Dragon Ball: Goku Black, Explained as Simply as Possible

Goku Black's backstory in Dragon Ball Super is extremely convoluted, involving time travel, multiple universes, body-switching and Super Dragon Balls.

Dragon Ball Super has spent much of its time expanding both the cosmos and the mythology of the Dragon Ball universe. As if 11 other universes each possessing their own Gods of Destruction, Angels and Supreme Kai weren't enough, the series decided to bring time travel back into the mix for its most complex villain origin story yet. Goku Black's appearance in Future Trunks's timeline is complicated, to say the least. The body-swapping, time-traveling, multiverse-hopping villain has likely made more than a few viewers pause to grab a pencil and paper.

Dubbed "Goku Black" by Future Bulma because he looks like Goku, wears black and is evil, the true identity of this villain is eventually revealed to be Zamasu, the apprentice to the Supreme Kai of Universe But where did he come from and why does he look like Goku? In order to comprehend the series of events that led to Future Trunks's timeline being destroyed again, it's important to understand Zamasu himself.

A Supreme Kai's responsibility to their assigned universe is to kickstart life, then simply observe its progress. Zamasu hails from Universe 10, where he studied to become the new Supreme Kai. However, Zamasu grows to despise the mortals he is tasked with watching over, seeing them as violent, selfish, ugly stains on the beauty of life. This hatred even warps into a hatred for the other gods, who allow the mortals to run rampant because they refuse to interfere. He eventually develops a plan, "Project Zero Mortals," in which he will eradicate all mortals and gods from the entire multiverse.

Despite having an admittedly compelling origin story for a villain, Zamasu's journey from a disgruntled Kai into an evil clone of Goku required a tremendous amount of hoop-jumping. In the main timeline, thanks to knowledge gained from Future Trunks's arrival, Beerus travels to Universe 10 and destroys Zamasu, thus sparing the series' main timeline from his plans. However, in an alternate future where Beerus does not Destroy Zamasu, the evil Kai apprentice kills his master and steals his Time Ring before traveling to Universe Six, home of the Super Dragon Balls.

In this new, alternate future, Zamasu uses the all-powerful Super Shenron to wish to swap bodies with that timeline's Goku. As a Supreme Kai, he is severely limited in terms of combat strength, explaining why he wanted Goku's Saiyan abilities, so that he may carry out his plan himself. Once Zamasu obtains Goku's body and power, he promptly slaughters Gohan, Goten and Chi-Chi before using the stolen Time Ring to travel to Future Trunks's timeline. There, he joins the Zamasu of that time to enact Project Zero Mortals. It is here that he becomes known as Goku Black, as Future Trunks and Bulma are unaware of his real identity.

All that said, it doesn't quite explain why Goku Black turns pink. Zamasu's wish transferred his being into Goku's body, meaning he is now technically a Kai and a Saiyan, with access to all of Goku's Saiyan power. When mortals like Goku and Vegeta use god power to become Super Saiyan, their hair turns blue. However, Zamasu is a god, so when he uses god power to become a Super Saiyan, his hair turns pink, or Rosé, as he calls it. Put simply, Super Saiyan Blue and Super Saiyan Rosé are the same forms, the difference in color just reflects whether the user is mortal or a god.

Dragon Ball has always been a fan of evil Gokus, like the non-canon Turles or when Captain Ginyu also stole Goku's body. Super showed impressive determination to making another evil Goku, folding in the expanded series mythology as well as the return of Future Trunks for good measure. Unfortunately, most of Goku Black's time in the series was spent explaining how he came to be in the first place. Zamasu's plan probably would have worked if he didn't have to spend so much time explaining it to everyone.

EX Super Saiyan Rosé Goku Black (Yellow)

Stats

Why this Tier?

  • His stats are excessively low.
  • Surprisingly, however, he does a good job of tanking.

Discussion

Despite the terrible stats, Goku Black actually has a role as a meatshield, but that's where it ends. His damage is woeful, and he can feel clunky to use otherwise.

"I look down on existence from a much higher perspective than you do. I witness this world, this universe and the truth of all things. That yields deeper understanding. Wisdom. The realization that all mortals should be destroyed. The one and only mistake among all divine creation. That is what mortals are. And this mistake is egregious. To shape existence into the beautiful utopia it was always meant to be, the mistake must be corrected. I will purge all mortals from existenceIn place of the gods WHO REFUSE TO ADMIT FAILURE!!"

Goku Black (ゴクウブラック,Gokū Burakku), usually referred to as Black, is the main antagonist of the "Future" Trunks Saga of Dragon Ball Super. His true identity is Zamasu (ザマス,Zamasu) from the unaltered main timeline within Universe He is a former North Kai and Supreme Kai apprentice serving his former master Gowasu.

Goku Black visited Universe 6, went to the Super Dragon Balls from the unaltered main timeline within that universe, summoned Super Shenron from said timeline, wished to switch bodies with Goku from the unaltered main timeline within Universe 7, and Super Shenron granted Goku Black's wish. Goku Black sought to destroy all mortals alongside Future Zamasu.[3] He was then given the name "Goku Black" by Future Bulma when he initially referred to himself as Goku.[4]

Concept and creation

It was revealed in an interview with Akira Toriyama that the inspiration for Goku Black originated from the "copy of the hero" idea in media such as "False Ultra Man" of the Ultraman series or "False Kamen Rider" of the Kamen Rider franchise.[5][6]

Appearance

His original appearance is the same as his future timeline counterpart, being an above-average height Kai of slim built and green skin, and with a white Mohawk. However, after killing his former master, Gowasu, he wore his matching set of green with gold chains Potara earrings. After Goku Black's wish to switch bodies with Goku from the unaltered main timeline within Universe 7 was granted by Super Shenron from the unaltered main timeline within Universe 6, the Saiyan body underwent some physical changes. While Goku Black is still essentially identical, he has a slightly darker skin tone and more "defined" eyes, along with a somewhat skinnier physique. His hair is also a noticeably dark shade of black with only four front spikes and three back ones. While initially wearing his Supreme Kai attire, he soon after his wish to switch bodies with the Saiyan was granted began wearing a dark grey vest, a long-sleeved black undershirt with a turtleneck, a red sash, black pants and pointy white boots. He also gave the right Potara earring to his future counterpart while still wearing the other earring on his left ear. In the anime, he also wears a Time Ring on his right index finger, while in the manga, his counterpart is entrusted with wearing it. Also, in the manga, he has thick black outlines around his eyes, similar to those who fell under the control of Babidi's Manipulation Sorcery.

