Destiny 2 Menagerie rune combos and recipes: How to get the gear you want
Even after all these seasons, Destiny 2 Menagerie rune combos are still the keys to some of the best gear in the game. The Menagerie is neither gone nor forgotten, and as long as its gear can be infused up, it will remain as one of the most consistent ways to farm specific rolls on certain guns. You've got to do more than shoot dudes, though. The Menagerie uses a unique and intuitive rune system that determines what loot you get, and mastering this can greatly speed up the process of acquiring individual pieces of gear.
You can put up to three runes into the Chalice at once, with each rune adding another parameter to your loot. Opening the chest will consume these runes and give you a reward based on which runes you used. There are dozens of possible rune combinations, recipes and even more potential rewards, so in this guide we'll go over all the Destiny 2 Menagerie rune combos and what they give you. Let's start with the guns.
Destiny 2 Menagerie rune combos: The recipes you need to get specific guns
I put together some graphics to show how these menageries recipes and rune combinations work (click the "enlarge" button in the corner for a better look) because I find it's easier to show than to tell. Basically, your first rune determines what type of gun you receive: an SMG, sniper, rocket launcher (or one machine gun), hand cannon, sidearm, fusion rifle, or shotgun. Your second rune changes which SMG, sniper, hand cannon, or so on that you receive. And your third rune sets the Masterwork stat for that weapon.
For example, if I wanted to get an Austringer hand cannon with a range Masterwork, I'd put a green Desire rune in slot one, any red rune in slot two, and any green rune in slot three. If I wanted an Imperial Decree shotgun with a handling Masterwork, I would use a blue Wealth rune in slot one, any green rune in slot two, and any purple rune in slot three.

Destiny 2 Menagerie rune combos: recipes for specific armor sets
Getting armor from Menagerie recipes follows a similar process, but obviously runes will correspond to different things. Your first rune determines what armor piece you get: helmet, arms, chest, legs, or a class item. Your second rune affects which armor set that piece of gear comes from and determines its stat trait. For instance, putting any purple rune in the second slot will give you Tangled Web armor, but if you want a Recovery roll on that armor piece, you'll need to use a purple Beast rune specifically.
Finally, your third rune sets the elemental resistance for that armor piece. I didn't include these resistances in the above graphic because quite frankly they are a waste of runes and time. The elemental resistances on armor do next to nothing and aren't worth worrying about. For that reason, I never use a third rune when grinding armor in the Menagerie. If you must know, purple runes give arc resistance, red and blue give solar, and green give void.

Destiny 2 Menagerie Loot Guide
With the release of the Menagerie and the Chalice of Opulence players can earn runes which can be put into the chalice to unlock certain weapons. What weapons drop when open the Menagerie Chest after the final boss will solely be determined by the runes that you put in the chalice. There are many different combinations that can be used in the Chalice as it has three slots for runes. In this guide we’ll go over what each slot does, the different types of runes that you can slot into the Chalice, some necessary upgrades to get those different runes, and some of the known weapon combinations that can drop in the Menagerie.
The Chalice of Opulence has three slots that can be unlocked using Imperial currency. The first slot will be unlocked when doing the Invitation quest, but the other slots must be unlocked as you go. Simply do activities to earn Imperials and you can then use that currency to unlock slots or purchase upgrades to the Chalice.
- Slot I – Determines what types of weapons or armor will drop
- Slot II – Determines the traits of the weapon or armor
- Slot III – Determines Masterwork Properties
You’ll start out by only being able to find purple runes when completing different challenges that have a chance of rewarding you with Runes. However, if you upgrade the Chalice of Opulence you can start finding Red Runes, Green Runes, and Blue Runes too. These different color runes can be used in the Chalice to unlock different weapon types and other powerful gear. As explained in this Chalice upgrade guide, the Rune Compatibility upgrades are the ones you want to focus on if getting different color Runes is your objective. If you don’t do the Rune Compatibility upgrades for I, II, and III you will not ever see the red runes, green runes, and blue runes.
However, once you do get these upgrades on the chalice you will have a much larger pool of possible combinations. Once you have the top slot (Slot I) and the left slot (Slot II) unlocked as well as the first rune compatibility upgrade you can start getting unique weapons like the Beloved Sniper Rifle or Calus Mini-Tool.
Menagerie Rune Loot Guide
Mixing and matching these runes in the slots will allow you to fine tune the items that you are getting. For example, using a Rune of Jubilation in the top slot of the chalice will drop you sniper rifles, while using a Rune of the beast will drop a sub-machine gun. These drops are guaranteed so long as you use these runes. Now the left side (Slot II) will determine which weapon in that class will drop for you, but it depends on the color of the rune that you use.

