Scarlett fever: why Black Widow has sparked a trend for red hair

If you happen to see an unusually large number of women with red hair today, do not be alarmed. We haven’t been invaded by vikings again, nor is there a Nicola from Girls Aloud convention happening in your vicinity. There is a perfectly reasonable explanation for the sudden outbreak of redheads, and it is that Black Widow was recently released.

According to the website Justmylook, there has been a 163% spike in demand for the colour since the release of Black Widow, presumably because lots of people sat through two hours and 14 minutes of a film about a woman grappling with the psychological torment of knowing she was part of a Soviet military programme that brainwashed, sterilised and murdered hundreds of abandoned girls, only to think: “Ooh, I bet I’d look lovely with her hair.”

In truth, that’s the extent of this news story. There was a film, people saw the film, then they copied a haircut from the film. That’s it. But it’s weird that this never happened with any previous Marvel films, isn’t it? It’s weird nobody sent out a press release telling us that people were so inspired by The Incredible Hulk that sales of ragged purple trousers shot up by 1,000% in the weeks after its release. It’s strange that there wasn’t a noticeable uptick in the number of men with fussy little goatee beards shortly after Iron Man came out. It’s odd that, in the immediate aftermath of Ant-Man, we weren’t deluged with stories about people stripping the shelves of whatever nondescript clothes Paul Rudd happens to wear in that film.

What could possibly be different about Black Widow? It could be that audiences are relieved Natasha Romanoff has nice hair in this film, because it is set before the events of Avengers: Endgame, wherein half of the planet’s hairdressers were snapped into dust by a vengeful bald alien. It could be because we know Romanoff perishes in search of the Soul Stone, and people are adopting her hair as a way of preserving her legacy. Then again, maybe it could be something else.

There’s a great compilation video on YouTube in which Scarlett Johansson suffers through question after insulting question posed to her by journalists about Black Widow’s appearance. Her co-stars are asked about stunts and character motivation, and she is asked what food she had to eat to get in shape. How does it feel to be a sex symbol? What are Black Widow’s key fashion elements? Does she wear knickers under her jumpsuit? Perhaps this latest news, that the main thing audiences are taking from Black Widow is her lovely shiny hair, is an extension of that same trend.

Maybe we need to explore this further. Have people tracked down the brand of makeup Johansson wore in the scene where she falls off a roof and bashes her body into an agonising state of disrepair? Have sales of photogenic yet utterly impractical leather jumpsuits shot up as well, along with a corresponding surge in talcum powder? Are more and more women having their necks surgically dislocated so they can pose for photos while simultaneously displaying their bum, boobs and face like Black Widow did in that first Avengers poster?

There’s a chance I’m overthinking this. Then again, there’s a chance I’m really not. Still, regardless of how it shows Hollywood’s endemic sexism, at least we all know that 163% more people have dyed red hair than before Black Widow came out. That’s something, right?

Black Widow's hair color in the new 'Avengers: Endgame' trailer could be a hint at a potential time jump

  • Marvel's latest trailer for "Avengers: Endgame" shows Black Widow (played by Scarlett Johansson) with a variety of hairstyles.
  • The change from her blonde bob to longer, reddish hair might indicate we'll see a forward time jump in the coming movie.
  • It's even possible we'll see the Avengers travel backwards in time while on their mission to undo the wipe out of 50% of all living things in the universe.

Black Widow's hairstyles have been in constant flux over the course of Marvel's series of movies. In "Avengers: Infinity War," Black Widow (aka Natasha Romanoff) ditched the signature red for a short, blonde bob as a way to stay undercover.

But now the newest "Avengers: Endgame" trailer shows Black Widow with longer locks and her natural red hue. This could be a clear signal that the coming movie will take place over a longer period of time than previously assumed.

Warning: Minor spoilers ahead for "Captain Marvel."