Personality

Before acting on his dark impulses, as Zamasu, he was a calm and patient individual, willing to listen to his teacher's words. However, he long harbored an utter hatred for mortals, perceiving them as a blasphemy and the gods' greatest mistake. He also came to hate the gods as well for not doing anything about their "mistake". After giving in to his desires, Zamasu mercilessly killed his former master as his first step down a dark path. Despite his cruel, aggressive, and certainly unsympathetic actions, even to his own kind, Zamasu feels perfectly vindicated, truly seeing no evil in his actions, after he scoured several timelines as proof that mortals are a corruption of existence as a whole that prevents it from becoming a true paradise. He also believes that humanity has only continued to exist for all this time because the gods are too prideful to acknowledge their failure in creating mortals. Also, rather than using the Super Dragon Balls from the unaltered main timeline within Universe 6 to wish for mortals to be exterminated, he preferred to wish to switch bodies with Goku from the unaltered main timeline within Universe 7, displaying his infatuation with the Saiyan. This also seems to suggest that he wanted to destroy mortals by himself, as he believed that it was his own responsibility as if he were the Supreme God.

He became much more emotional upon his wish to switch bodies with the Saiyan being granted, and Zamasu becoming Goku Black, gaining many opposite characteristics to his host body's personality. Like his future counterpart, he is extremely sadistic, callous, bloodthirsty, and hypocritical, as seen when he kills Bulma, along with the vast majority of the Earthlings, believing it to be "justice", despite his blood-lusting delight in it and his delight in the anger of Goku from the main timeline within Universe 7 over him killing Chi-Chi and Goten from the unaltered main timeline within said universe. Goku Black showed a sense of brutality and certainly ruthless savagery, when he coldly tortures his foes/target, hoping to extend the pain and suffering, as shown when he fractured Future Trunks' arm and shoots a barrage of ki blasts at his defenseless opponent. However, he retains his past self's politeness and is shown to be graceful during his first fight with Goku as Black. Also somewhat of a masochist, Black is shown to revel in others inflicting pain on himself, both from his newfound passion for battle and personal drive to grow stronger from every attack that strikes his new body. This trait seems to have been drawn somewhat from Goku from said timeline within said universe. In addition, Goku Black appears to be somewhat unhinged, as he occasionally bursts into slightly deranged laughter, as shown when he fought Goku from the main timeline within said universe for the first time, and also due to his sudden shifts in mood, as seen when he explains his motivation for wiping out mortals. While willing to kill regardless, he prefers and desires to fight strong opponents, even going as far as holding back his full power in order to further enjoy a fight, always keeping it just ahead of his opponent's. Black also shares the sense of determination of Goku from the unaltered main timeline within said universe, never letting up on a goal once he sets his mind on it, as he vowed to find Future lTrunks after he escaped to the past. He also shares Goku's sense of general independence, wishing to grow stronger through his own personal effort rather than taking shortcuts. This shows a distinct difference to his counterpart. Unlike Future Zamasu, who views immortality as an ideal trait worthy of a god, Black openly stated his disinterest in such a power. Also, he is somewhat vain, as when he first revealed his Super Saiyan Rosé form, he described it as beautiful, towering above "the whole universe", and stated to Goku that he should rejoice, as he had reached the height of beauty by his hand.

In the manga, however, Black's personality was drastically different from his anime counterpart. While Black in the anime always manages to stay calm and never lose his composure, even when losing a battle, Black in the manga is more prone to losing his composure the moment things do not go his way. This was shown when he was losing his battle against Vegeta from the main timeline within said universe, where he breaks down in a fit of rage. The difference in their personality is also reflected in their contrasting fighting styles. Black in the anime performs his attacks with a sense of finesse and flamboyance. Black in the manga, however, prefers to use brute force alone to overwhelm his enemies, taking a more aggressive fighting style. The difference in personalities is likely due to Black in the manga never meeting Goku personally prior to their encounter in the future timeline, and thus never had a personal connection with Goku. This ultimately resulted in none of Goku's traits such as a composed demeanor when fighting or his passion for battle. Similarly, his relationship with Future Zamasu in the manga was significantly different from that of the anime. In the latter, he and Future Zamasu genuinely considered each other as kindred allies, while in the manga, Goku Black considered Future Zamasu to merely be a pawn, while Future Zamasu likewise considered Black contemptible for forsaking his divine body, for the sake of power, and at one point, when they were on the ropes, they were even willing to turn on each other briefly. Black was also more sadistic in the manga, as evidenced when he not only proceeded to mortally wound the standard Gowasu when the latter attempted to talk sense into Goku Black, but also asked rhetorically while stabbing him whether Gowasu really thought it would have worked a "third time", referring to Gowasu's earlier attempts at talking him out of his plans.

Another interesting trait is one he and Future Zamasu share with each other, using the fact that Future Trunks violated the taboo of time travel as a justification for their morally questionable goal of exterminating all mortal life. They are also similar to Android 13 who likewise uses mortal failings to justify his goals.

