Bad O2 Sensor Symptoms Ford Fusion

Oxygen sensors play a vital role in both engine management and emissions control.  When an O2 (oxygen) sensor go bad, it’ll cause your Ford Fusion‘s engine to run less efficiently.

Your Fusion can exhibit symptoms when the Oxygen sensor has gone bad.  Or, it may exhibit none at all. Often enough, the only sign of the problem at all is the service engine soon light being on.

The good news is, if you end up discovering that the oxygen sensor is bad, they really aren’t that expensive to replace.

Bad Oxygen Sensor Symptoms:  Ford Fusion

Oxygen sensors can change the way that your Fusion’s engine runs.  Most of the time, the check engine light will come on.  It’s a good thing that the check engine light would come on, as there is more than one oxygen sensor, and they can be difficult to get to and test.

The trouble codes associated with the OBDII scan will reveal which sensor is at fault and why it is bad (at least what the computer thinks is wrong).  It is very rare for there to be a problem with an oxygen sensor, and not have the check engine light come on.

Ford Fusion Bad Oxygen Sensor Symptoms

Here are the most common symptoms of a bad oxygen sensor in your Fusion:

Service Engine Soon Light

More often than not, when an oxygen sensor in your Fusion goes bad, it will throw a diagnostic trouble code.  There are many oxygen sensor related codes.

These codes correspond with what side of the engine they are on (known as the “bank” for cylinder bank) and how far down stream they are.  For instance, an oxygen sensor at bank 1 – sensor 1 would be:

  • Bank 1-  Side of the engine with the first cylinder in the firing order.  This means that you need to look up the firing order for your particular model year and engine.
  • Sensor 1-  Sensor 1 would be the first O2 sensor in the line of sensors starting with the exhaust manifold and making its way back to the exhaust pipe.  An Oxygen sensor that is between the catalytic converter and the engine is known as an “upstream” sensor.  Oxygen sensors after the catalytic converter are “downstream sensors”.   As a rule, the upstream sensor is more important for engine timing and air/fuel ratios.

By using a OBDII scanner you can determine exactly which sensor is bad, and what is wrong with it.

Loss In Fuel Economy

Your Fusion’s oxygen sensors are responsible for helping to keep your engine running at optimal efficiency.  The engine management computer uses the data from all of the O2 sensors to keep the air/fuel mixture optimized.  A bad oxygen sensor can affect the mixture greatly.

Without being able to optimize the air fuel ratio, combustion isn’t as efficient, and fuel mileage suffers.  There could also potentially be raw fuel that enters the exhaust.  This fuel can hurt the catalytic converter.

Bad Smelling Exhaust

One of the most common symptoms that an oxygen sensor has gone bad is exhaust that does not smell good.  The smell is often described as “rotten eggs” or sulfuric.  Either way, like with rotten food, “the nose knows”.

Engine Running Rough

Without the proper air/fuel mixture, your engine won’t run as smoothly as it should. This is especially true if the mixture ends up too lean.

While a rough running engine can be a sign of a bad oxygen sensor, it is often a sign of a misfire as well.

Failed Emissions

Often enough, there won’t be any noticeable signs of a bad oxygen sensor.  You’ll go to get an emissions check done, and your Fusion fails the test.  Without a check engine light, it can be tough to lock down exactly what would cause the vehicle to fail, but oxygen sensors are one of the more common causes.

Fusion Bad O2 Sensor Symptoms & Causes:  Conclusion

There may or may not be any noticeable symptoms when your Ford Fusion’s oxygen sensor(s) go bad.  It is smart to use a scan tool to determine whether or not there is an OBDII trouble code associated with any of the sensors.  Good luck diagnosing your Fusion!

What is an Oxygen Sensor?

Would you be shocked if I said it’s a sensor to measure oxygen? Okay, but it’s a bit more than that. Cars have both upstream and downstream sensors (also known as O2 sensors). Upstream oxygen sensors are placed in front of the catalytic converter, and measure the amount of oxygen in the exhaust. The car’s computer then uses that data to determine the proper air to fuel ratio.Downstream oxygen sensors are located behind the catalytic converter, and measure the efficiency of the converter.

Signs of a faulty Oxygen Sensor

Poor performance

No one likes poor performance. That includes you, and it certainly includes your car. Faulty O2 sensors will feed misinformation to your car’s computer. The computer will then alter the engine in a way that leads to less power, some hesitation and jerkiness, and running rough. Which means you’ll be embarrassed the next time you try to show off at a green light.

Check engine light

Oh, the check engine warning light. That light that you pretend isn’t there when it lights up. How has that worked out for you? Try as you might, ignoring a check engine light won’t make it go away. And oxygen sensor failure is a common cause of the light illuminating.

How urgent is an Oxygen Sensor replacement?

You’re not really in any danger driving around with a busted O2 sensor. Your car will still be safe to drive. But the performance won’t be ideal, and you may fail an emissions test. You don’t need to drop everything and run straight to a repair, but get around to it when you can.

Ford claims that they did nothing incorrect in the recall but prior to taking my car to Ford the battery and 02 sensor were in fine working order. After the recall they were not. After replacing the battery today the car still hesitates to start and the ac system keeps making a clicking noise. This was not happening before the recall was performed. I don't think that my car will ever be the same and it is all due to Ford Lincoln of franklin replacing the airbags.

