For my former '99, I bought a 1 1/4 inch piano hinge ($4. Home depot) . Cut it to length (app 8 inch long), file the edge on the ends to fit like a glove. Used 8 or 10 very small machine screws with nuts to bolt both sides of the hinge to the console and top cover. I had removed the console out of the car , and disassembled the 2 parts of the top cover, to hold on the nuts while turning the small screws. I might have drilled new smaller holes in the hinge, instead of using the actual ones ( the piano hinge comes pre-drilled) I don't quite remember that detail. Used semi gloss black spray paint on the hinge. Voilà! A piano hinge, better than the original plastic edge.

Watching home reno shows like Christina on the Coastor the Property Brothers: Forever Home is a great way to gather ideas to test out in your own crib. But sometimes home design experts unveil a piece so intricate, your immediate reaction is along the lines of "wow that's beautiful, but also where would a simple woman like I even find that?"

That's how we USED to feel about these decorative shower doors that we keep seeing on HGTV. Most stores only offer sliding or swinging shower doors, clear glass or frosted glass doors—but never ones that so fancily that resemble a window pane. Where are designers finding such ornate shower doors? Luckily, they're finally at a store near us: Home Depot. Best part is, the prices start pretty low.

You can snag two of these black matte paned doors at The Home Depot for under $200—$135 for sliding bathtub doors, and $175 for sliding shower doors. The doors are actually very new for the retailer, and haven't accumulated any ratings or reviews yet (maybe you can be the first!). It's worth noting that these doors do not come with handles, so you will have to add your own (the handles that The Home Depot suggests you buy are over $300, but we found some for $61). Also, if you're looking for a swinging door, those exist too, but will put you out a bit more.

Maximum Load Weights for Various Types of Piano Hinges

Piano hinges are also known as continuous hinges. They are among the most common types of hinges found in various types of installation projects. Below are maximum load weights recommended for the different types of piano hinges. It is always important to understand the strength of the various hinges you may use for a do-it-yourself piano project.

If a hinge is too week, it can spell disaster for your piano project. On the other hand, you do not want to spend too much money on an excessively strong hinge. This article provides a brief explanation on the 3 most common types of hinges. Continue reading this article for more information on types of piano hinges and their maximum strength.

Load Strength

Piano hinges are very common. The load strength of the piano hinge is determined by a couple different things. They are first determined by the number of knuckles in the hinge and second, it is determined by the number of fasteners. The load is actually spread right across the length of the piano hinge. A few examples are to follow.

Standard 24-Inch Hinge

This hinge will give you about 60 pounds of maximum weight. So, the spread of weight on this hinge is 2.5 pounds per 1-inch of the hinge.

Plastic Piano Hinge

A 2-inch plastic piano hinge can typically handle up to 100 pounds of load per linear inch of the hinge. The plastic piano hinge is an economical alternative to a piano hinge constructed of steel or other metal material.

Plated Finished Hinge

Some smaller hinges that are anywhere from 1-inch to 1.5-inches in width are great for lighter load projects. These types of piano hinges usually only have 5 knuckles. They offer great load bearing from end to end are good for light weight applications such as for kitchen cabinets and pantries.
