Overview

The Audi Q5 applies the brand's luxury pedigree to the compact-crossover template with lukewarm results. Its cabin boasts impeccable build quality and upscale features, but its passenger space and cargo capacity are unremarkable for this class. Every Q5 is motivated by a potent and efficient turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a dutiful automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Despite a responsive powertrain, the Q5 isn't quite as exciting to drive as rivals such as the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and the Porsche Macan. Still, the Audi provides a refined ride and tranquil interior. While the best technology is reserved for the most expensive models, the Q5 promotes a stately image and delivers a posh driving experience.

What's New for ?

The Audi Q5 gets rejiggered standard equipment and updated option packages. The entry-level Premium adds revised inch wheels and standard automatic high-beam headlights. The new Convenience Plus package includes wireless charging, front and rear parking sensors, and newly designed inch wheels. Likewise, the next-level Q5 Premium Plus receives redesigned inch wheels and now adds the Driver Assistance package. It includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology as well as lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist. A newly available plug-in hybrid model brings better fuel economy, more power, and quicker acceleration.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The Audi Q5 starts at just over $44,, but prices significantly jump between the different models and the plug-in-hybrid powertrain. We think the mid-level Premium Plus model is the best value, with an added dose of standard luxury features versus the base Premium. The upgrades include a slick digital gauge cluster, enhanced infotainment system, larger inch wheels, panoramic sunroof, and more. While there are multiple interior colors and cabin accents to choose, there are only a handful of options. We'd skip the $ Warm Weather package's ventilated front sport seats and the $ Black Optic pack's inch wheels and dark exterior trim. Instead, we'd select the $ Cold Weather kit that brings all-weather floor mats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Q5 features a standard hp turbocharged four-cylinder, a seven-speed automatic transmission, and Quattro all-wheel drive. The turbo four provides plenty of punch to scoot the Q5 around town or blast down a highway on-ramp, and it is smooth, quiet, and mellifluous. The plug-in-hybrid variant adds an electric motor that increases output to a combined horses and lb-ft of torque, which Audi claims will improve acceleration. The luxury compact crossover's suspension is well damped and imparts a stable feeling no matter the road or driving condition. The ride is smooth and controlled—with or without the optional adaptive suspension—even over pockmarked asphalt. The steering is accurate and lightly weighted but provides no discernible feedback from the front wheels. In the Dynamic drive mode, the steering feels heftier but still artificial. Pitch the Q5 down a twisty two-lane and it'll handle it with aplomb, but a Porsche Macan will still show you a better time.

Audi

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA estimates the regular Q5 will earn 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The plug-in hybrid is rated at 25 mpg city and 29 highway, with a combined gas-electric rating of 65 MPGe. Its kWh battery pack also allows an EPA-rated 20 miles of pure-electric driving range. In our real-world fuel-economy testing, the gas-only Q5 missed its government highway estimate by 1 mpg with a mpg result but still did better than the Cadillac XT5.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Q5 provides enough room for four adults to get comfy and offers plenty of upscale features, even on the base Premium model. The cabin is both quiet at speed and easy to get in and out of. Moving up through the three trim levels—Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige—nets even more luxury features, including Audi's slick Virtual Cockpit digital gauge cluster. When it came to seeing how many of our carry-on cargo boxes fit, the Q5 didn't impress. It beat the smaller Macan, but only just and held 18 cases with the rear seats folded. The Q5's rear seatbacks easily fold in a 40/20/40 fashion, however, providing flexibility that the Lexus RX doesn't have.

Audi

Infotainment and Connectivity

Buyers of even the least expensive Q5 will enjoy an intuitive infotainment system displayed in a dashtop inch screen; an inch unit is optional. Most of the expected infotainment features are present and accounted for in the base Q5, including a Wi-Fi hotspot and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Things get much more interesting if you add the optional navigation system, as it comes with a reconfigurable digital gauge cluster that Audi calls Virtual Cockpit. It provides a wide, inch view of the nav map plus selected media, phone controls, trip computer, speed, and tachometer, or a combination of these.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Audi Q5 earned a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), but it wasn't named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Q5 also offers standard driver-assistance technology such as automated emergency braking and forward-collision warning, and other assists are available on the pricier models. Key safety features include:

  • Available blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
  • Available adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Audi's warranty coverage for the Q5 is average, and many rivals offer longer coverage periods. Buyers of brand-new Q5 models can take advantage of a free service for their first scheduled maintenance visit at 10, miles.

  • Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50, miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50, miles
  • Complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for 1 year or 10, miles

Overall Score: 8/10

Safety Features: 8/10

audi-q5-safety-image

The Audi Q5 scored well in crash tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It earned Good ratings in each crashworthiness category and top Superior ratings with both its standard and optional front crash prevention tech.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rated the Q5 five stars overall, including five stars each for front and side crash test safety. Rollover resistance was rated four stars.

In addition to the standard automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning, available driver assistance equipment includes parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, vehicle exit warning system, adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist, and a degree camera.

Value: 8/10

audi-q5-value-image

Though it has a price tag that checks in at over $43, to start, the Q5 can still be considered a good value. That's because of Audi's equipment packaging. The base model comes well equipped with many high-end features, such as a power liftgate, tri-zone climate controls, a 7-inch infotainment display, a panoramic moonroof, and more. Many of the Q5's rivals charge extra for some or all of these features.

Top-end Q5 models can be quite expensive, especially compared to non-premium crossovers, but they are loaded with desirable features not available on some models. The Prestige trim comes with a speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, a navigation system, a head-up display, among other lavish features. Unlike some of its premium counterparts, the Audi is available with a series of added cost options packages that can quickly drive its price.

Tech Features: 8/10

audi-q5-tech-image

The Q5 comes with Audi's MMI infotainment system and a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth, and a seven-inch driver display. Available features include an inch infotainment touchscreen, LED headlights, built-in navigation, satellite radio, and connected app capabilities.

Audi's Virtual Cockpit is truly a sight to behold. Beyond the essential functions that many drivers are used to seeing, such as a speedometer and tachometer, the digital cockpit opens up the ability to view navigation and other pertinent information right in the instrument cluster. Combined with the infotainment screen, this feature can almost deliver information overload, but it can also help keep the driver on course and eyes on the road more.

Practicality: 8/10

audi-q5-practicality-image

Behind the back seats, the Q5 offers cubic feet of cargo space. That's less than most of its competition, but split-folding rear bench opens the space up quite a bit to cubic feet.

Audi scattered thoughtful small-item storage spaces throughout the Q5's cabin. There are tons of bins and small cubby spaces to store keys, change, wallets, and electronic devices. The Q5's door pockets are decent, but the front cupholders are awkwardly positioned, which can make it hard to reach around tall cups to reach the infotainment display.

Styling & Design: 8/10

audi-q5-styling-image

The Q5 features sweeping styling that gives it a sleek look with a trademark Audi clamshell tailgate and more than a passing resemblance to the company's other SUVs.

Inside, the Q5's controls and displays are laid out intuitively. There's little happening in the dash that can't be seen and touched by either front passenger, which makes the crossover more driver-focused. The front seats are exceptionally comfortable, and both rows feature generous head and leg room. Outward visibility is decent, though large D-pillars obstruct the view and create larger-than-necessary blind spots.

Driving Experience: 7/10

audi-q5-driving-image

The Q5 can hustle to 60 mph from a standstill in around 6 seconds, quick for an SUV of this type. The hybrid powertrain feels even more lively than that, thanks to more low-down torque, and standard AWD creates better traction on slick surfaces.

But despite its sporty leanings, the Q5's steering feel is numb and doesn't communicate much about what's happening with the front wheels. Selectable driving modes help tighten things up considerably. They can change the steering weight and throttle response.

Fuel Efficiency: 8/10

audi-q5-fuel-image

With the standard gasoline powertrain, the Audi Q5 is rated at 22 mpg city, 28 highway, and 24 mpg combined. The Q5 TFSIe plug-in hybrid received EPA-estimated gas mileage ratings of 27 mpg combined and up to 65 MPGe, the equivalent of efficiency while in electric-only mode.

