We are super excited and are in need of vendors!! Craft Vendors, Product Vendors, Food Vendors, Musical entertainment, and Santas for pics are all encouraged to attend!! I will have lots of details to come but if you are interested in having a booth at our show please comment below with the name of your business or product that you are selling!! I will contact you individually with details and vendor application in the next couple of weeks. Please note that some companies only allow one vendor for their brand per show therefore, spaces will be on a first come first served basis. For more than two decades, Dr. Joe Brown addressed crowds of thousands on Sunday mornings, sometimes in five back-to-back services, which were broadcast on local television.
Now, the retired Charlotte mega-church pastor is preaching to fewer than 100, leading a small Indian Land congregation and mapping its future.
Restoration Church of the Carolinas, formerly Higher Ground Church, is Brown’s new base on Possum Hollow Road.
“There was an opportunity here to minister to people that were hurting, so we came up with the name ‘Restoration’ and that’s what we wanted to do,” Brown said this week. “To take people that had been passed by or pushed to the curb and breathe God into them, fight for them and disciple them and launch them out.”
Brown led Hickory Grove Baptist Church for 26 years, during which it became the biggest Protestant church in Charlotte and the largest Southern Baptist church in the Carolinas, with 25,000 members across two campuses.
Brown retired in 2011, and served in some interim positions, including a two-year stint at Northside Baptist in Charlotte.
After the founding pastor of Higher Ground, Steve Jacks, retired last year, the church was absorbed by First Baptist Indian Trail, and senior pastor Dr. Mike Whitson asked Brown to take over leadership of the church.
“I knew God wasn’t through with him, and he would be a tremendous asset to what we’re trying to do down there,” Whitson said.
The Indian Trail pastor said he believes a traditional-style church will be successful in Indian Land, where there are already a number of more contemporary churches that cater to a younger demographic, such as nearby Transformation Church.
Brown is joined in his new venture by his fiancée, Phyllis Costner, director of network compliance at Inspiration Ministries, a Christian ministry and TV network based in Indian Land.
Costner worked at Hickory Grove 25 years ago when Brown was the pastor there, and the two reconnected again last October.
“The most important thing is just the love that we have for the Lord and that we have that commonality in ministry,” Costner said. “We’re both called to ministry.”
The couple have now been at the church for two months, and welcomed about 70 people to their first service at the beginning of February.
Costner said she was inspired to see Brown’s enthusiasm when preaching to a smaller group than the thousands he has taught in the past.
“To be able to do all of that and be able to come here and minister to 70 people or 80 people or 50 people – we don’t ever know who’s going to walk through those doors – and still have the same heart and the same passion, it touches my heart,” she said.
Among the new church’s attendees are 20 people who were previously members of Higher Ground.
“We have some longtime members that just have a love for the church, that didn’t want to leave, that wanted to see what happened when Indian Trail took it over,” Costner said.
Over the past eight weeks, Costner and Brown have been hard at work preparing the church to welcome new members. 
“When we got here, there was nothing. Not even a plant,” Costner said.
It was actually during the redecorating process one evening last month that Brown proposed to Costner in the church’s main sanctuary.
They’re looking forward to their journey together, both in married life and at Restoration Church.  
“We’re just really excited,” Costner said. “We have a vision for the church.”
Brown said his mission is to provide a place for those in Indian Land and the surrounding communities who have nowhere to go.
“Everybody knows that this is unbelievably strategic property. I mean, just look at what’s all going on around here,” he said. “There’s literally thousands of people in this area that go nowhere, that the church has kind of passed them by…. We appeal to people that have gotten sidetracked…. That’s who we’re going for.”
Brown said that eventually he would like to see the church grow, with the capacity to have Sunday school and youth programs.
“I would like to see us in two services,” he said.
Costner said she and Brown are looking forward to seeing what God will do at Restoration.
“We know without a doubt the Lord has called us to Indian Land and to Restoration Church,” she said. “We have a deep love for this place and for the history. We’re excited about what the Lord’s going to do.”
The official launch of Restoration Church of the Carolinas is the weekend of April 13-14, with an Easter egg hunt, bounce house and pig-pickin’ beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday and a Palm Sunday service at 10:30 a.m.
