Full Depths Walkthrough

BEFORE YOU BEGIN THIS AREA, PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

  1. You will find many Sewer Rats here and you will likely need a cure for poison, which you can pick-up from dead Ents in Darkroot, or alternatively, you can purchase from the Undead Merchant (female).
  2. You will find a new enemy; the Basilisk. They spew a gas which will kill and curse you if you stay in it for too long. Being cursed is a dire situation to be in and it's advised that you know more about the cursed status, how to improve your resistance to it and how to remove it before you begin. You can find further information on the cursed status here. High curse resistance gear such as the Antiquated Set can be extremely helpful.
  3. There is the very high chance you will become toxified so be sure to stock up on blooming purple moss clumps.

The Kitchen

Into the Depths - The Depths can be accessed once you obtain the key from the Capra Demon, backtrack to the door we found earlier before entering the fog gate to battle the demon. Head down the stairs, through the door, to find three Hollows - one will try to surprise you from behind on your right, once you've descended. After killing them, follow the direction of which the surprise Hollow came from, all the way back to acquire a Soul of a Nameless Soldier on a corpse behind a few boxes. Turn around and head to the end of the hallway, where there is a doorway on the left. Coming down the stairs, you should notice three Torch Hollows ahead as well as two more Hollows hiding behind the pillars. There will also be one more Hollow on the left of the stairs you came from. If you notice on the left of the railing, you should see a Butcher going about her business.

What's Cooking, Good Looking? - You should be able to dent in her health (substantially) with strong ranged attacks, but you can also aggravate her from up here before you even get a shot off, so don't be surprised if she brings the fight to you. Once make your way down to the kitchen, an Undead Attack Dog will stand at the foot of the steps, while another waits at the butchers table (the one beside the table does not respawn). Lure the Butcher before proceeding (if you haven't already triggered her). You will find a chest, next to the Butcher's table, containing the Large Ember. There are some boxes which you can break behind the table to reveal a small passage that leads to a hole in the ground, but don't go down there yet; make a note of the hole and head down into the water instead. The hole drops you down onto a ledge with a Spider Shield, above the Giant Rat.

Note: There is a shorter route to the end of the Depths that you can access at this point. But doing so will skip a huge portion of the area and it's items and possibly leave you at a disadvantage during the boss battle. Please see the 'Shortcut' section below this walkthrough for further information.

Helping Hand - Down in the water you'll find twoUndead Attack Dogs and a Hollow waiting. Make use of your ranged attacks to dispose of them and then make your way up the pile of rubble down there, then head through the hole in the wall. A secondButcher will be standing on beams above you to the left, as you ascend the rubble into the hallway. Use ranged attacks for an easy kill or bait her cleaver attacks for a backstab. Heading through the door she was standing over will lead you to a large room filled with barrels - Laurentius is trapped in one of them, in the corner of the room. After speaking, with him roll into the barrels to destroy them, to prevent any accidental harm to him while freeing him. Once done he'll now appear in Firelink Shrine as a pyromancy trainer. Head back and continue down the corridor, but be wary of the second Butcher coming from behind if you have not already fought her - you will hear her drop down if you haven't killed her yet (NOTE: The door leading to the sewers can be used to kill the second butcher easily if you are having trouble; lure the butcher to stand outside the door and close it, where she will remain and your attacks will still deal damage through the door. Beware that the butcher can likewise hit you through the door as well so just hit her once then step back, let her attack then hit her again). Move through the door at the end of the hall to make your way down the stairs to the sewers.

Entering The Sewers

Slimy Sewers - Once you enter the water, at the bottom of the stairs you'll see a corpse on your left with an item. DO NOT inspect it just yet as a Slime is hovering above and has a good chance to kill if it falls on you; you can force it to drop with a single arrow or by very slowly moving towards the corpse until it drops ahead of you. Once its on ground level, it is easy to dispose of. Also, be wary of the Torch Hollow that's in the passage ahead as he can sneak up on you if you're not paying attention. Once it's clear, the baited corpse has a Soul of a Nameless Soldier. Continue until you reach a corridor that extends to the right with a Torch Hollow on the opposite end. At this point it is highly recommended that you dispose of that Torch Hollow with a ranged weapon (if available) as a load of Slimes are on the ceiling between you and the undead. You can target some, but not all, of the slimes with arrows or spells as they cling to the ceiling. Or you can sprint past them and deal with them once they've grounded. If you're sprinting - be sure to hug the left side of the wall (facing the Torch Hollow) to avoid any dropping slimes- then it's extra important that you don't have to deal with the Torch Hollow, incase things don't go exactly according to plan. At the end of the slime-infested corridor you'll find a door, unlockable with the Master Key to access a bonfire. (HINT: it is actually better to not use it until you have killed the Giant Rat) But if you don't have the Master Key then the key you'll have to wait just a little bit longer to find the alternative key.

