Electrophysiology
What is electrophysiology?
Electrophysiology is a subspecialty of cardiology that deals with heart rhythm disorders, which result from problems with your heart’s electrical system.
Pumping blood is a complex process that requires different parts of your heart to work together. Your heart doesn’t pump blood by itself; your heart’s electrical system sends signals to regulate the process. When this system doesn’t work properly, your heart beats too quickly, too slowly, or irregularly.
If you have a heart rhythm disorder, a cardiologist with training in electrophysiology like Dr. Helmy is best suited to treat it. As an electrophysiologist, Dr. Helmy performs specialized tests to diagnose arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), including electrophysiology studies, which map the electrical activity in your heart. He treats arrhythmias using procedures such as catheter ablation and implanted devices like pacemakers.
Not all arrhythmias are medically serious, but they’re more likely to affect people with heart disease, and others have serious complications, such as stroke. Other arrhythmias put you at risk for sudden cardiac arrest, which is when your heart abruptly stops working. If you’re concerned about your heartbeat, schedule an appointment with Dr. Helmy today.
What conditions does an electrophysiologist treat?
As an electrophysiologist, Dr. Helmy is equipped to diagnose and treat arrhythmias including:
Atrial Fibrillation (AFib)
In AFib, the upper chambers of the heart are out of sync with the lower chambers, causing a quivering or fluttering heartbeat. If untreated, AFib raises your chances of having a stroke.
Tachycardia
A tachycardia is a heartbeat that’s too fast (more than beats per minute). If you have a ventricular tachycardia, affecting your heart’s lower chambers, your heart may not be able to pump enough blood into your body, which can be fatal.
Bradycardia
A bradycardia is a heartbeat that’s too slow (fewer than 60 beats per minute). Bradycardia isn’t necessarily a problem. However, some people who have it don’t receive enough oxygen, leading to symptoms like fatigue, lightheadedness, and fainting.
Long QT Syndrome
Long QT syndrome can trigger rapid, erratic heartbeats. The rapid heartbeats can lead to fainting, seizures, and occasionally sudden death.
Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) Syndrome
WPW is when your heart has an extra electrical pathway, which results in episodes of tachycardia.
In some cases, an arrhythmia may result from external factors such as caffeine intake or certain prescription medications. As an electrophysiologist, Dr. Helmy helps you get to the root of your irregular heartbeat to discover the best treatment option for you.
How does electrophysiology treat arrhythmias?
Electrophysiology helps treat arrhythmias by revealing the source of the irregular heartbeat. Through his diagnostic methods, Dr. Helmy figures out which treatment option is best for your case. Treatments for arrhythmias include:
Medication
Dr. Helmy may prescribe prescription medications to regulate your heart rhythm and reduce the risk of blood clots, a common complication of certain arrhythmias, especially AFib.
Catheter ablation
Dr. Helmy performs this minimally invasive procedure by scarring tiny portions of heart tissue responsible for triggering abnormal electrical impulses, leaving healthy heart tissue intact.
Implanted devices
Dr. Helmy can implant devices into your body to reset and control your heart rhythm. If your heart beats too slowly, he may recommend a pacemaker, which sends electrical impulses to keep your heart beating regularly. If your heart beats too quickly, he may recommend an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), which resets your heartbeat when it becomes dangerously rapid or irregular.

Hollywoods Top Doctors: Best Cardiologists in Los Angeles
A version of this story first appeared in the Sept. 19 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.
Hollywood is a town obsessed with its health — and its vanity. So it’s no surprise that everyone has an opinion on who the best doctors in Los Angeles are, from who can keep aging at bay for those all-important close-ups to whom to count on to cure life-threatening illnesses.
To identify the elite physicians who qualified for The Hollywood Reporter’s inaugural list of the top docs in L.A., THR’s editors went two routes. First, THR partnered with the physician-led research team of Castle Connolly, the U.S. preeminent medical-database authority, to identify the highest-rated practitioners in their specialties, all of whom are nominated by their peers in an extensive survey process of thousands of U.S. doctors each year. Castle Connolly screens these doctors’ medical educations, training, hospital appointments, disciplinary histories and much more. Doctors do not and cannot pay to be included.
THR then went further and surveyed professionals in the film, television, movie and media fields to find out who among these doctors are the most beloved, trusted and go-to physicians in L.A. These 43 industry favorites include Morgan Freemans holistic internist Dr. Soram Khalsa,Dr. Mehmet Ozs gastroenterologistDr. Jonathan LaPook, Naomi Watts NYC dermatologist David Colbert, KISS Paul Stanleys ear, nose and throat doctor Joe Sugerman, Steve Tischs favorite neurosurgeon and Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the orthopedist who healed Charlize Therons herniated disc and Dr. Robert Kay, the surgeon who fixed Starz CEO Chris Albrechts daughter Tess after a car accident.

? Dr. Urman and Dr. Caren have practiced together for 20 years (“I’ve been with Dr. Caren almost as long as with my wife,” Urman jokes) and they focus on preventative medicine for heart health, from electrocardiograms and ultrasounds to diet and stress advice. The diet most patients opt for is a fish- and legume-based Mediterranean diet that’s “easy to enjoy” thanks to the city’s farmers’ markets, Urman says. He insists that their Hollywood patients are no higher-strung than average — “You’ve got your high-stress, high-anxiety people, and you’ve got your people who are balanced,” he says — and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to decompressing. “It could be reading a book or taking a romantic walk with your spouse or partner,” says Urman. “It could be learning to turn your cell phone off.”

? After Saturday Night Live veteran Dana Carveys shocking heart attack at age 42 and his botched bypass surgery (for which he sued for malpractice), Dr. Shah performed Carveys fourth angioplasty, which was a success. Theyve worked together as doctor-patient and friends ever since. I dont like being scolded, says Carvey. I found P.K.s scientific approach very pragmatic, very logical and calming. Adds Shah: You want to be a partner in their care, not an adversary. He does have one stern parting word, though lithe Hollywood actors might not need this advice: Exercise! Exercise!

Welcome - Donna Gallik, M.D. - Heart Rhythm Specialist Los Angeles, CA
Welcome to our electrophysiology practice and website! Our practice is devoted to the care of patients with cardiac arrhythmias, abnormal heart rhythms. In our office, we treat a variety of patients, from those bothered by occasional irregular heart beats or palpitations, to those who have been resuscitated from cardiac arrest. Young or old, minor or major illness, our office staff, consisting of two capable front office assistants and one medical technical assistant is dedicated to providing superior care to our patients.
Our goal is to provide comprehensive, state-of-the art medical care in a small practice setting, which is conducive to compassionate, individualized care for arrhythmia patients. Many procedures are performed in the office, such as Holter and event monitoring, pacemaker and defibrillator evaluation, stress testing and echocardiography. For patients needing invasive procedures (described in detail on the following pages), these are performed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and St. John’s Medical Center. Both of these hospitals have excellent facilities for performance of complex arrhythmia procedures. For patients who live outside of the west Los Angeles area, an outreach program to provide electrophysiology service to patients in the Antelope Valley has also been initiated.
