GMC’s pickups have always mirrored Chevrolet’s, but in the past decade and a half General Motors’ truck division has made an effort to differentiate the Sierra from its sibling, the Chevy Silverado, while also moving the brand upmarket. 40% of GMCs sold in were the higher-end AT4 and Denali versions of its trucks, according to the company.

The Sierra and Silverado still close kin, sharing their basic architecture and wide range of powertrain choices, but a major redesign in moved them further apart visually, at least on the outside.

The bold, stately look of the GMC, with its huge front grille, is cleaner than the busy styling of the Silverado, which are major points in the Sierra’s favor. The GMC loses some of those points on the inside, however, where things look much as they do in the Chevy but come at a higher price.

For some previously Sierra-exclusive features, such as the truck’s clever multi-function tailgate, have been incorporated into the Silverado, which muddies the waters a little for the GMC. Still, it has its own style and plenty to offer.

There are six trims for , starting with the base Sierra, which starts at $31, including freight charges. The base model is the only one that can be had with a single cab and 8-foot bed, but it’s a pure work truck, with minimal features. Further up the ladder are the SLE ($42,), Elevation ($44,), SLT ($48,), AT4 ($55,), and Denali ($57,), but there are also large number of option package that can drive up the price.

Double cab models get a foot bed, while crew cab buyers can spec or foot beds. AT4 and Denali buyers can also get a carbon-fiber-reinforced bed that’s lighter, stronger, and slightly larger than the standard bed. It’s also unique to the Sierra.

The six-way multi-function tailgate also adds utility. It can be used as a step, a load-extending stopper, or a table-like workspace. The only downside is that it can be a little vulnerable to damage if a trailer hitch is fitted.

The Sierra offers many engine choices, including a liter turbocharged four-cylinder, a liter turbodiesel inline-six, a liter V6, and a and liter V8s. Regular cab, double cab and crew cab body styles are on tap, though the top AT4 and Denali trims come only as crews. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with four-wheel drive optional on all models except the AT4, which comes with it standard.

The two real standouts in the lineup are the liter turbodiesel and the top-dog liter V8.

The , which is only available with four-wheel drive, packs a best-in-class horsepower and comes paired with a responsive Ten-speed automatic that helps it stay in the deep part of its pound-feet of torque for towing and hauling duties. The can tow up to 11, pounds. That&#;s shy of all of the Sierra&#;s domestic competitors, though the Ram requires a tow package to best it.

Curiously, it&#;s also short of the Silverado. Most Chevy trims are roughly comparable to the GMC, but the Silverado has one variation that maxes out at 13, pounds of towing capacity, and a second at 12,

The Turbodiesel delivers torque identical to the V8 but just horsepower, with a tow rating that tops out at 9, pounds. There’s less pain at the pump, however, as the diesel returns 23mpg city, 30 highway, and 26 mpg combined in rear-wheel drive form. Most of the Sierra’s engines return below average fuel economy, but the diesel is among the best in the class.

The Sierra feels planted and confident in corners. Like its sister the Silverado, its ride is firm. That’s okay on smooth roads, but it gets a little harsh when venturing off the pavement.

Drivers and passengers will be comfortable if not pampered in the mid-level Sierras, with materials that seem a little nicer than competing trucks, and plenty of room in both the double and crew cab’s rear seats. The center stack holding the 8-inch infotainment screen is easy to use, with big and easy controls. Apple Car Play and Android Auto are standard, with wireless versions, and wireless phone charging, optional. 

The poshest Sierra is the Denali, but it doesn’t look or feel as premium as similar trucks form Ford and Ram. The Denali does bring some unique features, including an available magnetic-ride adaptable suspension and a long list of standard driver-assist systems, but many are also available on the AT4, which seems to be the most well-rounded Sierra. 

The AT4, the Sierra’s off-road enthusiast variant, isn’t anywhere near as hard-core as the Ford Raptor or Ram TRX, but it’s very capable and it can be had with many of the features of the Denali while also getting it’s own cosmetic look, with body-colored bumpers and trim.

The Sierra earned a four-star overall crash test rating from NHTSA and got generally positive marks in crash test evaluations at IIHS, though it got a “marginal” rating in that agency’s small overlap front passenger side test. 

A large suite of safety gear is available including forward automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, even adaptive cruise control and lane keeping, but none are standard. Fortunately, most of the gear costs less than $2, and some is included on the Denali.

The Sierra also offers a comprehensive towing safety suite, with a new for jack-knife warning and up to 15 available camera views. These helpful cameras allow drivers to see behind whatever they’re towing and what’s going on alongside.

