The Gcode BMW 5 Series debuted as a model and represents the seventh generation of the automaker's midsize luxury sedan. It sits between the 3 Series and 7 Series in BMW's lineup of traditional four-doors. Competition includes the usual suspects (Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6) plus newcomers like the Genesis G

There's nothing especially ultimate about this driving machine, but that doesn't mean it's not a good car in its own right. Allow us to explain. We were rightfully disappointed in the 5's lack of feedback from the steering and suspension; this is a car that feels more isolated than its predecessors. However, that isolation contributes to what makes the G30 5 Series such a great cruiser.

In addition to dead-solid stability at autobahn-level triple-digit speeds, this 5 Series is also one of the most comfortable chariots in which to carry out your commute. The suspension is supple, the seats are supportive and cushy, the adaptive cruise system is clever, and the audio system is lovely. That said, some infotainment functions are buried deep within the iDrive system, so much so that we'd forget they exist. Plus, wireless Apple CarPlay pairing is difficult and unreliable.

As long as you're not expecting the G30 5 Series to drive like an E39 M5, you'll find a comfortable luxurious cruiser that, while a little too complicated for its own good, would be welcome in our driveway any time.

The 5 Series fares rather well in safety testing conducted by the IIHS. It aces all six crashworthiness evaluations and earns the highest possible Superior ratings for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention. Its only slip-up is in the notoriously tricky headlight section. The standard LEDs receive a mid-low Marginal rating whereas the upgraded LEDs included in the Lighting package earn the highest possible score of Good. With the proper headlights, the 5 Series is a IIHS Top Safety Pick+.

Some active safety features, including auto emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and driver fatigue monitoring, are standard features on all models. However, selecting the Driving Assistance Plus package adds stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and front cross-traffic alert.

BMW's midsizer seats five in comfort, but the impressive bit is the size of its trunk. At cubic feet, it can hold more than the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, and the Genesis G The electric hardware of the e reduces trunk volume to cubic feet, which is still more than any of those competitors.

Every 5 Series comes standard with a inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay functionality, though unlike every other automaker, BMW will make you pay a subscription fee for it after the first year. A speaker audio system is standard, but there are premium speaker Harman Kardon and speaker Bowers & Wilkins systems available as optional extras.

BMW 5 Series: Model overview, pricing, tech and specs BMW continues the tradition of offering 7 Series accoutrements in a slightly smaller midsize package.

The BMW 5 Series has been on sale in the US since A complete redesign for brought it into its seventh generation. For , not much is new except for the loss of the diesel-powered d, which is in step with BMW's recent announcement that it would not offer a diesel in its lineup this model year.

Powertrain and specs

The 5 Series offers a choice of four powertrains that can power the rear wheels or all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. For starters, in the i and i xDrive (all-wheel drive), there's a liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces horsepower and pound-feet of torque, which is competitive with other midsize luxury sedans.

Next up, the e iPerformance and e xDrive iPerformance plug-in hybrids are also powered by a liter turbocharged four-cylinder, but in addition, are augmented with an electric motor that brings total system output to horsepower and pound-feet of torque. That's stout, but the Volvo S90 T8 plug-in hybrid packs more huff and puff with horsepower and pound-feet of torque.

The turbocharged liter, straight-six-cylinder i and i xDrive are good for horsepower and pound-feet of torque, while the Mi xDrive with its liter, turbocharged V8 makes horsepower and pound-feet of torque.

The base i gets an EPA-estimated 24 miles per gallon in the city and 34 mpg highway. All-wheel drive reduces those figures by 1 mpg. The e gets 72 MPGe, 29 mpg combined and has a mile all-electric range while the xDrive version achieves 67 MPGe, 28 mpg combined and can go 14 miles on electric power alone. For reference, the aforementioned gas-only models return 27 mpg combined.

According to EPA estimates, all-wheel drive does not affect the i's fuel economy, so all six-cylinder 5 Series sedans are rated at 21/29 mpg. The V8 Mi xDrive has yet to receive official fuel economy figures.