Bonfire Access - Head down the passage next to the bonfire door to find some boxes to your left and a Giant Rat behind the fence - it can't attack you from there, so don't worry. (Tip: If you have a bow, it is possible to kill the Giant Rat from here by shooting arrows through the small gap above the bars. You cannot shoot through the bars, but if you have a spear [the Silver Knight Spear, the Dragonslayer Spear or the Moonlight Butterfly Horn are especially good, but a regular spear, Winged Spear or Partizan etc. will also suffice.] you can also poke him through the bars). The boxes here can be broken to reveal a ladder leading down; there's no need to go down the for the time being - there is only a locked door down there and it only opens from the other side. Keep heading forward until you reach another t-junction. On the right, is a mob of sewer rats guarding a corpse with a Greataxe. (Tip: this is a good location to farm Humanity items once you have access to the nearby bonfire.) Head to the left but be wary of the box at the end of the corridor as a another sewer rat will leap out of it, so hug the right wall as you move towards the box in order to spring the trap but not get injured. Keep going forward and you will spot a rat running away from you. There are a few more more rats down the stairs on the right next to a reachable corpse holding the Sewer Chamber Key - which grants access to the bonfire if you do not have the Master Key.

Clearing Out the Sewers

Pest Control - Turn around and take the path under the stairs you just came down. You will notice a passage on your right with a drain hole towards the end, ignore this for now and head for the corpse in the distance to obtain a Soul of a Nameless Soldier. If you continue around to the right from there, you will find a fog gate, and through it you will see fourSewer Rats and a Channeler patrolling some ramparts that overlook the boss arena. If you want, you can battle them here or you can take a riskier route for an easier fight. The risky route involves heading back to the passage with the drain hole from earlier. A rat in the distance and will require you to jump over the hole to continue, fail to successfully complete the jump, and you will plunge into the Basilisk Tunnels, which will require you to make your way out again. Skip to the 'Basilisk Tunnels' section below for a survivalguide.

Note: It's highly advised that you kill the Channeler before engaging the boss, or be prepared to be shot at with fire soul arrows at you during the boss fight or even have spell buffs on the boss, which makes that battle unnecessarily hard.

Big Rodent Problem - Past the hole is a passage to your right with another rat at the end. Head in that direction to find a corpse with Soul of a Nameless Soldier at a t-junction - to the left there's an easily overlooked gap in the ground which you should avoid, as this one leaves you in the deepest part of the Basilisk Tunnels. Take a right and follow the tunnel to find the Giant Rat. For an easier battle, make your way back to the kitchen and drop down the hole (we ignored earlier) behind the table. You will land on the ledge mentioned earlier for a very easy fight. While on this ledge, go to the far right and make your way around to the other side of the room to find a Spider Shield on a corpse; dropping down to where the Giant Rat roamed, you'll find a Soul of a Nameless Soldier on a corpse.

Note: The shortcut mentioned in an earlier note can also be accessed from the Giant Rat's room. Again, please see the 'Shortcut' section below for more info.

The Final Piece - Head back to the drain hole and continue down the passage until you reach another t-junction. On your left will be the ramparts with the Channeler and his sewer rat friends and to your far right, a slime and the other drain hole on the ground. Once you've cleared all enemies on the ramparts, move further onto them, past the wooden stairs on the left and continue in that direction. The first two boxes on the left after the stairs are concealing two rats, ready to ambush you. Past them, right at the back you will find a corpse behind the last pillar with a Large Titanite Shard. Now it's time to explore the deepest and most dangerous area of the Depths...

The Basilisk Tunnels

Ugly Creatures - You can reach the Basilisk Tunnels by dropping down one of the holes in the narrow passages, or by accidentally falling down the middle of the waterfall in the Giant Rat's room. Try dropping down the drain hole you saw first, as this is the safest entry point. You will land next to some stairs and a few Basilisk will come around the corner momentarily (NOTE: Try to stay away from Basilisk they spew as their gas can curse you - please visit the Basilisk's page for detailed insight). Before moving along, climb the stairs behind you to find two basilisk ahead of you, one on your right – be ready for it. Continue through the passage to find a couple more Basilisk and a Soul of a Nameless Soldier on a corpse. Try luring the two Basilisks on your left before proceeding. Go right and take the path to the left. There should be five basilisks hiding under the stairs, however some may have gone aggro and attacked you sooner. You will also find a corpse with a Large Soul of a Nameless Soldier.

