Low Water Pressure After Installing a New Tub & Shower Faucet

By Sarabeth Asaff

Water pressure and the amount of water coming from the faucet are two different things.

Low water pressure can make a bath or shower feel like it's taking forever. If you've recently replaced valves, faucets and the showerhead in your shower, yet there still seems to be a drop in pressure, there could be several things behind it. Determining the problem can help you create a solution that will make a shower an enjoyable experience again.

Updated Water Flow

If the valve or faucet you've replaced was made prior to the new water conservation laws, the drop you perceive in pressure may be a drop in water flow. Many older showerheads use approximately 5 to 8 gallons of water per minute, and some deluge models can use as many as 10 gallons. Newer water-conservation faucets and showerheads typically use about 2 1/2 gallons per minute, and may use as little as 1 1/2 gallons. If the water pressure in your house was already low, you may not have noticed it with the higher flow of water. Using a low-flow faucet or showerhead may cause you to notice lower pressure for the first time.

Wrong-Sized Valve

Shower valves are sold in two sizes: 1/2-inch and 3/4-inch. This is because the plumbing coming into your home starts from a pipe that is more than 1 inch, then drops in size. Some homes drop only to 3/4-inch pipe, which translates into higher water volume and water pressure. Other homes drop to 1/2-inch pipe, which can compromise pressure by as much as 80 percent. If you've put the wrong-sized valve in your shower system, this can also compromise pressure. If your home has 3/4-inch pipes and you've reduced it to a 1/2-inch shower valve, you will notice a dramatic drop in pressure.

Wrong System

If the new tub and shower faucet you've installed is in addition to one that was already there, you may have a problem with the amount of water entering your home. If you have a well supplying your water, it may only supply about 5 gallons of water per minute. Body sprays take approximately 2 1/2 gallons of water a minute, while a showerhead can take roughly 8 gallons per minute. Adding a second water source to a low-flow household will translate into a drop in water pressure at each of the sources of water.

Adjustable Showerhead

If you replaced the showerhead at the same time you replaced the valve, you may notice a drop in pressure as a result. If your previous showerhead was a low-pressure model, it could have been masking a problem that your new showerhead is now revealing. Some showerheads are also adjustable; you determine the amount of water pressure by twisting the head or controlling a small switch on the side. Your new showerhead also most likely has a water restricter inside. Removing this restricter may translate into higher pressure once the head is returned to position.

A kitchen faucet has many uses, making it one of our most important fixtures. For this reason, we need it to be in perfect working order all the time – and if the water pressure in our kitchen faucet is too low, it makes all kinds of daily chores more difficult.

The good news is, if this is a problem you are facing, it’s often easy to fix, and this means you will probably be able to resolve the issue without the need to call in a plumber. If that sounds useful, here’s everything you need to know about low water pressure in a kitchen faucet.

For more information about a few things we don’t have space to mention here, check out this video that gives you some more tips about raising or lowering the water pressure in your home.

Localized problems or general?

If you have low pressure in your kitchen faucet, you need to work out where the problem is coming from. Is it a problem that’s just affecting your kitchen faucet, do you have problems throughout your house or is it a problem in your whole neighborhood?

The first thing to do is to check other water outlets in your house. If you have low water pressure in other fixtures and not just the kitchen faucet, it is likely to be a problem related to your whole house. If not, it’s just in the kitchen.

If it affects your whole house, you can also ask your neighbors if they are suffering from a similar problem. If your neighbors also have issues with low water pressure, the problem lies with the municipal water supply, and you will need to contact the authorities to deal with it.

Problems for your whole house

Problems for your whole house

If yours is the only house in the neighborhood with low water pressure, there are a few things you can do.

First, try checking the pressure of the water coming into your home at the mains – and also check the valve is fully open. Another possibility is that the valve where the water enters your home is old and needs replacing. If so, contact a plumber or do the work yourself.

If this isn’t the problem, you should also check your plumbing system for leaks. Leaks will cause the pressure in your whole house to drop, and leaking water can also cause serious damage. This means you need to identify any possible leaks as soon as possible and fix them.

Problems with the kitchen faucet

Problems with the kitchen faucet

If you are able to determine that the problem is only in your kitchen faucet – so it isn’t in the rest of your house and your neighbors don’t have a problem – there are a couple of easy solutions you can try to fix the issue.

The two most common reasons for low water pressure are a blocked aerator and a clogged cartridge, and these problems are found in all kinds of kitchen faucet, including pull-out kitchen faucets, or commercial kitchen faucets, or touchless kitchen faucets and more.

Here’s how to check and fix these problems.

