The Royal Guard Set is a recurring Armor Set in The Legend of Zelda series.[1]

Location and Uses

Breath of the Wild

The Royal Guard Set is exclusive to The Champions' Ballad DLC Pack. It'sa set of Armor originally worn by members of the Royal Guard that can be found as part of the "EX Royal Guard Rumors" Side Quest. It consists of the Royal Guard Cap, the Royal Guard Uniform and the Royal Guard Boots. Wearing the full set says that it only decreases usage Stamina of Link's charge attack but it also reduces the swimming dash stamina cost by 50% and climbing jump stamina cost by 50%. For some reason it does not decrease the rate of stamina usage in bullet time. It can't be Dyed at the Kochi Dye Shop, nor can it be enhanced by a Great Fairy.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Wiki Guide

How to Get the Royal Guard Outfit

Head to the Riverside Stable and enter the inn to find a new journal: Super Rumor Mill EX: Volume 4.

Video Guide

It speaks of the Royal Guards who protected the royal family that were killed during the Calamity, but their uniform still exists somewhere in the castle. You are given the following clue:

"They say a former maid spoke of treasure near the Dining Hall, in the Guard's Chamber, and on the second floor."

This means of course you will need to journey into Hyrule Castle's interior if you wish to obtain this armor - so prepare yourself with good armor and weapons and plenty of food before making the journey.

Royal Guard Boots

From the main entrance to the castle, head up the road curving left past a Rusted Guardian and head into the castle through a door on the right.

Once in the long hallway, take a left to find a Lizalfos guarding the stairs down to the Guard's Barracks.

Look down and you'll spy two more Lizalfos guarding a chest between them. Defeat them and open it to grab the Royal Guard Boots.

Royal Guard Uniform

Heading back up the stairs from the Guard Barracks, you can't enter the hall to the Dining Room due to the malice, so enter the hallway opposite the stairway and shoot an eye to clear a path further down the hall where you can take a left to clear our more malice in a stairwell up to the exterior.

Either return to the entrance to the castle and climb up the Eastern side by the waterfall, or defeat the nearby Guardian, and take the long path left to find the entrance to the Dining Hall. Inside are two Moblins on each side - but you can ignore them and slip through the doors into the next hallway.

Head down the long stone hall to the very end where you can spot a crumbling false wall on the left you can blow up with Remote Bombs. Inside, behind a Royal Guard's Sword, is the chest holding the Royal Guard Uniform.

Royal Guard Cap

The final piece of gear is arguably in the hardest place - the second floor of the Sanctum. There are many ways to get to the sanctum. While the main road up is dangerous and full of Guardians, you can backtrack down the road from the Dining Hall to the landslide near the entrance to the Library. Climb up the rocks from here and you can make it all the way to the Sanctum.

From here, avoid the pools of malice - and don't enter the main floor or you'll trigger the boss fight. Instead, climb the spires and low rooftops until you reach balconies on the second floor. Once inside, look below a statue of a knight to find the Royal Guard Cap.

While the Royal Guard Outfit doesn't give a huge bonus to defense, it is a great offensive set, as its set bonus allows you to charge up your weapons while consuming less stamina in the process.

Hyrule second botw floor castle

There are loads of brand new gear items for you to find in The Champions' Ballad DLC pack for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, one addition of which is the Royal Guard armor. In this Zelda Breath of the Wild Royal Guard armor guide, we'll be walking you through acquiring all of the pieces of this armor set as easily as possible.

Zelda Breath of the Wild Royal Guard Armor

To start the brand new EX Royal Guard Rumors quest, you're going to want to have updated Breath of the Wild, to install the new Champions' Ballad DLC Pack 2. Once you've done this, load up your save file, and you'll hear the voice of Zelda, telling Link that he's got some new missions to undertake. One of these is the EX Royal Guard Rumors, which you can start by heading to Riverside Stable in central Hyrule, and reading the book left there on the table.

The Super Rumor Mill EX: Volume 4 book will instruct Link to find three items scattered throughout the treacherous ruins of Hyrule Castle, which include the second floor, the Dining Hall, and the Guards' Chambers. Just below, we'll section off each item of the Royal Guard gear, directing you to each one as quickly as possible.

How to Find the Royal Guard Uniform

For the first item, the Royal Guard Uniform, you'll need to head into the Dining Hall of Hyrule Castle, although the directions for this item are slightly misleading. To reach the Dining Hall, we'd recommend approaching Hyrule Castle from the west, flying in over the moat, and climbing up until you reach a road that passes by the middle of a waterfall.

Near this, you'll find a door leading off the road to the left, which you can pass through to reach the Dining Hall. In here, you'll find four Moblins, two at either end of the hall, but you'll actually want to ignore them and take the door out of the Dining Hall straight ahead of you. You'll now find yourself in a corridor leading left and right, but what you want is a path that leads off ahead of you. Take this path all the way to the end, ignoring the path running off on the left, and you'll find a wall that you can destroy with your Bomb Rune.

All you need to do now is destroy the wall with your Bomb Rune, and you'll find a chest at the feet of a statue containing the Royal Guard Uniform item.

How to Find the Royal Guard Boots

Now you'll need to make your way to the Guards' Chambers to claim the Royal Guard Boots. From where you found the Royal Guard Uniform, head back to the corridor outside of the Dining Hall itself, and turn right, making your way down a long flight of stairs.

You'll come to a Calamity and a Moblin, so take out both of them and then turn left, passing through a door and up a set of stairs. Now you'll be at the Observation Deck, with another Calamity and another Moblin. Defeat the enemies waiting for you here, and then jump off the balcony of the Observation Deck, turning right and running past the stationary Guardian along the road. Keep running along the road, but keep an eye out for a doorway on your right, leading back into Hyrule Castle.