Do You Bleed? - Head back and take the path leading under the stairs where you are to be confronted by two more basilisks, to your left. Follow the path until you reach a corpse with Ring of the Evil Eye. Go back up the stairs and take a left into the doorway above the ground level you can reach by moving along the left side of the wall. Be careful once you enter the doorway because there is a hole in the ground just around the corner but there is a very tempting corpse on the other side of it holding treasure. You will need to start your run-up from the doorway and time the jump well once you turn the corner to obtain the Humanity on the corpse. Make your way back to the hole you fell through originally, its a mini waterfall next to some stairs. Continue down the stairs and follow the passage to until you reach a t-junction. Go left and be ready for the three rats coming around the corner. This is also where Knight Kirk will spawn, if you are in human form, so be ready for a moderately simple fight - just ensure it's a 1-on-1 and watch out for his bleed (NOTE: Make sure you are in human form so he is able to spawn, and you can begin your journey in acquiring his spiked armor). Head up the stairs, and make your way out of these tunnels.

Route to the Gaping Dragon

How About A Trade? - At the top of the stairs you will find yourself in a room with three Slimes, one of which is on the ceiling, and two Sewer Rats. To your right lies a passage with a long staircase leading you up to a door. Through the door you will find a room with a ladder, which should be familiar to you. It's the ladder revealed much earlier by breaking the boxes and it lets you gain easy and welcome access to the bonfire. To your left there is passage with stairs leading to the boss fight. There is also an opening through some metal bars on the left, where you will find Domhnall of Zena and the big doors that lead to Blighttown.

Teeth - Head into the passage that leads to the boss, move to your right and take the stairs down to the lower level. Continue on right and you will then encounter more stairs going down - this takes you to the fog gate, but don't go down them just yet. Go past them and next to the pillar ahead you may see summon signs for both Knight Solaire and Knight Lautrec, on either side of the pillar, if you are in Human form and their quest lines are still open - they will assist greatly with the impending boss fight. Keep going forward past this pillar to find a corpse with Heavy Crossbow and Heavy Bolts behind the corner on the left. Now that you're ready, continue down the stairs until you reach the fog gate...

Boss fight:Gaping Dragon

Once the boss is defeated you will receive the Blighttown Key and you can safely collect the Warrior Set that's in the boss arena. Go back to the room with Domhnall of Zena to use the key and enter the next area: Blighttown.

Shortcut

There is a shorter route through the Depths that skips a great deal of the area and leads on to the boss. Beware, doing so without killing the Channeler up on the top level can make the boss fight harder than it needs to be. Please follow the steps below to follow the shorter route:

  1. Behind the table where the first Butcher stands in the Kitchen section, there are boxes hiding a passage that leads to a hole. Go down this hole.
  2. You'll then be on the ledge above the Giant Rat's room. Kill the Giant Rat if this is your first trip here and then jump down into the pit where it was.
  3. You'll notice a waterfall at the end of the room. Approach the waterfall hugging the left wall and slide down. (It might take an attempt or two to get a hang of it as pillars can nudge you and make you fall if you do not correct your path)
  4. You'll land in the room that leads to the Blighttown doors. Work your way to the other end and take a right to go up the stairs to some ramparts. Going down two more flights of stairs will lead you to the boss' fog gate.
  5. Step through to fight the Gaping Dragon.

 

Hints and Farming


As you leave the Undead Burg, you will begin your descent into a kitchen area. Fight your way past the Zombies, being careful not to get surrounded, and prepare for a mini boss during your first visit. You will have to fight a Butcher with two giant cleavers.

There are two types of sewer rats, The smaller ones will leave you alone if you keep your distance. The larger ones will attack.

Both Solaire of Astora and Knight Lautrec can be summoned right before the boss if you are human. They will also follow you around, so you can summon them to help you clear the sewer and kill Kirk, before you fight the boss.

If you are not taking the shortcut, there are a lot of good items and farming opportunities throughout the rest of the sewers. Be on the lookout for holes in the drainage tunnels. You can leap over them, but falling through them often leads to trouble.

Watch out for Basilisks, ballooning up to spit a curse. The mist is an area of effect which will very quickly fill your curse meter, and kill you within a few moments of exposure. Those brittle statues that crumble when you walk through them are victims of the curse. It will cause your health to be halved, and can stack, resulting in 1/4 and then 1/8 of your normal health until your reach a healer later in the game, or use a purging stone from Oswald or the Undead Female Merchant. They cost 3000 or 6000 souls (respectively), so it might be easier to avoid the areas with the Basilisks if you don't have any.