The Q5's fuel economy numbers are just behind the BMW X3 and are on par with what is seen from the Volvo XC60 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. And all four of these vehicles are also available as plug-in hybrids with similar efficiency.

  • Audi's Q5 SUV and A8 sedan get performance and efficiency gains from the addition of a plug-in powertrain option.
  • Sure, zero-tomph times will be better, but it's the fuel-economy benefits that stand out here. The standard Q5 gets 18 mpg, while the PHEV more than triples that to 65 MPGe.
  • Thanks to tax credits, you might only pay $ more to plug in your new Audi.

It's not a surprise that you're going to pay more for a plug-in-hybrid variant of the Audi A8 or Q5, but you'll also be getting more. For an extra $10,—or maybe much less, after tax credits—Audi promises more efficiency, more performance, and more exterior paint choices.

Let's start with the popular Q5 SUV, which finally gets an electric boost that will unsurprisingly offer more efficient driving, what with its EPA-estimated 20 miles of range and 65 MPGe once the kWh battery's all-electric range is depleted. If you're driving the gas-only Q8, you're looking at getting just 18 miles per gallon (combined).

The Q5 PHEV also gets what should be a noticeable acceleration boost, going from zero to 60 mph in seconds, nearly a second faster than the non-electrified Q5. That's because, even though the PHEV and the standard Q5 share Audi's turbocharged liter four-cylinder TFSI engine, the plug-in hybrid adds an electric motor to the powertrain between the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission and the engine for a total power output of horsepower and lb-ft of torque. Compare that to the decent, but now less interesting, hp and lb-ft of torque in the gas-only model.

Audi

Both versions come with Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive and look similar enough that you'll probably have to check the badges to see which version you're looking at, unless their exterior paint is Turbo Blue or Daytona Gray, as those colors are exclusive to the PHEV (and, just to keep you on your toes, the SQ5).

Audi

The plug-in-hybrid versions of the Q5 will start at $53, for the Premium trim, almost $10, more than the Premium trim for the non-PHEV Q5, which starts at $44, Higher trims of the plug-in-hybrid Q5 include the Premium Plus, which costs $57,, and the Prestige, which is priced at $61, Audi says that it expects Q5 TFSI e buyers will be eligible for the federal electric-vehicle tax credit of up to $

Audi

A8 Plug-In Hybrid

Moving over to the sedan, Audi finally brings all of this plug-in-hybrid goodness to the new A8, too, including the kWh battery, which in the A8 is good for an EPA-estimated electric range of 17 miles and 54 MPGe. The gasoline-powered A8 gets just 21 mpg combined. From the outside, the A8 TFSI e looks like the gas model but with a unique light signature in the front bumper.

The PHEV uses the same turbocharged liter V-6 engine found in the A8 L 55 TFSI model, but instead of the horsepower and lb-ft of torque available from the gas-only powertrain, the PHEV offers up hp and lb-ft of torque. That compares favorably to the other gas-powered A8 Audi sells in the U.S., which comes with a liter TFSI V-8 and produces hp and lb-ft of torque. Stop us if you've heard this part before, but the plug-in model runs up from zero to 60 mph in seconds, or almost a second faster than the standard A8 V It's also comfortably close to the time Audi promises for the V-8 model.

In keeping with the price premium of $10, or so for the plug-in-hybrid powertrain, the A8 60 TFSI e starts at $94,, while the non-PHEV A8 can be had for $86, The gas-powered A8 V-8 starts at $97, As for the federal plug-in vehicle tax benefits for the A8, Audi says eligible buyers can expect a federal credit of up to $, or a total increased cost of just over $

Gas Mileage on the Audi Q5

I was forced to swallow them. Katya used my tongue to stimulate the vagina, and my nose for the clitoris. This went on for about ten minutes, after which she pressed her weight on me, and I lay down on the floor, and the rider herself, legs apart, began to. Press with even greater force on my face.