Biography

Background

Main article: Zamasu He and the Zamasu from the altered main timeline were originally the same entity. However, Future Trunks time travelling to the past altered the present, main timeline's original history, and Beerus destroying the Zamasu in the altered main timeline split the timeline. Thus, the Zamasu who became Goku Black is - or was - exactly the same individual, and has all of the same histories as the Zamasu from the altered present timeline prior to his destruction at Beerus' hand. Due to the powers of the Time Ring, the death of the present Zamasu from the altered main timeline, due to Beerus, did not affect him.

Zamasu was originally the North Kai of Universe [7] However, due to his prodigious fighting skill, he was selected to become a Supreme Kai-in-training under one of the current Supreme Kai, Gowasu.[8] With his continuous distrust of mortals and growing dismay of the Kais' passive and indirect influence of the universe's development, he ultimately rejected his teachings and went rogue, developing his Project Zero Mortals. To which, his ultimate goal became to annihilate all mortals and gods in a specific timeline, then build up from there, to purge all mortals and gods from all of existence with it, making the multiverse in his perspective a "beautiful utopia", rid of the mortals who ruin it and the gods who do nothing to stop them. Requiring a Time Ring for his plans, Zamasu killed Gowasu and took his Potara to become a Supreme Kai, so he could wield the Time Ring.[9]

For the next part of his plan, in the anime learning of Goku's might surpassing even the Supreme Kais, Zamasu went into the future with a Time Ring, gathered the Super Dragon Balls and wished to switch bodies with Goku. Upon his wish being granted he decided to erase all personal ties to Goku's past by killing Goku and his family,[9] and took the name of Son Goku for himself.[4] In the manga Zamasu swapped bodies with Monaka - the victor of the Tournament of Destroyers, however upon realizing that Monaka was, in fact, weak he swapped bodies with Goku instead.[10]

Despite his newfound power, Zamasu needed to find a reality without a God of Destruction, still fearing their intrusion to his plans. With that being said, Zamasu began travelling to various parallel realities in search of someone with the ideal settings so he could act initially unnoticed. Eventually, he found one in Future Trunks' reality where the final Supreme Kai of Universe 7, Shin, was killed in a battle to defeat Babidi and Dabura, thereby killing Future Beerus due to the life-link.[11] He also met his counterpart from that timeline, Future Zamasu, immediately allying with him shortly after killing Future Gowasu. The two then gathered the Super Dragon Balls and first wished for Future Zamasu to become immortal. They then travelled another year into the future to wish for the Super Dragon Balls to destroy themselves and stealthily annihilated all the Supreme Kais of that reality (which thereby killed the other Gods of Destruction) to leave their path of destruction unchallenged.[12]

Beginning the main part of his plans, Zamasu travelled to many different planets and destroyed all life on them for "the sake of justice" under the name, "Son Goku". Upon his arrival on Earth, he goes on a rampage, his first attack causing half of mankind to be wiped out. Since his arrival, Zamasu became known as a terrifying warrior only known as Goku Black. Those who survived formed resistance cells, with Mai leading them. Trunks was also a huge aid to the resistance and many times came face to face with Black but would be unable to defeat him. At one point, Mai and the Resistance attempted to lead Black into an area rigged with remote-detonated explosives, but Black emerged unscathed. Trunks then confronted Black who then explained his motives for destroying humanity being his views of the human race as violent and corrupt and a failed creation of the Gods. Black effortlessly defeated Trunks but the Saiyan was able to escape with Mai when she blinded Black with a flash grenade.

"Future" Trunks Saga

Main article: "Future" Trunks Saga

"It's about time Saiyan. You've been running around making messes for too long and now I'm going to choke the life from you. I can't wait to watch you die."
&#; Goku Black's first words as he intercepts and prepares to finish off Future Trunks in SOS from the Future: A Dark New Enemy Appears!

Trunks survived their encounter and, for a year, prepares to travel back in time using a Time Machine with Bulma in an attempt to save the future. Future Trunks and Bulma are eventually intercepted by Black himself, leading to Bulma's death and their hideout's destruction. Trunks narrowly escapes with a canister holding enough fuel for a one-way trip back to the past while Black pursues him. Later, as Trunks and Mai arrive at Capsule Corporation, Black attacks them both, knocking out Mai and heavily injuring Trunks. An angry Future Trunks transforms into a Super Saiyan and engages Black in battle, but is easily beaten. As Future Trunks fires a Masenko, Black blocks the attack, but Trunks disappears. He then begins to sense for Future Trunks' ki, and spots Future Trunks about to leave in the time machine. Black fires a Kamehameha, but the attack narrowly misses as Future Trunks leaves, and Black realizes that Trunks' ki has completely disappeared from this world. Growing angry, Black vows to find Future Trunks as he has nowhere to run.

In the anime, while Black tries to figure out how Trunks escaped, a Time Ring that he wears has a sudden reaction which creates a portal to the past. After going through the portal, Black finds himself in the present timeline which he quickly spots Future Trunks and eventually introduces himself to Goku. When Black arrives in the past everybody's shocked that he looks exactly like Goku. Black then realizes that it was time travel and also seems to know Vegeta and the God of Destruction Beerus. Trunks, upon seeing him, is enraged and goes to fight him but he is stopped by Vegeta. Goku goes in his place, beginning to battle with Black. Black opens with the same golden-black ki sphere he attempted to use on Trunks. Goku blocks it while the force of the ki sphere knocks Goku into a rocky plateau. Goku powers up to Super Saiyan 2 and fights back. By sharing the fist blow with Goku, Black is amazed at Goku's power as a Super Saiyan 2 and gets excited against such a powerful opponent.

Now, Black powers up a little and releases his evil ki. Black then attacks Goku with several punches, eventually landing a hit on Goku in the abdomen and kicks him away, following up with a barrage of ki blasts. Trunks is confused as to why Goku is not using his Super Saiyan 3 powers when Vegeta explains Goku's bad habit of holding back his power during the beginning of battles. While the fight goes on, Black and Goku are evenly matched with both of them hiding their true power. Goku threatens Black, betting him that he'll be able to force out his doppelgänger's true power. Goku bolts and lands several punches until Black manages to throw Goku into another mountain.