The least expensive 5 Series' fuel economy is about the same as other liter, turbocharged midsize luxury sedans. The Audi A6 achieves 25/34, while the Jaguar XF has identical figures. The Mercedes-Benz E is less efficient at 22/30, but the the liter version of the Volvo S90 has fuel economy that's identical to the i.

Inside the 5 Series, there's enough room for up to five passengers. At cubic feet of trunk space, the 5 Series sits on the upper end of the class, while plug-in hybrid versions make do with cubic feet. That's still better than many competitors except the Jaguar XF with up to cubic feet. The Audi A6, meanwhile, offers only cubic feet. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Volvo S90 have even less trunk space at and cubic feet.


Most players in this class offer limited standard interior and driver safety tech, but the 5 Series bucks that tendency with standard Apple CarPlay (although Android Auto is absent) on a inch touchscreen that can also be operated via BMW's iDrive rotary-dial interface.

Also standard are natural-language voice recognition, real-time traffic/parking monitoring, a speaker, watt audio system with HD radio, and embedded navigation with a GB hard drive. Standard driver assistance systems include pedestrian-detecting collision-mitigation braking, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and driver fatigue monitoring.

Options and pricing

With base prices from $53, to $74, (plus $ for destination), the BMW 5 Series falls on the pricier side of the segment. Excluding the Mi xDrive, all 5 Series sedans are offered in three option-package tiers. For an extra $1,, the Convenience Tier adds keyless access, satellite radio, heated front seats and a powered trunk lid.

The Premium Tier tacks on another $1, and adds features like a head-up display, gesture control, wireless smartphone charging and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Another $1, for the Executive Tier gets you full-LED headlights with automatic high beams, soft-closing doors, a digital instrument cluster display, sunshades for the rear side windows and a power rear sunshade.

All four-cylinder 5 Series models, whether gas-powered or plug-in hybrid, are priced identically, so the Executive Tier brings the i and e iPerformance to $57,, while top-tier xDrive models end up at $60, The i starts at $58, and the Executive Tier xDrive model runs $65,

The Mi xDrive starts at $74,, but instead of tiers, it offers a $1, Premium Package and an $1, Executive Package that offer pretty much the same bundles of options you'll find on the lower models' corresponding tiers.

A $1, Driving Assistance Package features adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist with side collision avoidance and front cross-traffic alert. The $ Parking Assistance Package adds a surround-view monitor, ultrasonic parking sensors and autonomous parallel parking, while the $1, Luxury Seating Package includes front-seat massaging and ventilation.

While some of its rivals have worked hard to catch up to BMW's 5-Series in performance and handling, BMW has switched gears and taken a more luxury-oriented approach with its mid-size sedan. What was once a driver's delight is now more of a boulevard cruiser—one with a posh interior, plenty of people and cargo space, and a range of efficient and strong-performing engines. When the Mi performance model was introduced for , we were hopeful that the Ultimate Driving Machine was returning to the BMW showroom, but it, too, suffers from a mixed bag of dynamic traits.

What's New for ?

BMW's mid-size sedan sees several updates for Blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, front and rear parking sensors, and rear cross-traffic alert are all now standard; Apple CarPlay is also standard but requires an annual subscription after the first year of ownership. The optional head-up display, a wireless smartphone charging pad, a self-parking feature, and onboard Wi-Fi hotspot are now part of the Premium package; a new Convenience package includes niceties such as a power-operated trunk lid, passive entry, SiriusXM satellite radio, and heated front seats. The Executive package now includes soft-close doors, manual side-window shades, adaptive headlamps, automatic high-beams, and a digital gauge display.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Although it's tempting to spring for the twin-turbo V-8 Mi, the midrange i and its silky-smooth inline-six is the better value, so it's our recommendation. It's easy to skyrocket the i's price by adding on a number of expensive packages, so we'd take it easy and select the Convenience package, which adds heated seats, satellite radio, passive keyless entry, and a power-operated trunk lid.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Likes: Silky inline-six, beastly Mi, available plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Dislikes: Merely adequate braking performance, comfort-oriented ride and handling, not as athletic as the 5-Series models of yesteryear.

