Stair Tread Gauge and Shelf Layout Tool

Simple excellence

I was struggling to replace carpeted stairs with retrofit hardwood treads and risers. Both had to fit perfectly between visible stringers that had been faced with quarter inch plywood. Trying to measure and transfer were beyond my skills. I came across this jig by chance and even though it seemed a little expensive for what it was I was frustrated enough to risk the money. Am I ever glad that I did. I quickly started producing risers from quarter inch hardwood plywood and trimming retro treads to width. I added a strip of 1/64 inch plywood to the jig to get a perfectly snug fit. I could wish for the availability for different length end pieces and different length stringers as it would make the jig useful for larger 'inside' fitting jobs. But that's hardly a complaint. An aluminum or stainless steel version would be even better, albeit much more expensive. In short, I'd recommend this jig for installing retrofit stair treads. I started out thinking it was expensive but ended up thinking that it's a bargain.

Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question: How do you measure riser angle if you are not going to remove nose. I am going to install Cap A treads.

Answer: Check James Armstrong's answer from June 15: Make a couple of filler pieces that are thicker than the tread nose and measure with the gauge up against those. Or make two shorter ends for the gauge.
  • Question: My steps atr 68 " Does the step tread template come any longer

Answer: You can buy it and then make an extension. I had to make a custom end piece to make it fit against one side of my steps. I’m sure you can make it longer.
  • Question: Have ordered last week and have not recieved it. Where is my tool?

Answer: With all the covid things going on, everything has slowed all shipments.
  • Question: How long are the flaps at the end? I need it to be long enough for my tread.

Answer: As I recall the tabs are 9 inches wide. If you are doing wider treads you can simply use a straight edge to continue your scribe line or screw/double tape longer strips of material to the existing tabs.
  • Question: Material is metal or wood?

Answer: the gauge is made of wood, It is well made and I amazed was how easy it was to cut with near-exact precision, It is a good tool.
  • Question: how do you measure risers with this?

Answer: You can measure riser width as you do stair width; you cannot of course measure riser height, if that's your question. It's awesome for stair width as well as shelves.

Sturdy & easy to use

Needed to install retrofit stair treads to a house where nothing seems to be square. This tool was a huge help. Very sturdy & easy to use. I prefer it over the cheaper option they had at the home improvement store.

Pretty good value for the money. Not the most durable one on the market, but did it’s job.

Stair Treads gauge

OneTIME Tool - STAIR TREAD AND SHELF GAUGE - 2020 - RETIRED DECEMBER 14, 2020

Stair Tread and Shelf Gauge

The Stair Tread and Shelf Gauge starts with the two adjustable bevel ends. They swing in or out to match the angle of the adjacent wall. The versatility of this new tool comes from how the ends join the beam. By using our familiar Dual-Purpose Track and our proven track connectors, you can add beam sections as needed. You can use the same tool to make templates for shelves up to 64" or as short as 17".

One end has a sliding connector (you can put it on whichever end you prefer). This lets you adjust the length of the gauge right into the opening for the shelf or stair tread. Slide the beam out until both ends are against the walls, adjust the two ends to match the wall angle, lock it up and you have your perfect instant template.

This tool really shines on the next step…transferring the template to your stock. While other commercial jigs and all the homemade designs expect you to align the jig to the edge of your stock by feel, our Stair Tread & Shelf Gauge has two stops that flip over to give you a perfect reference for the edge. Now, simply mark your ends and make your cuts. The shelf, tread or riser will drop right in perfectly.

The adjustable bevel ends of the Stair Tread & Shelf Gauge are machined from high quality aluminum on our CNC milling centers and clear anodized for protection and to reduce friction. The extruded beam sections are also anodized, but in our familiar “Woodpeckers Red” color.

The Stair Tread & Shelf Gauge comes complete with (4) 12" sections of beam, (1) 6" section of beam, two adjustable bevel ends, two edge flip-stops and all the necessary connecting bars and knobs. You have your choice of a Woodpeckers molded plastic case or a Systainer. Both case options include custom-fit foam liners to keep your Stair Tread & Shelf Gauge protected while it’s off duty.

Like all our OneTIME Tools, Woodpeckers Stair Tread & Shelf Gauge is only made to order, precisely machined and carefully inspected in our Strongsville, Ohio factory. The deadline to order yours is Monday, December 14, 2020. Once orders are filled, this tool will be retired from our product line. Delivery is scheduled for April, 2021.

Credit Card Policy. Please note; if you're paying by credit card, you will not be charged until your order is ready to ship. However, Paypal and other payment services may charge you at the time the order is placed.

Stair Remodel: Installing the stair skirt

I remember that I woke up several times a night because my teeth did not fall on my teeth. And every time it turned out that I was lying all open: it was Igor who dragged the entire blanket over himself and wrapped himself in it with his head. And our life was poisoned by hordes of mosquitoes that floated in the air and attacked incessantly.