While Black gloats, he feels a distortion in Time and Space. The distraction creates an opening for Goku, as he lands a sharp kick in Black's abdomen. Black, clearly damaged but delighted, claims that the pain will make him even stronger as he powers up even further. Black stops and throws a large ki blast at Goku, who managed to deflect it. Black then follows up with a kick to the Saiyan's head, which knocks him into the ground, forming a large crater in the process. As Black realizes the Time Machine's function after Future Trunks accidentally reveals it, Goku returns with full force and lands a sharp punch in Black's stomach. They both lock fists and go into a power struggle as the pull from the distortion gets stronger and Black pulls towards it, interrupting the fight. Before getting pulled back to his own timeline, Black destroys Trunks' Time Machine. During the battle, Beerus points out that Black is clearly not Goku, noting his ki feels strange and dark.

In the anime throughout the fight, the Time Ring attempts to pull him back to the future. Black attempts to resist its pull but is unable to. Before being pulled into the portal, Black fires a Ki blast at Trunks' Time Machine, destroying it, effectively stranding Trunks in the past. Upon returning to Future Trunks' time, he collapses from his injuries after his fight with Goku before regaining his composure. Black proceeded to test his power, using a Golden-Black ki sphere, causing it to grow bigger than its usual size before firing it, pleased at his increased power and integrating Goku's fighting style into his own. He also mocks that Trunks is now stranded in the present, leaving him free to terrorize the future as he pleases. With Trunks's departure, Black moves to attack the base of the resistance formed by the Earthlings, who struggle to defend it from him and are for the most part murdered by Black then and there, the few survivors having to flee and designate a new base.

After Trunks travels to the future with Goku and Vegeta, Black is surprised, given his destruction of Trunks' time machine, and confronts them, Black fights Vegeta who was able to secure a match with him first via a round of rock-paper-scissors with Goku. Black moves close to Vegeta, touching his neck in a show of his speed before Vegeta attacks him with a barrage of punches. Suddenly Vegeta stops, wondering what he just felt as Black slowly walks out of the crater and kicks Vegeta away not having taken any damage at all, though he is impressed by Vegeta's strength and offers to show him something as a "reward". Black then transforms into a form to resume fighting Vegeta, naming the form "Super Saiyan Rosé" in the spirit of Goku's naming pattern. Black mocks Vegeta, calling him the opening act before his fight with Goku. Enraged, Vegeta charges Black and unleashes another assault, but Black effortlessly avoids every punch. Black lands a mighty blow to Vegeta and prepares to finish him with another but Vegeta catches it and launches a counter-assault. Before Vegeta can land any real damage, Black quickly stops Vegeta by turning his aura into an energy blade and stabs Vegeta clean through the right side of his chest, mortally wounding him, acknowledging that Vegeta has strengthened him through their fight. He thanks Vegeta for the warm-up and tells him to know his place before pulling his blade out and allowing the injured Saiyan to fall to the ground, nearly dead, prompting Goku's entry into the brawl. The two fight evenly in the eyes of Future Trunks, though Vegeta determines that Black is overwhelming Goku. Black indeed does defeat Goku, but just as he prepares to fire a Kamehameha at him, Future Zamasu stops him as he arrives, recalling Black's prior promise to save killing Goku for him.

The two quickly conflict as Black insists that his body is yearning to fight Goku and battles him in an even match while Future Zamasu separately duels Trunks until Future Zamasu grabs hold of both Goku and Trunks to allow for Black to fire a beam at the pair which he does in the form of a Kamehameha, causing the two Saiyans to take damage. Black then joins with Future Zamasu in trying to fire at the pair, but their attack is stopped by Vegeta, allowing Goku and Trunks to escape. Black attempts to locate them by sensing their ki, but has trouble thanks to its faintness and being mixed among others.

In the meantime, Goku, Trunks, and Vegeta use a time machine to return to the past, which Black later is able to sense as it departs, failing to catch them, with Future Zamasu insisting that they would return.

In the manga, however, Black faces off against Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta, becoming a Super Saiyan to fight him. However, Vegeta manages to hold an advantage against Black and then further transforms into a Super Saiyan Blue and easily overwhelms Black, even after he transforms into a Super Saiyan to try to even the odds. Black states that he couldn't achieve the Super Saiyan Blue form, and is overwhelmed by Vegeta. When Vegeta is about to kill Black with his Final Flash, Black is saved by Future Zamasu. Future Zamasu heals Black, allowing him to receive a power-up from the near-death experience and causing his god mind and Saiyan body to become more connected. This allows Super Saiyan Black to fight on par with Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta, and after getting healed again, he gains yet another power up from his injuries and evolves into his Super Saiyan Rosé form. He then proceeds to face Vegeta while Future Zamasu faces Goku. Thanks to his new form, Black manages to hold an advantage over Vegeta and soon takes him down, and at the same time, Future Zamasu takes down Super Saiyan Goku. However, Future Trunks uses the Solar Flare to stop them in their tracks and the Saiyan trio manage to escape. Future Zamasu states that they will just have to wait for them, but Black locates Future Mai's energy and teleports to her. However, they fall into a trap, and Future Trunks takes Future Zamasu out of the fight by piercing through him with his sword. Black is then sent flying away by the empowered Trunks, as Black gets up, he witnesses Vegeta and Goku escaping in the Time Machine, but before he can attack with a ki blast, he finds himself being beaten back by Future Trunks. Due to Trunks' interference, Goku and Vegeta managed to escape back to the past, while Black tells Trunks to not get carried away before battling him.

