2002 jeep liberty speaker replacement

2002 jeep liberty speaker replacement DEFAULT

The Jeep Liberty was the answer to other SUVs on the market, such as the Honda CR-v and Toyota RAV4. It even featured a custom Infinity sound system.

Because the last model was built in , you may need to upgrade its audio system. But how do you replace dash speakers in your Liberty? Let’s find out.

In general, to replace dash speakers in Jeep Liberty you have to remove both A-pillar panels. Then using a plastic panel tool, lift and unclip the panel covering the dash speakers. With full access to the dash tweeters, the last step is to unscrew them from the dash using a flat head screwdriver.

As an Amazon Associate ImproveCarAudio earns from qualifying purchases made through the links in this article.

Tip: Although this may look straightforward, Jeep Liberty is the unique car that requires removing A-pillars to get access to the dash speakers.

If you decide to make a direct factory replacement, the best option is to purchase Kicker 46CSS which you can place in your Liberty in standard locations without installing additional adaptor rings, or drilling extra holes.

There are few more tricks that I will explain in the article below, including several different audio options that you can use in your Jeep Liberty.

Jeep Liberty overview

The Jeep Liberty is a small and compact SUV (sport utility vehicle) that was produced in the United States between the years of and

Liberty was introduced as a replacement to the Jeep Cherokee XJ, and it had a moderate price tag sitting between the Jeep Wrangler and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

After the Jeep Liberty KJ was discontinued because it could not meet the emission standards for diesel engines, the new and improved Jeep Liberty KK took its place.

This rugged little SUV was meant to tackle and respond to the other SUV’s on the market, such as the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4.

What type of factory stereo shipped with the Jeep Liberty

The factory car audio options of the Liberty were limited. You were only able to have a stereo unit consisting of a cassette or CD player that powered four inch speakers and then two dashboard tweeters, or you could opt for the infinity system.

The infinity system was comprised of a CD player and a cassette player, as well as amplifiers on each side of the vehicle powering both the door and dash speakers.

This system offered much better sound quality because the speakers were not OEM factory standard speakers, but six Infinity Premium Speakers. The most significant boost to the quality and dynamic gave not the speakers but individual amps running separate speakers. These amps gave the speakers more room to breathe and perform well.

If you want to find out more about why amplifiers are always a sound choice for improving your car audio system’s sound quality, then check this article.

I explain the benefits of having an amplifier and how it improves your sound quality even when used in conjunction with old car speakers.

Should I replace the speakers in Jeep Liberty?

If you opted for the infinity system, there would probably be no need to replace your speakers unless they are blown.

However, if your sound system is the base stereo system with serial speakers, there is actually no other option than to replace the speakers with aftermarket models. Especially if you consider yourself an audiophile, I suggest finding an aftermarket alternative.

I will show you my best picks for the Jeep Liberty later in the article.

Another thing to consider is that the last Liberty came off the production line almost a decade ago. With that in mind and the fact that any form of electronics is always subject to wear and tear, you may need to replace the speakers even if your Jeep Liberty has installed the Infinity Sound System.

Furthermore, you can also consider replacing the stereo unit because technology has come leaps and bounds since and even , and not many people use cassette players or even CD players these days.

Most people connect their mobile devices to the head units and can even do so wirelessly.

If you remove the stereo unit from the Liberty, you have enough space to fit in a Single Din unit connected to a mounting kit with ease. This means you can upgrade the entire car’s head unit to a modern touch screen if you so choose with all the bells and whistles.

Should I use coaxial or component speakers in Jeep Liberty?

Although there are two main groups of car speaker systems: coaxial and component speakers, more popular in the Jeep Liberty are the component systems because of standard dash locations for the tweeters.

Coaxial speakers

These types of speakers with regards to car audio systems are also known as 2 or 3-way speakers. Coaxial speakers are built so that tweeter and mid-range drivers are mounted directly in front of the woofer. What is fantastic about this design is that the speakers can be placed in smaller areas, making this configuration popular in the car sound systems.

Component speakers

Component speakers are designed in the way that the tweeters are separated from the mid-range drivers and woofers.

You can typically make out component speakers by visually seeing tweeters on the dash, but not only, but there are also cars with installed tweeters in the front pillars or the upper part of the door.

This type of speaker configuration offers much better audio quality because the speakers are not only positioned for a better audio experience, but the drivers are matched with a crossover to limit frequencies.

This allows only the correct frequencies to pass through to the valid drivers (this means that bass woofers only get bass frequencies and tweeters only get high frequencies).

What speaker configuration does a Jeep Liberty use?