Destiny 2’s Menagerie is the newest PvE activity to be introduced during the Season of Opulence. Along with new encounters, the Menagerie has a ton of new loot that players can grind for. One of the coolest items you can obtain is the Opulent Armor set, which is covered in gold and ornate gems. However, obtaining all these pieces can be quite difficult, especially early on since it requires a lot of Imperials.
In order to unlock the ability to grind for Opulent Armor, you’ll need to unlock the Blue Runes in the Chalice of Opulence. This will take thousands of Imperials, so don’t worry if it takes a few weeks to unlock Rune Compatibility III. Every combination for the Opulent Armor requires a blue rune either in the first or second slot. Here’s a breakdown of how to get each piece of armor in the Menagerie.
Armor Piece | Top Rune | Left Rune |
Head | Rune of War (Green) | Any Blue Rune |
Chest | Rune of Pleasure (Blue) | Any Blue Rune |
Gauntlet | Rune of Cunning (Red) | Any Blue Rune |
Legs | Rune of Gluttony (Red) | Any Blue Rune |
Class-Item | Rune of Joy (Purple) | Any Blue Rune |
Once you have enough runes, slot them into the Chalice of Opulence and then head into the Menagerie. After finishing the activity, approach the chest and open it up to receive your reward. At the time of writing this, Bungie has not patched an exploit that allows users to respawn the final chest. You can do this by running out of the boss room after you open up the chest.
Keep following along a path until you see text appear in the bottom left corner. This will indicate when you’ve left the boss area. Now turn around and head right back to the boss room. Doing so we despawn and then respawn the chest, now closed, so you can re-open it to obtain more loot. Remember, you only have 260 seconds to keep respawning the chest and you will need to slot new runes after opening it up.

Menagerie recipes and rune combinations - Destiny 2

Unlocking the new Menagerie-exclusive weapons and armor included in Season of Opulence requires knowing several Menagerie recipes. Each of these recipes utilizes runes and the Chalice of Opulence to create a specific weapon or piece of armor. These rune combinations can be used to unlock the 45+ activity-specific items in Destiny 2.
Menagerie recipes
Each Menagerie recipe uses a set of runes slotted into Rune Slot 1 and Rune Slot 2 in the Chalice of Opulence. These two rune slots are solely responsible for what weapon you receive or what piece of armor you get. The third rune slot dictates what Masterwork the weapon or armor piece receives.
Menagerie weapon rune combinations
The table below shows all available Menagerie recipes for weapons. Some highlights include Beloved and Austringer. These two weapons are versions of guns players may remember from Destiny 1. Another option is Drang, a gun that pairs with the Exotic Hand Cannon Sturm.

Below are two tables, designed by windzer408, that show a simplified look at all available Menagerie recipes. These tables only show the first two runes that are required for the desired weapon or armor outcome, they do not include the Masterwork option.

To read these tables, start by finding the item you wish to create. Using the Austringer as an example, look to the top row to see what rune must be in the first slot, in this instance it would be a Rune of Desire. Next, look to the left column to see what must be placed in the second slot, in this example it would be any of the red runes.
At this point, you can run through the Menagerie and you will receive the specified item. However, you can also put a rune into the third slot to give the item a Masterwork perk. Hover over each of the runes to see what type of effect it will give. For weapons, these effects are handling, range, reload, and stability. For armor, the effects allow for greater resistance against elemental attacks.
For a complete list of every single item with all potential Masterwork options, check out this incredibly detailed Google Sheet by JpDeathBlade. There are four pages showing all possible combinations, of which there are over 600.
For the most part, the simplified Menagerie recipe table by windzer408 should suffice. It clearly shows the basic runes that must be used to acquire all armor and weapons. If you are looking for extremely specific Masterworks, then JpDeathBlade’s rune combination sheet is the way to go. Armor how to get menagerie
Destiny 2 Menagerie recipes: the best weapon and armor rune combos
The Destiny 2 Menagerie rune combos system, introduced with the Season of Opulence, gives you some control over the loot you'll be rewarded at the end of the Menagerie. The Chalice of Opulence, along with its associated runes allows you to narrow down the weapon or gear you'll receive once you complete the Menagerie and open the chest.
The Chalice allows the placement of up to three runes and each of these runes will add a condition to the loot you receive. Once the chest at the end of the Menagerie is opened, the runes used in the Chalice will be consumed. There are a fair few rune combinations available, along with a ton of potential outcomes, so read on to discover the Destiny 2 Menagerie rune combos and what you'll get in return.
Menagerie rune combos for specific guns
The first rune slot will control the weapon type that the chest will reward you, whether you're after a sniper, SMG, hand cannon, rocket launcher, sidearm, shotgun, or fusion rifle. The second rune alters the specific model within your chosen weapon type, while the third rune will allow you to specify the Masterwork stat for the weapon. The graphic (above) shows how the rune combinations work.
Here are a couple of examples: if you're after a Waking Vigil hand cannon with a reload Masterwork, you'd put a Desire rune in the first slot, a green rune in the second slot, and any red rune in the third. But if you wanted a Twilight Oath sniper with a handling Masterwork, you'd use a Jubilation rune in the first slot, a purple rune in the second, and another purple rune in the third slot.
Menagerie rune combos for specific armour
Obtaining armour works in much the same way but now each rune you place will correspond to armour types or traits. The first rune will determine which armour piece you'll receive, so helmet, chest, arms, legs, or a class-specific item. The second rune will specify the armour set that the gear belongs to, as well as its stat trait. As an example, placing a red rune in the second slot will give you an Exodus Down piece but to determine the accompanying stat trait—let's say Recovery for this example—you'll want to use the Gluttony rune specifically.
The third rune will determine the elemental resistance of the armour—though it's questionable whether you'll want to waste a rune for the third slot as the resistances on armour generally aren't worth agonising over. But if you do decide you want to make use of it, red and blue runes give solar resistance, green give you void, and purple runes give arc resistance.
If you want to test out different rune combos before committing your runes in-game, you can check out this tool from Peter Phillips.