In the anime, Black and Future Zamasu are seen at their cabin on a nearby mountain, waiting patiently for Goku's return to the future. Goku Black and Future Zamasu discuss about killing Goku and how they aren't strong enough as opponents. Future Zamasu says if Goku Black kills Goku too quickly, he'd lose an opportunity to grow stronger by adapting to his fighting style and insists that Black should wish for immortality, but Black refuses, stating that he was already satisfied having Goku's body and because of having Goku's cells running inside him, couldn't help but wanting to become stronger on his own.

Upon sensing the return of the trio (Trunks, Goku and Vegeta, along with Bulma) in the future, Black and Future Zamasu waited and eventually encountered them again. Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta quickly charges at Black, who entered his Super Saiyan Rosé form. They stopped their exchange of blows for a while and returned to their respective base forms, with Goku assuming that they were right about Zamasu and his plans with the Super Dragon Balls. Black "corrected" Goku and claimed he is Zamasu who switched bodies with Goku with a wish from the Super Dragon Balls but kept his heart and soul intact and killed the Goku in his old body.

The fight continued, with the duo holding the upper hand over the Saiyan trio. When Future Zamasu pins Goku to a building, Goku Black uses his Violent Fierce God Slicer to impale both of them, and Black reveals that this was how he had killed Goku in the past. Then, Black and Future Zamasu revealed to Goku that after Black stole Goku's body, he killed Chi-Chi and Goten in cold blood. This caused Goku's power to rise tremendously, due to his anger, and Goku then began overwhelming both Black and Future Zamasu for a short time, but was ultimately defeated by Black nonetheless. As Goku laid defeated on the ground, Black and Zamasu revealed one of the reasons behind their plans, stating that Trunks was the one to blame, for traveling back and forward through time causing history to change. They declared Trunks a "sinner", because of his actions, causing Trunks to give into his anger completely and access a never-seen before Super Saiyan transformation, and with his newfound power, he declared the end of both Black and Zamasu.

In the manga, Black completely overwhelms Future Trunks during their battle, smashing him from building to building until the latter powers down to base form. Mai tries to retaliate but is easily swept away. He then flies up and prepares to launch another energy blast to finish Trunks off, before he is interrupted by Gowasu, who had his fate changed, thanks to Beerus killing the Zamasu from the main timeline. Black is surprised to see him as he takes Trunks and Mai to his timeline, he too vanishes as well. Black then heads home with Future Zamasu and Zamasu worries about Future Zeno finding out what they are doing to the multiverse. Black then shrugs it off, stating that their plans were noble and righteous.

In the anime, Trunks charges at Black and the two begin fighting. They seemed evenly matched until Zamasu stepped in and the duo begin to overpower Trunks. He doesn't stay down though and tells Vegeta to take Bulma and the injured Goku back to the past so that they can come up with a way to defeat Black and Future Zamasu once and for all, while he stays behind to hold off the duo. Black tries to stop them, but they are protected by Trunks. Black says that they will be back and continues to fight Trunks. Trunks was eventually saved by Future Yajirobe, while Black and Future Zamasu retreated. When Future Mai and some resistance members attacked Black at their cabin, Trunks appeared just in time to save them, and the fight continued, and despite gaining the upper hand early on, Black and Future Zamasu defeated Trunks, and Goku and Vegeta soon returned to the future timeline, with the Evil Containment Wave to seal away Future Zamasu, but Black broke the Mafuba when he destroyed the time machine.

While Vegeta and Goku argue, Gowasu and Shin show up with a Time Ring and confront Black and Zamasu about their actions, but their attempts are in vain. Black affirms that his path was already chosen and says nothing that Gowasu said could change it, and attempted to kill him, but is stopped by Goku and Vegeta. The Kais refuse to leave when asked, wanting to see the battle through. Vegeta requests to take Black, believing that he couldn't be beaten by a fake Goku. Vegeta overwhelms Black, who notices Vegeta's drastically increased strength, which allows him to send him flying. Vegeta then proceeds to give Black a well-deserved thrashing while informing that he could never achieve the full power of a Saiyan by stealing Goku's body. Black questions the difference in power, which Vegeta answers by declaring Black as being nothing but a fake and a thief; Vegeta affirms that he was the Prince of all Saiyans and that he would destroy him.

Black continues to be overwhelmed by Vegeta on the battlefield, noting that Vegeta must have grown stronger due to his anger. Possessing the body of a Saiyan himself, Black decides that he will do the same, and stabs his energy blade into his hand, revealing a new, large scythe variation of it. Black slashes at Vegeta, who dodges it, but the slash creates a large rift in time itself. As Future Zamasu pursues Future Trunks and the others, Vegeta and Goku are held back by the illusionary clones created by the large rift, and Black mocks them as they are surrounded by the clones.

Soon, Black realizes Future Zamasu' flustering energy (Future Zamasu was sealed with the Evil Containment Wave, but the seal could not be complete and managed to escape, but at the cost of a tremendous amount of energy) and uses Instant Transmission to teleport towards Zamasu, with Goku and Vegeta in pursuit. When the two reunite, Future Zamasu admits that their opponents were far stronger than expected and couldn't be underestimated anymore, and informed Black about their "secret weapon". Black and Zamasu then use their Potara earrings and fuse into one, single, powerful warrior known as Fused Zamasu. Fused Zamasu was later erased from existence (along with the entire future multiverse) when Future Zeno erased him after Goku summoned him, putting an end to both Future Zamasu and Black's plans once and for all.

Probably Black. Even if you argue SSG got stronger since then Black still has his adapting ability. I personally don't think Goku and Vegeta got that much stronger.

@takenstew Goku going from being even with Black. To being able to overpower Fused Zamasu. (Zamasu is Black x Zamasu who then "Have their powers strength to infinty) To being able to essentially oneshot him if not for immortality with SSBKK. Zamasu then adapts to this

Then Vegito is able able to match FZ for a time but by the end Zamasu adapts and can outright tank his full power. They diffuse and then base Goku is able to tank a full power punch from FZ and then have enough energy left to significantly amp Trunks. And finally after all that Goku is confident he can destroy Infinite Zamasu if only he had a senzu bean. Which is consistent with post fusion characters getting amps.