The Liberty has a inch speaker located in each corner of the dashboard, and these speakers are wired in parallel to the front door speakers.

This means that the Jeep Liberty uses a type of component speaker configuration in both their base standard audio system and their infinity system.

Hence, if you plan to replace the speakers in the dash, it would be best to purchase and use component speakers to keep with the same configuration.

You can, of course, use coaxial speakers, but in this case, your audio experience will be different. You will not hear high tones from the dash but instead from each door separately.

If you plan to use a component system in your Liberty, then since the tweeters are built to customized size, you will need to purchase mounting brackets to position the tweeters in the dash.

On the upside, you will still be able to use the grill of the dash that covers the tweeters.

How to remove speakers from the dash?

Below I will explain to you in detail how to remove and replace the speakers (tweeters) from your Jeep Liberty dashboard.

The process is pretty straightforward, and even if you a non-tech person, you will not need to call a professional to assist you. All you need is around 15 minutes of your time and a few simple tools.

What tools do I need to replace the speakers from the dash?

The tools you will require are nothing special, and at least some of them you will find in your house. If however, you do not have them, I added links to the quality tools that I use personally, so what you will have to do is to click the link and purchase through Amazon:

Step-by-step-guide in replacing the dash speakers in your Jeep Liberty

Removing the speakers once you have gotten to them underneath the grill is relatively simple.

The tricky part is getting access to them.

You will need to first remove the pillar trim panels from both sides of the window.

  • Bolts that hold the panels to the pillars are hidden behind the plastic clips. To remove the clips, you have to use a thin flat screwdriver or plastic panel tool and pull the clips from their locations.
  • With removed clips, you have access to the bolts (two on each side). To unbolt pillar panels, you need a socket wrench with a 5mm socket. It is worth placing removed bolts somewhere in the safe place that you can remember. I know how annoying it can be searching for a lost bolt needed to finish the job.
  • Once the bolts are removed, you can use your plastic pry tool to remove the trim panels. Removing both pillar panels will give you access to the dash panel that is covering the speakers.

If you do not remove the trim panels that run up the side of the windscreen, it will be impossible to remove the dash panel without breaking (snapping) it in some way.

  • Now that the trim panels have been removed, you can use your plastic panel removal tool to lift and remove the dash panel that is covering the speakers. Lift the dash panel carefully and unclip all 13 metal clips that hold the panel with the dash.

Finally, you have access to the speakers, and when I saw them for the first time, I was surprised how they are held in the place.

There are only two small screws that can easily get loose from the car vibrations, so it is handy to remove the panel and tighten the screws once a year, even if you do not replace the speakers. Just to make sure tweeters being kept in place.

  • But now you need to unscrew the speakers, so use the STANLEY screwdriver, remove the screws and place them somewhere safe.
  • You can now remove the speakers from their locations, but they are still connected to the vehicle by the speaker wires. To disconnect them, you have to pull the wires from the terminals. When the wires are soldered with terminals, simply cut the cables off, but do it as close to the terminals as possible.
  • Your dash speakers have been removed, so now is the time to mount the new tweeters in the dash. If you already have new speakers that is great, but if not, do not worry. In the last part of this article, I will show you my best picks for the Jeep Liberty.

To reconnect the speaker wire to your new speakers, you can use the crimper and connectors, or you can solder the wires onto the new speakers.

Either way, you will need to strip them to gain access to the wire, and you can do it with the wire strippers.

If you prefer a video tutorial for the replacement of the dash speakers, check this short video:

Which are the best dash speakers for Jeep Liberty?

When thinking about replacing dash speakers in the Jeep Liberty, there are actually two options that you may need to consider:

  • replacing only dash tweeters and leave serial door speakers
  • replacing tweeters in the dash together with the front door speakers

Depending on which option you will choose, the approach to selecting speakers will be different.

Dash Tweeters for Jeep Liberty

By looking at the number of available options on the market, choosing the right speakers can be overwhelming. This is why I decided to make it simple and do the research for you.

When it comes to the dash tweeters, there are two I recommend buying in addition to the serial door speakers. Why two?

Regardless of which tweeters you will use, you need to install them in the dash on the specially designed for Jepp Liberty adaptor rings.

  • Number one is JL Audio Cct, the least complicated direct replacement of the factory tweeters. At this price level, you will not find better tweeters. They create crisp details of all high tones, and it does not matter which music type you listen to.
  • The second alternative I have chosen is Rockford Fosgate T1T-S. These tweeters have included crossovers if you want to adjust the highs and strengthen them. T1T-S, thanks to the soft fabric domes, create delightful sounds and are one of the loudest tweeters I ever listened to.