Regarded as the ritzier alternative to the Chevy Silverado , largely due to the popularity of its high-end Denali line, the Sierra has struggled to be as luxurious as rivals such as upper-crust Ram s. With an influx of truly luxe materials, particularly on the new top-of-the-line Denali Ultimate, GMC's half-ton pickup is a lot more pleasing. The addition of Super Cruise means the truck can be driven hands-free, too. Most models feature fully digital dashboard displays with a Google-based infotainment system. The Sierra continues to offer a strong selection of engines, including a hp V-8 and a diesel six-cylinder with pound-feet of torque. The mightiest model can tow up to 13, pounds, and the newly added AT4X is basically GMC's version of the off-road-focused Silverado ZR2.

What's New for ?

GMC gives the Sierra a substantial makeover. While its outward appearance improves with a more striking front-end design, its interior is where the upgrades are most impressive. Except for the entry-level Pro model, every Sierra has a inch digital gauge cluster and a inch touchscreen infotainment system. The cabin's revised styling is further enhanced with upscale materials throughout, and the new Denali Ultimate has real open-pore wood and leather-wrapped surfaces. All models come standard with myriad driver assists, and Super Cruise is available on the Denalis. The new AT4X represents the most rugged model with its electronic-locking front and rear differentials, special suspension components, and chunkier off-road tires. While the old V-6 engine is dropped, the turbo-four makes more torque and pairs with a more responsive transmission. Now that the Max Trailering package is compatible with the diesel engine, it's able to tow pounds more than before (13, pounds total).

Pricing and Which One to Buy

We like the Sierra Elevation trim level because it occupies a middle ground in terms of price but comes with a desirable appearance package that looks cool. You'll also have to select between a few different cab configurations and bed lengths depending on what fits your needs. All-wheel drive is available at an extra cost should you require it. GMC is also simultaneously selling pre-facelifted Sierras that are identified as "Limited" models and cost less than their updated counterparts.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Sierra is available with four different engines, two different transmissions, and rear- or all-wheel drive. The base setup is a turbocharged liter four-cylinder that makes horsepower and pound-feet of torque. It pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission. There are two V-8 options: a hp liter and a hp liter. A torque-rich diesel six-cylinder generates pound-feet. All three engines hook up to a speed automatic. The Sierra also can be had with adaptive dampers and wheels as large as 22 inches. While the Sierra lacks the extreme off-road abilities of the high-flying Ford F Raptor, it does offer two dedicated off-road variants. The rugged AT4 model boasts a inch suspension lift and other legitimate equipment. The AT4X shares exclusive features with the Silverado ZR2, including advanced spool-valve dampers, electronic-locking front and rear diffs, extra skid plates, and gnarly off-road tires mounted on black inch wheels. The Sierra has a rougher ride than the Ram , but it still handles remarkably well thanks to responsive steering and restrained body roll.

Towing and Payload Capacity

The half-ton GMC pickup can tow up to 13, pounds and support a payload up to pounds, when properly equipped.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The Sierra has several different powertrain combinations, which means its fuel-economy ratings vary. Those most concerned with fuel efficiency should entertain the optional diesel engine, which is rated up to 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. However, most Sierras will be packing the liter V-8 that comes standard with every Denali model. It's estimated to earn 16 mpg city and 20 mpg highway when paired with all-wheel drive. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside, the Sierra is designed with the driver in mind. The controls are all easy to reach and the quality of the materials generally increases with the trim levels. Starting on the SLE, a inch digital instrument panel becomes standard. Spending big on the upper trims unlocks even more desirable features, including a heads-up display and a power-adjustable steering column. The Denali Ultimate is where things get seriously upscale thanks to open-pore wood trim and a surplus of leather-covered surfaces. The front seats also feature way power adjustments as well as massage functions. Interior cubby storage is more than adequate for storing all manner of small items and stuff. While GMC doesn't offer any particularly innovative storage features, the Sierra can be had with a trick tailgate that has multiple configurations. There's also a class-exclusive carbon-fiber-reinforced cargo bed that is lighter and supposedly stronger than steel.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Most Sierra s feature a inch touchscreen through which the truck's infotainment system runs. This larger screen includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. It also has built-in Google software that allows users to access an app store, maps, and a voice assistant. Other available features include a speaker Bose audio system, wireless phone charging, and additional power points.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The half-ton Sierra has a host of standard driver-assistance technology. It's also available with nifty off-road assists, such as a Terrain Mode that allows one-pedal driving in low-speed situations. The GMC can be fitted with a multicamera system that even has views where the driver can virtually see through a trailer if they're pulling one. The Denali can be equipped with GM's Super Cruise hands-free-driving tech, which operates on a vast network of roads across the country and can even be put to use with a trailer attached. However, it'll only change lanes on its own if there's nothing hooked up to the truck. The Sierra is GMC's full-size pickup, positioned above the midsize Canyon and below the Sierra and heavy duty trucks. GMC introduced the current Sierra for the model, aiming—as it has for previous-gen trucks—to differentiate its truck from the Chevrolet Silverado with which it shares a platform. The GMC competes with other full-size trucks including the Silverado, Ford F, and Ram