So even by the end of the Trunks saga Goku is leagues beyond Black.

Goku is just too powerful for Black at this stage of the manga, but Black is technically still immortal unless that is not accounted here.

Close this thread.

Goku got tens of thousands to over , times stronger throughout top and broke his limits numerous times. Not to mention that SSG is only x weaker than SSB, and SSB Goku was able to contend with Black.

Goku stomps.

This is a mismatch imagine arguing for Black lmao SSGSSKKx10 Goku from the Future Saga would one shot Black at full power (he literally did, actually), and by the Hit Assassination episode he surpassed previous SSGSSKKx10 in just SSGSS and in the ToP surpassed SSGSSKKx20 in UIO1 and from there made Jiren use more power in just SSGSS and surpassed previous SSGSSKKx20, and then had UIO2 and then surpassed UIO2 in SSGSSKKx20 even if you discounted so much else he's still hundreds of times stronger and he only needs to be 50x stronger to surpass SSGSS in SSG Goku literally one shots.

@gelato_exotic: that didn't make any sense but OK, UIO Goku always made Jiren give out more power. And no he did not one shot black, Merged Zamasu wasn't trying on Goku and the "SSGSSKKX10 would one shot Black" is just Hilarious LMFAO, Goku black was>SSB Goku+Vegeta. He was casually toying with them and getting stronger. So you are saying SSGSSKKX10 Goku would one shot SSB Goku+Vegeta?? Thats just nonsense.

Goku black casually bodied enraged SSB Goku, who should be>~SSBKKX10 Goku because as we now rage amps enhance your power more than 5x just like SS2 enraged vegeta vs Beerus who could hurt a suppressed beerus that was one shotting SS3 Goku. And SS2 vegeta was hurting a supressed Beerus, while Goku said even Vegito Wouldn't be able to come close to hurting or beating Beerus, and BASE VEGITO IS X+ (lowballing) stronger than SS3 Goku.

Goku got much stronger however it wasn't to thousands of times stronger. Lets say he got 20 time stronger because him in SSB was able to Match Hit,then let's say he got 50x stronger because just in his SSG Form he was able to fight a Hit level Threat in SSG(even though Hit is SSB level). Let's say he got x stronger,So even if Goku got x stronger, Goku black would still be SSG-SSB level. Because he is >SSB Goku+Vegeta (black Arc). And Vegeta with his God form would be more than x because SS3 was getting one shotted and SSG was keeping up with Beerus. A stronger Beerus.

OT: even if SSG Goku was stronger, Goku black can get Hundreds of times stronger in minutes and would catch up then beat him.

Zamasu

The main protagonist in the Zamasu ark in Dragon Ball Super

Zamasu (ザマス), spelled Zamas in Viz Media's English localization of the Dragon Ball Super manga, is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball series. He is introduced as Goku Black (ゴクウブラック, Gokū Burakku) in the forty-seventh episode of Toei Animation's Dragon Ball Super anime series which first aired on June 12, and in chapter #14 An SOS from the Future!! (未来からのSOS!!, Mirai kara no esuōesu!!) from the manga.

Within the series, Zamasu is originally an apprentice Supreme Kai (界王神, Kaiōshin, lit. "World King God") from Universe In the series' original, unaltered timeline, Zamasu hijacked series protagonist Son Goku's mortal body using the Super Dragon Balls as part of "Project Zero Mortals" (or "Zero Mortals Plan"), his plan to attain supreme power and wipe out all mortal beings. He travels to an alternate future earth and encounters that timeline's version of Trunks, and proceeds to bring humanity to the brink of extinction. To complete his plan, he joins forces with that future timeline's version of Zamasu, who is made indestructible. The character has been positively received and is regarded as one of the best villainous characters of the Dragon Ball franchise.

Creation and design[edit]

Concept art of Goku Black, in base form and in Super Saiyan Rosé form.

Toriyama got the inspiration for Goku Black from characters who are presented as evil "copies" of the hero character in classic tokusatsu programs such as Ultraman, Kamen Rider, and Kamen Rider Black.[2] Toriyama originally devised Zamasu as a character who is on par in single combat with an individual who has attained the Super Saiyan Blue form, whereas other elements such as the retconned time limit of Potara fusions and Zamasu's effective immortality were added to make the fight more interesting.[3] Goku and Vegeta were depicted as struggling against Zamasu in combat due to his tricky nature, as well as their own lack of teamwork.[3] Toei Animation Producer Atsushi Kido said Fused Zamasu is a "cheat" character for his massive strength, and that his one weakness could be that he was originally a single person.[4]

Character[edit]

Zamasu is depicted as a green-skinned humanoid with grey eyes and a white mohawk. He gains Goku's appearance after switching bodies with him, with only slight physical differences. Aside from a single gold and green Potara earring on his left ear, he also wears a Time Ring on his right index finger, which allows him to travel between different timelines at will without the need of a time machine, and also protects him from being erased by temporal paradoxes. After attaining the Super Saiyan Rosé (超サイヤ人 ロゼ, Sūpā Saiya-jin Roze) transformation, his version of the Super Saiyan Blue form (Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan in the manga), Goku Black's hair turns bright pink, due to Zamasu's status as a deity.

After Goku Black merges with his alternate future self via the use of a pair of matching Potara earrings, the result is the even more powerful Fused Zamasu, described as a mixture of incredible power with a deteriorating, yet immortal, body and unhinged mind.[5] The resulting fusion is later revealed to be flawed as Fused Zamasu later degenerates into a grotesque appearance with the right half his body turning into purple sludge. In the anime, this is explained as a result of an unstable and uneven cellular regeneration as the fused being is composed of a mortal and an immortal. In the manga, this form was explained to be a temporary form that Fused Zamasu assumed when he resisted being split apart after the time limit of the Potara fusion passed.

