select the Anti-lock Brake System menu. Chevrolet > Model > ABS module. Select Chevrolet

  6. Read codes from the ABS module.

This is a procedure that can be performed by your Chevrolet dealer, the local auto mechanic. You can also read Chevrolet ABS codes yourself if you have the right OBD-II scanner.

Clear Chevrolet ABS Codes

Chevrolet ABS Problem

  1. Once you fix your Chevrolet ABS problem, you can come back and clear the ABS Fault Codes.
  2. If your scanner cannot communicate with the ABS module, it is possible that the ABS module is defective and it needs to either be replaced, which can be an expensive repair, or use a third party that can rebuild your ABS unit.

Keep in mind that you can't reset the ABS light on your Chevrolet until you fix the problem that triggered the ABS light.

Rember to check the brake fluid level. If the level is below the MIN mark, add ONLY the brake fluid type noted on the brake fluid cap. Typically it will be DOT 4 Brake Fluid but check the cap in your Chevrolet to verify.

Use these steps to read ABS codes from Chevy vehicles such as Spark, Sonic, Bolt, Volt, Cruze, Malibu, Impala, Camaro, Corvette, City Express, Trax, Equinox, Traverse, Tahoe, Suburban, Colorado, Silverado, Sonic, Blazer, Astro, HHR, Uplander, Avalanche, etc.

Chevy ABS light on but no codes?

If you use a basic scanner that can not access the ABS module, you will retrieve no fault codes even though the ABS light is on. That's because the fault codes are stored in the ABS module, and therefore, you need an OBD-II ABS scanner. Your scanner is most likely only reading codes from the ENGINE module and not the ABS module.

If you have the right scanner but get an error when trying to communicate with the ABS module, in most cases, the module itself is bad, or there is a bad fuse.

Gretta’s question My Tahoe keeps setting the ABS warning light. It&#;s been snowing a lot, and I want the brakes to be working right. What could be causing this?

Chevy Tahoe ABS ligth repair

Chevy Tahoe

Answer: Yes, the ABS braking system is a fail safe system, so that if the ABS portion breaks down it just reverts to normal brakes. BUT, you won&#;t have anti lock capability when that light comes on. Now they are rather complex computer driven systems, but since you mention you&#;re in a snow area, that can often be the cause of ABS malfunctions in that Tahoe. The salt and slush can cause corrosion in the ABS wheel sensors. GM even put out a bulletin about this a few years back. So have the wheel sensors removed, the assembly cleaned of debris, and see if that fixes your problem. You may need further work, like replacing bad sensors or broken wiring, BUT start with the simple process of just cleaning the sensors and their mountings off. Because that often fixes ABS problems in those Tahoes.
