2013 Jeep Patriot transmission fluid light

You must be referring to the transmission temperature warning light, this indicates that the transmission is overheating, the owners manual states that you should stop driving and allow the transmission to cool or risk damage to the transmission. There may be a problem with the transmission cooler, hopefully the transmission hasn’t been damaged by the overheating episodes.

This is from the owners manual;

This light indicates that the transmission fluid
temperature is running hot. This may occur
with severe usage, such as trailer towing. If this
light turns on, safely pull over and stop them
vehicle. Then, shift the transmission into NEUTRAL and
run the engine at idle or faster until the light turns off.

Continuous driving with the Transmission Temperature
Warning Light illuminated will eventually cause
severe transmission damage or transmission failure.

Jeep CVT trans fluid change

Be careful. A co-worker had a Jeep Compass w/CVT that was coming up on 60k service. He took it to a local shop (quick service type place) and asked all the right questions. Yes, they understood it was a CVT; yes, they had the correct fluid; yes, they had done these before. So they performed the service.

18 miles later, he was sitting on the side of the road with a Jeep Compass that would not move in forward or reverse. Local Chrysler/Jeep dealer service department confirmed the CVT was trashed. To the credit of the quick service place, they footed the bill for a new replacement by the dealer, to the tune of just shy of $6k.

This is not hearsay or "a friend of a friend...", happened to a coworker whose desk was 20 ft. from mine at the time. We also have a CVT (Ford Five Hundred AWD). No one but a Ford dealer tech that is trained to work on that transmission services it. So far, at 190k miles, 60k fluid/filter changes is all it has required.

I'm not saying "don't do it", I'm saying be damn careful if you do.

Use a spanner or a retched with the correct size head. After oil came up screw the drain plug back with a new gasket. Then refill the transmission with new transmission oil.