Following the defeat of Fused Zamasu, he transcends into the even more powerful Infinite Zamasu form, though the character's depiction differs considerably between the anime and manga versions. In the anime, Infinite Zamasu is an incorporeal energy being while the manga version is an evolved form of Fused Zamasu, his regeneration ability becoming advanced enough to the point where he is capable of creating seemingly infinite fully grown clones of himself from each cell in his body within seconds, after both composite beings successfully and permanently merged at a cellular level.

Voice actors[edit]

Zamasu is voiced by Shinichiro Miki in Japanese media. David Gray is credited as the English voice actor for the FUNimation.[6] Some sources have speculated that David Gray, along with Sam Majesters who is credited as Zamasu's voice actor in Dragon Ball FighterZ, are in fact the aliases used by American actor James Marsters, who previously played King Piccolo in Dragonball Evolution.[7][8]Sean Schemmel, who voices Goku and Goku Black, claimed in an interview that Funimation wanted to keep Marsters' involvement as a surprise.[9] Marsters has never provided confirmation as to whether he is involved with Dragon Ball Super as the English voice actor for Zamasu.[10][11]

Goku Black shares the same voice actors as Goku in all media. He is voiced by Masako Nozawa in Japanese, and Sean Schemmel in English. Kofi Outlaw from Comicbook.com noted that Schemmel's voice for Goku Black is very different in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and Dragon Ball FighterZ compared to his performance in the FUNimation dub, which was released after the video games.[12] Schemmel indicated that he did not want to copy Nozawa's approach to portray Goku Black; instead, he wanted to emulate the English voice actor for Zamasu as he is supposed to embody the spirit of the same character, who happened to have taken possession of Goku's physical body.[9] Outlaw described his voice in the anime dub to be very similar to his friendly, dulcet tones for Goku, but noted as more sinister and twisted.[12]

Abilities[edit]

Both Goku Black and Zamasu possess several abilities including superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, and energy blasts, utilized by the use of ki. Zamasu and his various incarnations project an energy blade from their hand (神裂斬 (Kami Retsuzan, lit. "God Split Cut")) as their primary form of attack. As Goku Black, Zamasu is capable of growing stronger from near-death experiences due to the host body's Saiyan physiology, and is able to perform most of Goku's abilities, in particular his teleportation skill Shunkan Idō (瞬間移動, lit. "Instantaneous Movement", renamed "Instant Transmission" in FUNimation's dub)[13] as well as a variant of his signature move, the Black Kamehameha (ブラックかめはめ波, Burakku Kamehameha, lit. "Black Turtle Destruction Wave"). As Goku Black, Zamasu has the ability to transform into a pink-haired variant of the Super Saiyan Blue form, Super Saiyan Rosé (超スーパーサイヤ人じんロゼ, Sūpa Saiya-jin Rozētto), after mastering his host body's power. This transformation also enhances his energy control, allowing him to refine his weapon forging skills, from creating a huge sword from his palm, to a long scythe capable of tearing holes in the fabric of space-time, summoning copies of himself.

Later on, both versions of Zamasu merge via Potara earrings, creating an indestructible being who can increase steadily in might. However, due to the conflicting natures of a combined mortal and immortal body, this combined form becomes deformed after taking too much damage, giving Zamasu a deranged, grotesque, monstrous appearance that grew larger in size upon hitting himself with the so-called "Light of Justice".

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Ball Super[edit]

Goku Black first appears in the alternate future timeline where Future Trunks resides as a mysterious entity who is identical in visage to Goku, and refers to himself as such. He kills that timeline's Bulma after she gave her son the means to travel back in time to beseech the aid of Goku and Vegeta, momentarily pursuing him back in time through the Time Capsule's temporal distortion.[14][15][16] Black momentarily engages Goku before being drawn back to the collapsing portal while destroying the time machine, realizing the fight has allowed him to become better accustomed to his new body.[17][18] Goku, Whis and Beerus travel to the Tenth Universe after the two deities sense the similarities between Black and Zamasu, an apprentice of the resident Supreme Kai Gowasu of the Tenth Universe.[19][20] Both the encounter and news of the present timeline's Zamasu inquiring about the Super Dragon Balls and Goku adds further depth to the mystery as Goku, Beerus, Whis, and the Seventh Universe's Supreme Kai stop him from murdering Gowasu with Beerus believing he solved the crisis by completely destroying Zamasu which would negate future versions of himself.[21][22]

By the time the Saiyans reach Trunks's time, they are forced to retreat back to their time after being outmatched by Black in his Super Saiyan Rosé form and the period's version of Zamasu.[23][24] It is later revealed that Black's Time Ring, which he claimed after murdering Gowasu, allows him to survive his past self's demise as he and Zamasu reveal their true origins, triggering Future Trunk's transformation into Super Saiyan Rage by revealing that their actions were made possible by his previous time travel.[25] Zamasu clings onto his fanatical belief of mortals as being inherently evil despite his mentor's attempts to show the good in them, which worsens since his defeat by Goku and his descent into madness as his hatred for mortals extended to the deities allowing them to exist.[26] Upon learning of the Super Dragon Balls prior to killing Gowasu to acquire his Potara Earrings and Time Ring, Zamasu uses the Super Dragon Balls to exchange bodies with Goku before killing him and his family.[27] Later called "Goku Black", he traveled to Future Trunks' timeline where he joins forces with an alternate future version of himself who never encountered Goku and used the Super Dragon Balls to make his mortal body effectively unkillable. The two versions of Zamasu proceed to wipe out the other deities so nothing can interfere in them systematically exterminating all mortal life before reaching the Seventh Universe's Earth, believing that utopia could only be achieved for the multiverse by bringing about the annihilation of humanity and all other mortal beings which he views as corrupt and violent.