Black Widow's scenes with short blonde hair take place in the immediate aftermath of "Infinity War"

The first post-credits scene in "Captain Marvel" showed Black Widow along with Captain America, Rhodey, and Bruce Banner. They seem to be assessing the massive number of people Thanos snapped out of existence, and then Captain Marvel shows up.

Black Widow still has her short blonde bob in that "Captain Marvel" post-credits scene. That hairstyle also shows up in the "Avengers: Endgame" trailer when Captain Marvel meets Thor for the first time.

So we can assume those two scenes happen pretty early on in "Endgame."

Then her hair gets longer and the natural red grows in

Throughout the "Endgame" trailer, Black Widow's hair changes about five times. The first and most notable new look shows her with longer red hair and blonde tips. This is seen within the first minute of the new trailer, when we hear Captain America speaking.

"I keep telling everybody they should move on," Captain America says.

"Some do, but not us," he continues.

The trailer cuts to Black Widow sitting across from Cap, indicating he is speaking to her.

Since Black Widow's hair seems to have had time to grow naturally, this seems to signal a long stretch of time between the end of "Infinity War" and the point in "Endgame" when the Avengers manage to rally a plan.

Black Widow's red locks are present for the shot when it looks like the remaining Avengers (including Nebula and Tony Stark, safely back on Earth) are suited up and heading out for a fight.

Black Widow's shifting hairstyles could also be a sign of time travel

We know it's possible "Avengers: Endgame" will involve some level of time-travel, perhaps as our surviving heroes try to figure out a way to go back to prevent Thanos from ever acquiring all of the infinity stones.

Regardless of timeline trickery, the new trailer definitively tells us Black Widow's cropped blonde look was only ever a temporary tactic for staying undercover. It looks like the real Natasha Romanoff is coming for Thanos, along with the remaining Avengers who will do "whatever it takes" to defeat Thanos and bring back the dusted dead.

Black Widow's Latest Victory? A Surging Popularity in Red Hair Dye

The release of Marvel Studios' Black Widow has reportedly led to a surge in searches and purchases of red hair dye by those who'd like to look more like the eponymous superhero.

According to Google data collected by United Kingdom-based beauty retailer Justmylook, the red locks rocked by Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff in the latest solo Marvel Cinematic Universe film have allegedly caused a 163 percent spike in demand for the hair color since the film's release in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access on July 9.

Notable interest in red hair dye first spiked early this year, thanks to a popular TikTok trend that involved users dyeing their hair a vibrant red from a dark color in one sitting by using L'Oréal HiColor. Searches for HiColor have increased 150 percent over the last two weeks. This is noteworthy, as HiColor searches had seen a steady decline since aforementioned trend peaked around February/March.

In addition to sharing its findings about the red hair dye trend, Justmylook compiled a list of tips to keep your new red hair both fierce and fresh:

1. Wash your hair LESS: Red color molecules tend to be larger than other color molecules. As such, they struggle to penetrate the hair shaft, and wash away much easier. Washing your hair less will prolong the life of your red color, and is also protects your hair from overwashing.

2. Wash with COLD water: Using hot water allows your hair cuticle to swell up and causing the color to escape, which will leave you with a faded, brassy red color.

3. Switch to COLOR-SAFE products: When washing your hair, make sure you're using products designed to help your color last. These products typically avoid ingredients such as sulfates and parabens, which can cause damage.

4. PROTECT your color from UV rays: Similar to how the sun damages your skin, UV rays can also damage your hair. Avoid having the sun wash out your color by using a UV blocker or wearing a hat.

5. Condition, condition, CONDITION: Using a leave-in conditioner is the perfect way to protect your hair from chlorine by creating a moisturizing barrier.

Since making her MCU debut in 2010's Iron Man 2, Johansson's character has appeared on-screen with various shades of red hair. She also had a brief stint with blonde hair in Avengers: Infinity War, not to mention a red and blonde ombré in Avengers: Endgame.