Smooth, powerful, and efficient, both the four-cylinder in the i and the six-cylinder in the i motivate this big sedan with authority. Each pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission that shifts intuitively and quickly, making the most of the available power. The i's six-cylinder is silky and potent, and it makes a delightful noise to boot. The e plug-in uses a turbocharged liter four-cylinder and an electric motor to produce horsepower; in our testing, an all-wheel-drive e managed a nippy second run from zero to 60 mph and delivered the advertised fuel efficiency. We haven't had the opportunity to test the d and its hp diesel liter inline-six.

With a twin-turbocharged liter V-8 under its hood, the Mi is the athlete of the 5-Series lineup (we review the M5 separately) and in our hands, the Mi sprinted through our acceleration runs faster than the Audi S6 and the 10Best-award-winning Mercedes-AMG E All of the 5-Series models are competent handlers, but they lack the kind of driving verve we expect from BMW. Steering feedback is light, and the ride, even in the performance-oriented Mi, feels tuned more for comfort than for pure driving pleasure.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

On top of their already impressive power and refinement, the engines offered here are remarkably efficient. EPA numbers for both the four-cylinder i and the six-cylinder i are near the top of the class. Both cars were overachievers in our real-world testing, delivering 34 and 31 mpg, respectively. If that's still not enough to placate your fuel-sipping needs, check out the e plug-in hybrid—which managed 38 mpg in our test—or the d diesel.

Interior, Infotainment, and Cargo

Likes: Plenty of space and upscale features, large high-resolution infotainment display, large trunk.
Dislikes: Luxury option packages are pricey, Android Auto not available, precious little cubby storage.

Rich appointments and good design make the cockpit of the 5-Series a civilized space—and a noticeable upgrade compared with the somewhat drab cabin of its predecessor. It's also spacious for rear-seat passengers and features an impressive amount of technology, even for this high-tech segment. We've experienced the optional way multi-contour front seats, which adjust in every way imaginable and provide plush comfort for hours on end. The standard seats might not be as sybaritic, but still adjust in 16 ways. In a similar vein, many elements that improve the BMW's interior ambience are optional, such as a faux-leather dashboard upgrade and various levels of real, cow-sourced leather upholstery.

A large, inch high-resolution central display is standard on every 5-Series and is controlled by either BMW's iDrive rotary knob, the touchscreen, or various voice commands. Navigation, a USB port, and Bluetooth streaming audio are standard, although you have to pay extra for SiriusXM satellite radio. Apple CarPlay is standard but after the first year, users must pay a subscription fee to keep using the feature. Android Auto is not available, and neither is an auxiliary input jack. BMW's Gesture Control is an unusual option: It allows the driver or passenger to input certain commands with hand gestures, but we found it to be more gimmicky than useful.

The BMW's large trunk is on par with its competitors (we fit six carry-on suitcases inside a i's trunk), but the cabin is lacking in cubbies and storage compartments. To accommodate the battery pack, the new plug-in hybrid e has four less cubic feet of trunk space than nonhybrid models. The e fit two fewer carry-on suitcases in its trunk but retains its folding rear seats.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 5-Series performed well in crash testing, earning top marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety across the board and earned a Top Safety Pick+ award; however, it has yet to be tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Plenty of driver-assistance features are standard and additional tech is optional. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert
  • Available adaptive cruise control

BMW's warranty and complimentary scheduled maintenance are about average for the segment but fall short of the Jaguar XF's more comprehensive coverage.

The 5 Series sedan offers a wide range of powertrains, from a horsepower turbo four cylinder to a horsepower, twin-turbo V8. And let's not forget the raging M5 that serves up horsepower, or in the case of the M5 Competition variant, and whose all-wheel drivetrain can be decoupled to offer the driving feel of a rear-drive car. The e plug-in hybrid is the eco-friendly choice, with a maximum EV driving range estimated at 26 km.
