The Hawaiian islands have enchanted us. We visited Oahu, Maui, Hawaii, and Kauai via cruise ship, with time to enjoy the scenery, delicious food, and adventures that each island has to offer. In short, we became a bit obsessed with this trip. We can’t stop talking about it (or talking about going back!)! So, what do we decide? That we should throw a Hawaiian-themed party to share a bit of what we learned, saw, and tasted in the islands with our families. Because I was given a pretty flower hair clip by our new Hawaiian friends on Kauai, I decided to make DIY flower hair clips as some of the favors for the party.

After stocking up on some cute luau supplies from the dollar store, I decided to give a new use to one of the Hawaiian leis (that cost me $1 for THREE of them! Deal!)– I would cut it apart and use the fabric flowers for my hair clips! Because this budget craft actually worked perfectly, I decided to share!

Supplies:

(Makes approximately 12 hair clips)

Directions:

1. Cut the string of the lei and pull all the parts off.

If you want to make rainbow flowers (which would be really cute and colorful for a child’s party), you can leave all the flowers in one pile, but I separated mine into stacks by color. I ended up with 5 pieces of fabric in each pile which would make 2 clips of each color (12 total).

2. Slip a piece of the flower-shaped fabric into the bobby pin. Make sure to center it so there’s a good amount of fabric on each side.

3. Put hot glue on the visible part of the bobby pin and just around it on the fabric. Take a second piece of fabric and lay it on top. Basically, you’re sandwiching one side of the bobby pin between 2 pieces of fabric.

Tip: I rotated the fabric a bit each time I added a new layer to prevent the petals from lining up exactly straight. This just makes it look a bit more realistic.

4. After you have sandwiched the bobby pin, the remaining layers only require one small dot of glue in the center. Keep layering until you are satisfied.

5. When the glue is cool and dry, scrunch the fabric together towards the center. This will create more of a flower shape instead of a flat shape. It looks a bit more natural (like a rose or carnation). Here, you can see the difference between those that are still fairly flat (yellow) and the ones I have scrunched and shaped (red).

All done! Easy, right? These flowers could easily be used for all sorts of projects!

More Ideas:

• Clip the finished hair bow to the top of a gift. Maybe you brought home souvenirs from Hawaii, so this would make a cute addition!
• Use different hair pieces like barrettes or ponytail holders instead of bobby pins.
• Glue just the flower to the top of a wrapped gift instead of a bow.
• Glue just the flower to the handle of a basket.
• Glue a bunch of flowers to a base (like Styrofoam) to make a centerpiece.
• Use the flowers as embellishments on sewing projects (bags, costumes, baby shoes, knitted hats, etc.).