Although it's not our top pick in the full-size truck segment, there's plenty to appreciate about the Sierra A slick multi-function tailgate, adaptive ride control, and an available lightweight carbon fiber bed should impress buyers. We like the styling, too, and the big GMC performed well and inspired confidence in our tow testing.

As a Truck of the Year finalist, we liked the new Duramax diesel I-6 as well as the new turbo-four. With those two engines in mind, we concluded that the Sierra doesn't need a V The truck is even a strong performer off-road, especially in AT4 guise.

Our biggest criticisms against the Sierra are inside the cabin. Everything you need is standard or available, but the cabin as a package looks dated, especially compared to the Ram 's excellent interior. This is where you'll notice the most in common with the Chevrolet, too. Value is another weak point, especially when compared to similarly priced models of the competition. The Sierra is a little expensive and a little drab inside, but this is otherwise a great truck.

The Sierra offers an impressive range of available engine options, from a high-displacement turbo-four to a turbodiesel inline-six or a liter V Engine choices are not limited to certain trims, but some powertrains cannot be paired with certain cab/bed configurations, so keep an eye out for restrictions.

GMC offers the Sierra with three cab options and three different length beds. The two- or three-seat regular cab is exclusively paired with the longest available eight-foot bed. Both double and crew cab models seat five or six, although the crew cab offers more rear seat legroom. Double cab Sierras are only offered with the 6-foot, 6-inch standard bed, though crew cab models can be ordered with the standard bed or a short 5-foot, 8-inch option.

This depends on what cab and bed combination you end up with. Each cab offers inches of legroom up front; the second row offered in double and crew cab models measures and inches of legroom, respectively. Cargo volume measures cubic feet for the long bed, for the standard bed, and with the short bed.

It should be no surprise that the Sierra's towing and payload capacities change with powertrain, drive type, and configuration. For maximum towing, a double cab standard bed Sierra with the liter V-8, 4WD, and the Max Trailering package is rated for 12, pounds. On the other end of things, a crew cab short bed Sierra with the turbo-four and 4WD can tug just 6, pounds worth of trailer. (Although GMC has not yet published full towing numbers for , it says nearly every turbo-four configuration adds 2, pounds of trailering capacity for the new model year.)

Payload numbers tell a different story. The strongest combo is a double cab standard bed Sierra with RWD and the less powerful liter V-8, which is rated for 2, pounds. GMC's diesel option falls short here; lowest payload belongs to the double cab standard bed Sierra with 4WD and the liter Duramax I-6 at 1, pounds.

In IIHS safety testing, the Sierra earns mostly Good crashworthiness scores (with one marginal rating) and a Superior score for the optional automatic emergency braking system, but the lowest possible Poor rating for its headlights. It earns a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA.

Although GMC doesn't include any driver-assist active safety features as standard, plenty are optionally available. Lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert can all be had if you tick the right boxes.

The Sierra offers or inch touchscreen infotainment systems, both of which include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. A inch instrument cluster display is standard and or inch color displays are included at higher trims. Base models make do with two-speaker audio, but a six-speaker system is standard on most trims and a seven-speaker Bose premium system is available.

If you need a pickup today, the GMC Sierra Denali is a solid choice with luxuries at its core. But if you can afford to wait a few months before your next purchase, you could catch the Sierra's upcoming mid-cycle update for the model year. It's hard to imagine paying more than $70, for any pickup, but especially when a much-needed overhaul is on the horizon. Plus, GM's advanced driver-assistance system, Super Cruise, is confirmed to be making its way to the updated model and will make what this truck is best at—trailering—a significantly richer experience.

Make no mistake: The GMC Sierra Denali is very much a tow rig meant to spend its life on the highway. Because of how much it costs, you'd be almost afraid to subject it to typical utility truck stuff. Rather, it's an expensive truck to tow your expensive toys (like boats and track cars) to the playground with—a luxury vehicle in a pickup truck wrapper.