Hollywood has been inspiring fashion and beauty for decades. From Mia Farrow’s pixie cut to Rachel from Friends’ bob, women follow style and beauty trends set by celebrities. Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow has started a hair trend. According to UK beauty retailer JustMyLook, since Black Widow was released two weeks ago, there has been a 163% increase in demand for red hair dye. Below are a few more details about the summer color trend:

According to the website Justmylook, there has been a 163% spike in demand for the colour since the release of Black Widow, presumably because lots of people sat through two hours and 14 minutes of a film about a woman grappling with the psychological torment of knowing she was part of a Soviet military programme that brainwashed, sterilised and murdered hundreds of abandoned girls, only to think: “Ooh, I bet I’d look lovely with her hair.”

[From The Guardian]

The hairstyles in Black Widow were also practical, unlike what we usually see on superhero women. One of my favorite parts of Black Widow was when Yelena, played by Florence Pugh, was teasing Natasha about her hair flip and super hero pose. It really was ridiculous. Hollywood doesn’t know how to have a strong female lead without sexualizing her and making her into a love-besotted damsel like Wonder Woman. The Natasha in Black Widow had definitely matured and gotten over herself. She wasn’t hyper intent on proving a point or being sexy while kicking ass. Natasha just was. This is why I am excited that women are just now catching “scarlet fever” and wanting to dye their hair red. This says something about what women find not only attractive but inspiring. I feel Hollywood and in particular Marvel should take note.

I am so happy to see the gingers getting some love. Red hair is one of my favorite hair colors. Especially the deep rich auburn kind. It looks good on many different skin tones and I wish more people would opt for scarlet over blonde. It is awesome to see that red hair is trending in the UK as well. In the meantime, I look forward to seeing all the red heads coming out this summer. I don’t care that probably 90% of them will be bottled gingers.

The Avengers BLACK WIDOW inspired Hair Color

Being one of the lucky few to survive Thanos' snap, Black Widow (played by Scarlett Johansson) returns in Avengers: Endgame to hopefully save the day alongside the remaining superheroes. And while a lot happens in Marvel's cinematic finale, including a Captain Marvel haircut, what's obvious from the beginning is that Black Widow (otherwise known as Natasha Romanoff) undergoes yet another physical transformation.

For the last decade, Marvel fans have spent a lot of time debating Black Widow's on-screen look — some have even gone as far as ranking her best and worst wigs. And while this is an exhausted critique (seriously, has anyone talked so much about Thor's former lob?), Black Widow's hairstyle evolution hides something crucial to the Avengers: Endgame plot.

Whether you've only seen the trailer or managed to sit through the three-hour film, it's immediately clear that Black Widow returns to her roots for the Avengers' swan song. But why? After rocking a blonde bob in Avengers: Infinity War, the signature red hair makes a comeback thanks to the massive time jump that's central to Endgame's plot.

Lucky for you, that's all the spoilers you can get — for now. Until then, it's time to revisit all of Black Widow's iconic looks over the last decade because, let's face it, we're all feeling a little nostalgic with the Marvel series coming to a close. Plus, the fate of that rumored Black Widow prequel is as elusive as the ending of Avengers: Endgame.

Thanks to Black Widow, Copper Is the Next Huge Hair Color Trend For Fall

Copper has always been a gorgeous hair color shade, but thanks to Marvel's latest release Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson, it's seeing a major revival this fall. There's no denying that Natasha Romanoff's red hair looks amazing in the blockbuster, but we had no idea her vibrant hue would influence so many people to join the redhead club. Shortly after the movie hit theaters, Google searches for "copper hair" spiked.

This copper shade is similar to the "tiger daylily" hair color trend that was popular in the spring, except it's just a bit richer and more orange-red. Your hairstylist can help you ensure you have the perfect shade, adjusting the vibrancy as needed and even taking it to an ashy copper hair color shade if it suits you. The best part of this hair trend is that it's a great choice for those with darker hair. Unlike some lighter hair color trends, this one is less likely to involve heavy bleaching and therefore won't be as damaging to your hair.

Get inspired to transform into your own version of Black Widow with more copper red hair ideas ahead.