Inside this door, you'll find a gate that you can open with the Cyronis Rune, and follow the hallway round to the right, where you'll have to kill a green Lizalfos. Follow the hallway left again, and you'll come to an area with two Lizalfos sat around a campfire, who you'll have to kill. Inspect the chest by the campfire, and you'll find the Royal Guard Boots.

How to Find the Royal Guard Cap

For the Royal Guard Cap, the final item in the EX Royal Guard Rumors quest, you'll have to make it to the Sanctum, the highest tower of Hyrule Castle. This definitely isn't an easy destination to reach, but you'll be familiar with the location if you've already fought Calmity Ganon.

The directions for the Royal Guard Cap are highly misleading, as although the description makes it sound like the item is on the second floor of Hyrule Castle, it actually means the second floor of the Sanctum itself. When you're outside the Sanctum, you'll want to instead use one of the pillars to climb up the outside of the tower, until you eventually find yourself on a floor just above where the boss fight with Calamity Ganon begins.

This floor, which begins with an outdoor balcony area but leads inside to a floor covered with Calmity, has a single statue inside. At the feet of this relatively small statue, you'll find the chest containing the Royal Guard Cap, bringing the EX Royal Guard Rumors quest to a close.

Now that we're done with the Royal Guard Uniform guide for Breath of the Wild, why not check out our additional guides on the new Champions' Ballad DLC Pack 2, including how to complete the Champions' Ballad quest, as well as how to complete Champion Urbosa's Song quest.

Breath of the Wild: What SECRETS Lie Within Hyrule Castle?

Hyrule Castle maps

The Champions’ Ballad downloadable content for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild adds several new outfits for Link. The Royal Guard armor set lets you look like … a Royal Guard of old. Equipping the entire set will give you a Charge Attack Stamina Up bonus (making your charge attack consume stamina slowly).

This guide will walk you through all the steps for the EX Royal Guard Rumors side quest, from finding the book of rumors to the locations of all three pieces of gear. Collecting this outfit is going to take you into Hyrule Castle and will, eventually, take you right up to (but not into) the final boss fight against Calamity Ganon. Which is to say, this is a pretty late-game side quest. The enemies are tough, there are Guardians everywhere and you’re in a very challenging area.

Hyrule Castle isn’t linear. You can wind you way through its serpentine paths in any way you like. This makes exploring the castle somewhat confusing. That's why we created maps to show you where everything is. Use these to get your bearings. (You can also find these maps in our Hyrule Castle and Calamity Ganon walkthrough.)

You'll notice that there are two maps: one for the exterior and one for the interior. The exterior map shows you where each door into Hyrule Castle takes you. (The doors are all pink on the map.) The interior map shows you where the rooms are.

You’ll find your hints for this side quest in the Super Rumor Mill EX: Volume 4 book in Riverside Stable. The stable is in central Hyrule. Warp to Wahgo Katta shrine to get close.

The book tells you that the three pieces you’re looking for are in Hyrule Castle in three locations:

  • The Dining Hall
  • The Guards’ Chamber
  • The second floor

The first two clues are nice and specific. The third … not so much. But we’re here to help.

Warp to Saas Ko’sah shrine inside of Hyrule Castle. Turn left when you arrive and go up the stairs. Use Magnesis on the metal block or the bookcase at the top to get into the Library. You’ll have to avoid or kill some Lizalfos, then use the stairs on your left to get up to the second floor. Stick to the left side and work your way down to the other end. Go through the door at the end of the room, then follow the hallway to the right.

Fight off the Lizalfos waiting for you, then take the next left (it’s the only way not blocked). Go through the door all the way down at the end of the hall and fight the Moblin you meet inside. Once it’s dead, check around the ground floor of this room for a bunch of weapons, then climb up the stairs. There’s a gap you’ll have to climb across, then just keep following them up.

Turn right at the top of the stairs, then follow the hallway to the next T-intersection. The Dining Hall is on your right, but that’s not actually where you need to go. And it’s full of Moblins.

Turn left and go down to the end of the hallway. It looks like a dead end, but there’s a wall you can destroy on your left. Smash through to find the EX chest inside (along with a Royal Guard’s Sword).

From the hidden room where you picked up the Royal Guard Uniform, head back into the hallway. Pass by the Dining Hall and continue along the hallway down the stairs. The next room you come to will have some Calamity and a Moblin to deal with. Once everything’s clear, go through to door on your left and up the stairs.

This will lead you to the Observation Room where there’s another Moblin and another Calamity Eyeball to deal with. Head straight through the room and onto the balcony. Jump off and to the right to drop to the road below you. Keep heading right until you find a door back into the castle.

When you go inside, switch to Cryonis to prop the portcullis open, then follow the hallway around to the left and up the stairs. Follow the hallway left again, then fight off the Lizalfos waiting for you. Take the door on your left that leads down to the Guards’ Chamber.

Kill the two Lizalfos at the bottom of the stairs. The EX chest is right by their fire. You’ll find the Royal Guard Boots inside.

The final piece of this set is in the same room as the final boss fight of the game. There’s also not a quick way there from where you picked up the boots. Just get outside and work your way all the way to the top of the castle, but do not enter the Sanctum — if you do, you’ll start the final fight.

Instead, turn to the left before you enter the hallway and climb onto the low wall. Turn back toward the castle and start climbing up the outside of the Sanctum. Keep climbing until you’re on the roof. Then climb up one more time.

You’ll find yourself on a wide ledge high above where you started. Turn left and climb over the buttress. Squeeze between the tower and the Calamity on the other side, then keep heading left. Climb over the next buttress as well, and you’ll find a balcony with a door into the second floor of the Sanctum.

Go inside and turn left. The EX chest is at the feet of a statue. The Royal Guard Cap is inside.