Component system speakers for Jeep Liberty

Because original door speakers installed in Jeep liberty are large inches, you may think that there are not many options available from aftermarket speakers because this size is not so popular.

Well, this is not exactly right. Suppose you are not happy with, for example, Kicker 46CSS 6,75″ 2-way component system, which is a fantastic option for a Jeep Liberty, not only from the size but also from the performance and adjustable tweeters with up to +6dB per octave.

In that case, you can still fit standard ″, ″, or even speakers into the door. However, for smaller than ″ speakers, you have to use spacer rings.

Hence, I did a short review of the top component speakers I could buy even today for Jeep Liberty because of their quality. Yes, that is right. I used them, and I know what they can and cannot do. I am not only looking at the factory parameters like speakers’ efficiency, RSM watts, Peak Watts, or price.

I look for the overall quality and sound experience because I know how disappointing it can be to use the wrong speakers in a car. I was there, and since then, I have learned a lot.

In this article, you will not find an extensive comparison list of “best 10” or “best 20” speakers because this could cause more confusion than actually helping you.

Instead, I picked the best speakers that I use every day I can recommend at any time, so here they are:

JBL Stadium GTOC – most dynamic speakers in ″ size

GTOC is the most powerful coaxial speaker from JBL’s elite Stadium series. They do not need much of an introduction, but if you are not familiar with them, below are few key features:

  • Oversized fiberglass cones for deeper bass
  • Oversized voice coils for more power
  • Power – W RMS (W peak)
  • Frequency Response – , Hz
  • Sensitivity – 92 dB

Like all other JBL Stadium speakers are ideal for dynamic music, but not only for music. When we drive with the family and kids are watching TV during the trip, GTOCs create an outstanding mobile cinema effect.

They are available on Amazon, so if you would like to try them, click this link and check the latest price.

Thanks to the lightweight oversized glass fiber cone, the bass starts really low and is strong and precise. I am not even using an amplifier, and I am delighted with the sound they create.

However, when you use an amplifier, you will experience their full potential with exceptional performance.

Conclusion

Although Jeep Liberty was discontinued in , there are still many fans of this car today.

The only thing is that even the last model that was released is almost over a decade old, which means that its sound system will probably be worn down to a degree.

Even if your Jeep Liberty is equipped with the superior Infinity system, you probably still need to replace the speakers due to them being too old.

In addition to that, we reviewed the top component speakers systems that we think would sound great in your Jeep Liberty. So if you are in the market to replace your dash speakers (which you are because you are reading this article), check out those component speaker options.

So you have six speakers but no amps on the door speakers?

As far as I know, yes. I replaced the stock headunit with aftermarket and had no problems. I haven't yet replaced the speakers, so I don't know what's back there, but I can't imagine they are being amped twice.

I have the Group/Option detail sheet for what options were available, and it lists:

RB1: the GPS + cd changer
RCJ: Speakers - Sex, Premium Infinity, Steering Wheel Audio Controls
RSA: Sirius Satellite
I think there is also a separate option for just the 6 disc in-dash player, but I forget what it was called.

I opted for neither of those, and got the single-CD and 6-speaker that is standard in all models.

But to answer the OP question, if you have steering wheel audio controls, you have the infinity speakers, which are amped.

Trying to replace speakers in Jeep Liberty?

Hey did someone call my name??? LOL

Yep, whats wrong with those front speakers, are they totally shot or is the foam surround on them just cracked and falling apart? I had that problem in my 03' and i refoamed the speakers and they sound like new again.

Otherwise that other thread you linked to works as well. Just keep the stock amp/crossover units and run wires to a new set of speakers. I suggest you measure the resistance of the stock speaker coils though to get replacements of the same resistance otherwise you will get a mismatch and affect output of the amps.

Costs about $20 and few hours to refoam them, then give them a day for the glue to cure before using and your right back in business.

I wrote up a how-to on refoaming them, unfortunately somehow the pictures went AWOL for the post and i haven't been able to find/recover them yet. But its pretty easy. If you do a search on refoaming on YouTube you will see lots of neat videos with people showing how to refoam a speaker. The Infinity ones are really easy, you cut off the old foam, scrape the metal surround clean, glue the foam surround to the cone and give it an hour to dry, then glue it to the metal surround. Take the mesh screen and clean the bottom of the plastic, some of the foam will come off with it when you remove it, and then apply a bit of glue to it and press it in place. Set the speaker upside down and put some weight on it and give it an hour or two for it to dry. Reinstall and give it a day to make sure its all cured and then blast away!!

Mine have been holding up perfectly, and i don't play my music quiet.