Blocked aerator

The aerator is a device attached to the faucet spout to infuse air into the water while also limiting the flow. With time, aerators can become blocked with mineral deposits. When this happens, follow these steps to fix it:

  1. Put the plug into the sink’s drain

Put the plug into the sink’s drain

Before you start, put the plug into the sink’s drain to stop any parts accidentally falling down the drain hole when you remove them.

  1. Remove the aerator

Remove the aerator

You should be able to simply twist the aerator off the end of the faucet. However, if you can’t, you can use a pair of pliers. If using pliers, wrap some plastic tape around the end of the faucet first to avoid damaging it.

  1. Disassemble and clean

Disassemble and clean

Disassemble the aerator and clean inside with a toothbrush. If the deposit is particularly encrusted, you can also try boiling the aerator in vinegar to dissolve it. Another technique is to poke a pin through each individual hole to unblock them one by one.

  1. Test the faucet before replacing the aerator

Test the faucet before replacing the aerator

Run the faucet without the aerator to test the water pressure. If the water runs normally without the aerator, you will know you have identified the problem.

  1. Replace the aerator

Replace the aerator

Replace the aerator on the faucet and test the water. It should now run with normal pressure.

Tip: Another technique you can use is to fill a plastic baggie with vinegar and water with a ratio of 1:1. Fasten the baggie over the faucet head with a rubber band so the faucet head is immersed in vinegar and leave it overnight. This should help dissolve any mineral build-up.

Check the cartridge

If the problem isn’t the aerator, it may be the cartridge. Here’s how to check and fix this issue – or for a preview, here’s a video with very clear explanation for how to change a faucet cartridge.

  1. Put the plug in the drain hole

Put the plug in the drain hole

As before, start by putting the plug in the drain hole to stop anything falling down.

  1. Turn off the water valves

Turn off the water valves 1

The water valves are beneath the sink. Turn them both to the “off” position.

  1. Remove the faucet handle

Remove the faucet handle

Pop off the protective cap with a flat head screwdriver and remove the faucet handles. You will need either a Phillip’s head screwdriver or an Allen key for this.

  1. Remove the cartridge

Remove the cartridge

Remove the cartridge nut with a wrench and then remove the cartridge. Place all the pieces in a line in the correct order so you know how to put them back together after you’ve finished.

  1. Clean the cartridge and replace

Clean the cartridge and replace

Clean the cartridge of any gunk that was blocking the water flow and replace the cartridge in the same way as you removed it.

  1. Turn on the water and test

Turn on the water and test

Turn the water valves back on beneath the sink and test. The water pressure should now have returned to normal.

Usually a simple problem to fix

If you have localized low water pressure in your kitchen faucet and nowhere else in your home, as we have seen, the problem is usually either a blocked aerator or a clogged cartridge.

If this is the problem you have, you’re in luck since these are both very simple problems to fix. By following our instructions, you can easily do it yourself without the need to call in a professional to do it for you.

How To Repair Low Pressure In A Kitchen Faucet

One of the biggest water problems faced by homeowners is low water pressure to the kitchen faucet, showers and other water outlets. To fix this problem you need to determine the cause. Many such problems, particularly in the kitchen, are easy to fix, and may not even require the services of a plumber. You might however be interested in our article on the best kitchen faucets in case you are looking for some kitchen upgrades.

Is the problem localized or general?

The first step to resolving the issue with low water pressure to the kitchen faucet is to determine the size of the problem. If you have a problem with other outlets in the house then the low water pressure is less localized than just the kitchen. Water pressure describes the force at which the water moves through your plumbing system. It can change during the day as the demand for water changes.

If you have low water pressure in the whole house, you should check with the neighbors to see whether they have the same situation. If they do, it is likely an issue with the municipal supply. If this is the case and you can’t live with the problem, you may have to outlay some cash and install a water booster to increase the pressure to your outlets. If the neighbors are happy with their water pressure then the problem lies elsewhere.

Where to look when yours is the only home in the area with a problem

If you have recently embarked on remodeling and added water outlets to your home, the increased demand could have caused the pressure to drop. If this is the case you may need to increase the size of your main water pipe.

Many homes have a regulator known as a pressure reducing valve that controls the pressure of the municipal water into the home. Locate yours. It is bell-shaped and is usually located on the water line where it enters the home.

Adjust the setting. To increase water pressure, loosen the screw located on the top of the valve by turning it counterclockwise. Run the water again to check the pressure. Sometimes these valves can become worn and will affect the water pressure to some or all of the faucets in the house. If you suspect that this is the case replace it yourself or call a plumber.

Leaks in the water pipes can also lead to a reduction in water pressure. To check whether there is a leak anywhere in the system, switch off your main water valves. Take a reading from the water meter. Go back in a couple of hours and check the meter again. If the reading has gone up, you have a leak in your pipework.