3 O2 Sensor problem of the 2010 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 10/18/2019

In motion on highway with cruise control car dashboard shows stop safely now loose acceleration. Turn car off then back on and can drive. Check engine light on. Told vacuum pump creating issue. Replaced and car okay. While in motion on highway during acceleration stop safely now entire car shuts down while driving. Loss of brakes, steering, acceleration. Get car towed back to shop and told acid leak degraded wire harness. But also told they can't ensure the car will be fixed from repairing. How does a battery leak so bad without any cracks. No shop can confirm the acid leak is causing the brake issue. Possible abs module, electronic control, O2 sensor replacement too.

4 O2 Sensor problem of the 2010 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 09/17/2019

We had driven to a football game, when we returned to the car it would not start. All the lights worked, it turned over perfectly every time, but it would not start. Had it towed to the mechanic in the morning and it started for them. However, after multiple test they were able to get it to stop starting. Checked the codes and it said O2 sensor. Replaced O2 sensor. Car died on my way home from the mechanic while pulling out onto the highway from a stop sign where vehicles are traveling 60mph with my two small children in the car. Terrifying! I barely chugged across the lanes and got the nose of my car on the shoulder. I turned the car off and after a few tries it restarted. When I got home, I took the battery cables off the battery for the weekend as I read that could help the faulty computer issue. So far, I have not experienced this issue again. A couple of weeks before this, I noticed that at speeds of 50 mph the car felt like it was speeding up and slowing down really fast like pulsing.

5 O2 Sensor problem of the 2014 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 07/01/2016

The O2 sensor has burnt out, & has been burnt out for a while. After refueling at any gas station the vehicle will not start up immediately after the key is turned. It takes several attempts to get the engine to recieve fuel & to turn over, and even then it struggles to start up or keep running. I have tried different patterns of pressing the gas pedal, alternating pressure & time without finding a reliable method. The vehicle has turned off if I do not keep the mph above 15mph for at least 10 minutes, & if I stop for longer than 60seconds, it sometimes turns off. This has caused issues in light traffic, especially with the difference in speed between my car shutting off & coasting, & cars passing at 25mph or greater. The dealership refuses to acknowledge that the O2 sensor has issues, but my personal mechanic had confirmed the issue after I had the vehicle inspected at a branch of the automotive repair chain midas. After having the sensor replaced at meineke in sept 2016, it burnt out again in October 2016. Attached is the repair reciept which we finally found today while packing for our move.

How To Replace a Ford Fusion Oxygen Sensor

The upstream 02 sensor in your 2.5 liter Ford Fusion is a vital part of your engine system. Your primary Fusion Oxygen Sensor is mounted in your exhaust header. It’s designed to analyze your exhaust fumes and report just how rich ( too much fuel ) or lean ( not enough fuel ) your engine is running. This four wire oxygen sensor is comprised of 2 heater wires, a ground wire and a signal wire.

When your Ford Fusion Oxygen Sensor is fouled or begins to fail, your engine computer won’t be able to properly correct your fuel trims. This can cause your engine to idle poorly, run rough or even cause your transmission to shift harshly.

Today I will be showing you how to replace your Fusion Oxygen Sensor in a 2014 2.5 liter equipped Fusion. This vehicle has a fouled front or primary 02 sensor, and you can replace this unit easily using hand tools.

How To Replace a Ford Fusion Oxygen Sensor

Because the 2.5 liter engine in your Ford Fusion has the exhaust facing towards the rear, it’s a good idea to work on your car when it’s cold.

Symptoms of a failed Ford Fusion Oxygen Sensor

  • Bad gas mileage
  • Check Engine Light ON
  • Harsh shifting transmission
  • Black smoke from tailpipe

How to Replace your Ford Fusion 02 sensor

To begin replacing your Fusion primary 02 sensor, you will need a 22mm open end wrench or a 02 socket. You can rent an 02 socket from your local auto parts store or simply purchase a 22mm open end wrench.

Open your hood and locate the white four pin primary upstream 02 sensor harness. Pull up on the harness to free the Fusion oxygen sensor connector.

Depress the oxygen sensor and disconnect the upstream 02 sensor for your vehicle. Once you have the 02 sensor unplugged you can begin unscrewing the primary oxygen sensor.

How To Replace a Ford Fusion Oxygen Sensor 3

Now that your primary Fusion Oxygen Sensor is unplugged, you can proceed to unscrew the 02 sensor. Take your 22mm open wrench and unscrew the upstream 02 sensor next.

How To Replace a Ford Fusion Oxygen Sensor 2

Once you have the 02 sensor removed you can install your replacement Fusion oxygen sensor. Make sure to lightly apply a layer of anti-seize to the threads of the primary 02 sensor. Screw in the 02 sensor carefully so you don’t cross thread your exhaust piping.

And after you’ve installed your upstream 02 sensor replacement, you must use a OBDII scan tool to erase any stored DTC codes. This tool can help you remove any check engine light codes from your Ford Fusion dashboard.

Don't say a word. No, no, we both know - we are not on the way. But intoxicated by the intoxication of passion We will spend the whole evening together.

Now discussing:

Near Alyonka, she covered her small mounds. Her cheeks were burning, she dropped her eyes even more, did not want to look at her colleagues. All trembled, my heart was pounding. We stood naked on the stage in the assembly hall.
