The Department of Social Services (DSS) can address immediate financial and social needs – from temporary to permanent housing, clothing, food stamps, financial assistance, healthcare, securing identification, etc.  DSS coordinates all placement into temporary housing.

If you began your application for services while in the County jail or through the support of the Westchester Reentry Task Force, you must go to the DSS office in White Plains (85 Court Street) to confirm your need for services.

Generally, to get cash assistance, you will need to complete an application for temporary assistance with your local DSS office. A copy of the application is linked here.  An interview is required and a decision will be made within 30 days from the date you file your application. If you indicate that you have an emergency, a decision will be made on the day of your interview.

For those NOT in reentry, know that there are four offices in Westchester County; they are in Mount Vernon, Peekskill, White Plains, and Yonkers. The one you need to go to will be based on your town and zip code. To look up which office serves your zip code, look it up here. To find the contact person, address and hours of your site go here.

If your application for assistance is denied or has not been processed promptly, you have the right to a Fair Hearing.  More information can be found at this Frequently Asked Question list of the NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (NYS ODTA).

Financial Help Provided:Temporary Assistance, Food Stamps, Medical Assistance, etc

Full Description:

The Westchester County Department of Social Services offers a wide range of help for individuals and families of low income and for families under severe financial pressure from catastrophic illness or family breakup. Our aim is to keep families together and, where possible, keep them within the community. This helps the family survive as a unit and reduces its dependency.

Employment and workforce development are major priorities as we move aggressively to help individuals gain self-sufficiency through "Work First" employment programs.

Medical Assistance helps people who cannot afford to pay for all of their medical care. Most MA in Westchester County is provided through Medicaid Managed Care.

The Housing Office provides temporary shelter to homeless families, singles, and childless couples in the county. The office has a contractual relationship with not-for-profit agencies for case management services in shelter facilities, transitional residences and emergency apartments. Homeless programs are designed to lead the homeless population toward permanent housing and independence.