Fixing the water pressure problem when only the kitchen faucet is affected

If you have determined that the water pressure problem relates only to your kitchen faucet, the solution is at hand. Before you get too technical check the water valves. These are normally located right under the kitchen sink. There should be two, one for hot water and one for cold. Ensure that they are both fully open. If they are not this may be the cause of your problem.

Whilst under the sink, check the water supply hoses to make sure that they are not kinked. This would cause a partial blockage with a subsequent drop in water pressure. Low pressure in the kitchen faucet is typically caused by one of two reasons – a blocked aerator or a blocked cartridge.

How to check the aerator

The aerator fits into the end of the faucet. It acts as a restrictor that is used to reduce the water flow by adding air. It has many small holes in it which can become clogged with mineral deposits and sediment over time. It is the most likely cause of the water pressure problem and the easiest to resolve.

  1. Remove the aerator from the faucet. Try unscrewing it by hand. This can be surprisingly difficult. You may need to resort to a pair of pliers. Place plastic tape on the gripping surfaces so that they don’t scratch the metal, or alternatively use a cloth to protect the metal
  2. If you are unable to remove the aerator, you may have to try to remove any clogging with the aerator still in place. Pour vinegar into a plastic bag and tie this around the end of the faucet for several hours. This should help to dissolve some of the debris that is causing the problem.
  3. If you get the aerator off, you can soak it in a dish of vinegar and warm water for several hours. If it is still blocked after this you can try using a commercial lime remover to clean it. Failing this you can replace the aerator. They are not very expensive.
  4. While the aerator is off run your faucet to determine whether you have found the cause of the problem. If the pressure is still low after the aerator is removed the problem must be further down the waterway, and you may have to employ the services of a plumber.
  5. After you have cleared the aerator, rinse it out and screw it back again. Check the water pressure. If you have cleared the mineral deposits and sediments from the aerator your water pressure should be restored.

How to check the cartridge

Most modern faucets have cartridges. These have small holes which can sometimes become blocked with debris. This will cause a drop in water pressure to the faucet. To check the cartridge -

  1. Turn off the water supply. Run the faucet to allow all the water to flow out. Put the plug into the sink so that you don’t drop anything down the drain.
  2. Locate the screw under the faucet. Remove the screw cap by means of the screwdriver. Use the Allen wrench to remove the screw that fastens down the faucet.
  3. Lift the handle off the faucet and remove the cartridge nut. Take out all the pieces that are in the faucet and place them in the correct order upon a towel so that you know exactly how to put them back.
  4. Take the cartridge out and wash it under clean running water.
  5. If there is a buildup of limescale on the cartridge, soak it in vinegar to loosen the deposits. If the cartridge is looking a little worn it may be time to replace it.
  6. Place the cleaned or new cartridge back into the faucet making sure that you align it with the slots in the faucet cavity. Replace all the parts that you have removed and then check your water pressure.

If you have a pullout spray head check that too

Similarly, if your faucet is a commercial kitchen faucet with a pullout sprayer this could also cause the water pressure problem. To check remover the spray head from the hose. Switch on the water. If the pressure is adequate then the spray head is the problem and probably has a mineral build up. Clean the mesh with a vinegar and warm water solution.

It could be a blockage

If neither cartridge or the aerator is causing the low pressure, you may find that you have a blockage in the pipe leading to the faucet. Over time your pipes can become clogged up, especially if you are in a hard water area. Mineral deposits build up in the pipes. The buildup can slowly strangle off the water supply. Galvanized pipes, in particular, tend to build up debris and sediment over time.

To inspect the pipes, you will need to open a pipe access point. Unscrew the riser and back up the pipe so that you don’t damage it. Place a bucket under the pipe so that you don’t spill water and turn the water on. Now you can check the pressure of the water coming from the pipe.

When only the hot water pressure is low

If it only the hot water pressure that is low, you should check the water heater. The hot water shutoff valve may be faulty or partially closed. If it is even slightly shut it can have an enormous impact on the water pressure.

Once properly closed, check your water pressure again. If the pressure is still not good the problem may lie with the pipework to the heater or with the heater itself. It is hazardous to work with water heaters so it is now time to call the plumber. Plumbers have diagnostic tools that they can use to locate blockages and leaks in pipes.

Most low-pressure problems are easy for the DIY enthusiast to fix

There are some problems that require professional help. Understanding the cause and the scope of the problem can go a long way in helping you to resolve your plumbing problems without running up the bills. A few simple checks may be all that is required to resolve the low-pressure water problems in your kitchen.