Goku Black and Zamasu combat Trunks while Goku and Vegeta return to the past, with Goku learning the Evil Containment Wave while Vegeta trains in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.[28] They two quickly return as the two versions of Zamasu nearly killed Future Trunks.[29] But the failed attempt to seal Future Zamasu by Trunks and Future Mai and Black being defeated by Vegeta causes the pair to realize they have underestimated their enemies, using their Potara Earrings to fuse into Fused Zamasu.[30] Fused Zamasu easily overwhelms everyone,[31] forcing Goku and Vegeta's fusion into Vegito, who is able to match him in strength and even overpower him, before the fusion abruptly ends. Trunks then gains power from every remaining living thing on Earth, generating a Spirit Bomb that he channels into his sword to slice Fused Zamasu in half, destroying his body.[32]

Zamasu survives the death blow and his essence transcends into a more dangerous form known as "Infinite Zamasu". The anime depicts him as an energy being that gradually consumes the future multiverse, while killing off everyone on Earth, save Goku, Vegeta, Bulma, Trunks, Mai, Gowasu, and the Supreme Kai of Universe 7. The manga depicts Infinite Zamasu as the splintered Future Zamasu and Goku Black, each transformed on his own into an enhanced version of Fused Zamasu, as a cellular side-effect of their fusion, with their regenerative powers becoming advanced enough that Vegeta unintentionally created an army of Infinite Zamasus that overwhelms the heroes. Both versions of the story result in Goku summoning the alternate future's version of Zeno, who expresses disgust towards Infinite Zamasu and completely wipes him out by erasing the entire multiverse of the alternate future timeline. Whis later goes to the new alternate timeline he intends to send Trunks and Mai to warn that timeline's Beerus of Zamasu's intentions, thus making sure his plans never come to be.[33]

In Toriyama's films and in other media[edit]

Goku Black briefly appears in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' - 'Future Trunks Special Edition' and attempts to kill Trunks, but was stopped by Mai's intervention. This takes place before his debut in Dragon Ball Super.

An event called the Dragon Ball Tenkaichi Budosai , which ran from August 10, to August 27, was held in the Sunshine City building complex in Ikebukuro, Tokyo.[34] The free-entry event was based on the Dragon Ball Super, with Zamasu and Goku Black being the central antagonists. The venue was divided into several areas, with the mystery-solving event titled “Beat the Merged Zamasu!”.[34]

Zamasu appears as a cybernetic version of his Fused Zamasu form in Super Dragon Ball Heroes, a promotional anime for the Dragon Ball Heroestrading cardarcade game. He was brought back by Fu, and is recruited by Hearts alongside four other dangerous criminals from the Prison Planet, as part of their plot to obtain the Universe Seed and destroy all the deities.[35] They eventually succeed in completing the Universe Seed, which Hearts absorbs to acquire his Godslayer form, but immediately afterward, Godslayer Hearts turns on Zamasu, erasing him from existence, as he wishes to terminate all deities, regardless of their affiliation.[36] Later in the series, another alternate timeline version of Zamasu appears in his Goku Black guise. This version of Zamasu had his history altered, after Fu told him about his future. This incarnation of Goku Black killed 99 alternate timeline Gokus and also attempted to complete Project Zero Mortals,[37] obtaining the Super Saiyan Rosé 2 and 3 transformations in the process,[38][39] before he was finally finished by Gogeta in his Super Saiyan Blue Evolved form.[39]

Goku Black is a playable DLC character in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 as a pre-order bonus, while Zamasu and Goku Black (Super Saiyan Rosé) are playable characters in the Pack 3 DLC, and Fused Zamasu is playable in the Pack 4 DLC. They also appear in Dragon Ball Fusions. Goku Black in his Super Saiyan Rosé form is available as part of the base roster for the fighting game Dragon Ball FighterZ, while Fused Zamasu is later added for purchase as part of FighterZ Pass 2.

Reception[edit]

Various sources have speculated on Goku Black's origins prior to the revelation of his true identity.[40][41][42] The character has received a positive reception, particularly after the full reveal of his backstory and motivations. The Goku Black incarnation of the character is particularly popular, placing fourth by fan vote in a poll of Dragon Ball antagonists published by the March issue of V Jump.[43]

Kotaku staff praised the design of Goku Black's hair, and consider Zamasu and his incarnations to be "easily some of the best villains in Dragon Ball history".[44][45] Jay Gibbs from ComicsVerse formed the view that Zamasu is the greatest Dragon Ball villain of all time.[46] Gibbs opined that Zamasu smartly planned ahead and exploited the most overpowered elements of the series that its own protagonists had ease of access to, such as Saiyan powers and the Dragon Balls, and argued that he didn't really lose in the traditional sense since an entire timeline and all life in it had to be erased by Zeno in the process.[46] Nick Valdez from Comicbook.com thought Zamasu's elitism, which sees the character falling from grace through an initially noble idea, and his Goku Black persona helped him stand out over previous villains in the franchise.[47] Joseph Ocasio from CBR ranked Goku Black and Zamasu as the best characters introduced in the Dragon Ball Super series and drew a comparison to Marvel Cinematic Universe character Thanos, a self-righteous "hero" who attempts to bring balance to the universe by getting rid of those he perceives the impure or unworthy.[48] Stefan Sgarioto from Madman Entertainment ranked Goku Black the sixth most memorable villain of the Dragon Ball series and praised the design of his Super Saiyan Rosé form.[49] Simon Alvarez from The Inquisitr praised the fight between Vegito and Fused Zamasu and considered it one of the best animated battle sequences in the Dragon Ball Super series.[50] Shawn Sharis from IGN considers the final blow delivered to Zamasu by Trunks to be one of the greatest moments in Dragon Ball Super.[51]

Schemmel's performance as Goku Black has been praised by series fans. Valdez noted that it differs from Nozawa's performance in the original Japanese version, and that Schemmel has twisted his Goku voice to frame the character in a "destructive and disturbing light."[52]