Basilisk Farming Strategy: The Basilisks give 200 souls per kill. If you approach them using the ramps near the boss area/merchant then you don't have to worry about dropping into a bad situation. Be careful, and avoid aggroing groups. You can run back out the empty ramps, and make your way back to the bonfire easily afterwards. You can net 2000-2500 per run. The Basilisks also (since the 1.05 patch) drop Eyes of Death fairly often, which are important for the Gravelord Covenant.

There are also some Slimes, who don't pose too much of a threat if they are on the ground. The real trouble with them is that they can climb on the ceiling, waiting to drop down on you. It is possible to break free should they engulf you by mashing R1 (attack). They are very weak against fire, and drop upgrade stones. One farming technique involves learning a basic pyromancy spell, and finding the bonfire in the depths. When you head straight out from the fire, there are several Slimes on the ceiling ahead of you. Run past them, turn around and flame them all the hell. Pick up any spoils, then return to the bonfire. They will not drop any souls, but as your humanity increases, the upgrade drop rate increases.

It is also possible to farm Sewer Rats here, they have a 1 in 10-20 drop rate of Humanity.

Notes & Trivia:

  • Laurentius of the Great Swamp - Found in the 'Kitchen' section, trapped in a barrel. Free him and he'll then serve as your first Pyromancy trainer once he gets back to Firelink Shrine.
  • Domhnall of Zena - Found very close to the big doors that lead to Blighttown. He sells a variety of unique armour sets that are unlocked depending on your actions in the game.
  • Solaire of Astora - If in human form, this NPC's summon sign will appear nearby the fog gate that leads to the boss, assuming that you have not killed him already and have followed his quest-line correctly thus far.

Most of the enemies in The Depths are also weak to fire, so stock up on firebombs if you want to cause some damage.

Hollow, Is It Me You're Looking For?

You'll start off at the top of a stairwell, so head on down. At the bottom immediately turn around and head down to the right to kill a Hollow trying to sneak attack you from behind. With him dead, turn back around and kill the other two Hollows who'll probably be charging you at this point.

If you head back towards where the Hollow was and head a bit further up, you'll find a corpse behind some barrels. Break them and loot the corpse for a Large Soul of a Nameless Soldier.

Head downwards. You'll emerge into a room with lots of columns and a total of six Hollows armed with both swords and flaming torches. Put them all down one by one.

With them dead, head down a stairwell to the left. You may spot an enemy in the distance chopping away at a table - this is a Butcher, a dangerous foe. You can try and snipe him from a distance if you wish but he'll probably charge you anyway if you try.

Before that you'll find an Attack Dog at the bottom of the small staircase waiting to ambush you. Kill it. There's another Attack Dog to deal with next to the Butcher. Kill it quickly before the Butcher attacks you.

Although the Butchers do hit hard and for significant damage, they're also really slow. Use this to your advantage and circle around the back of the Butcher to perform a backstab whenever you get the chance. He'll soon go down.

Loot the chest nearby for the immensely important item Large Ember. You can give this to the Blacksmith, Andre of Astora in order to give him the ability to ascend your weapons further than +5.

Near the butcher's table is a secret entrance that we'll come back to later. It's behind all the crates etc.

Head down instead, into the pool. Note that you'll be slowed down significantly in the water, so dispatch each of the two Attack Dogs and the Hollow individually to avoid being killed needlessly. With them dead, climb the rock face that looks somewhat unclimbable.

Laurentius and the Bonfire

You have a choice at this point between left and right. Go left.

You'll emerge in a large room where the NPC, Laurentius of the Great Swamp, is imprisoned in a barrel. Release him by attacking the barrel, but be careful not to attack more than once as this will turn him hostile. (Note: You can also roll into the barrel to avoid this problem.) Laurentius is a Pyromancer and will return to Firelink Shrine once freed where he will sell you powerful flame spells.

Head out of the barrel area and down the corridor. Beware: another Butcher is about to drop down behind you for a fight. Kill him just like you did the first.

Proceed on down the hallway and down a set of stairs. You'll emerge in a watery tunnel.

The item on the corpse to the left sure looks tempting - but wait! Look up the ceiling and you'll see a new enemy known as the Black Slime waiting to drop on unsuspecting adventurers heads. Either snipe it with a long range attack or get close enough for it to drop and leap out of the way. When in the water the slimes can be somewhat hard to spot - keep locked on to it and chip away with your weapon before it attacks you.

When it's dead, loot the corpse for a Soul of a Nameless Soldier.

Proceed onwards into the next area. A Hollow in the distance will charge you, so kill him. There's nothing in this room worth talking about so move on the next area of the tunnel.

Wait - there's more Black Slimes on the ceiling in here, as well as a flame-wielding Hollow. Dispatch them one by one to make things easier.

The Slimes are great enemies to farm as they drop the valuable resources Large Titanite Shards and Green Titanite Shards. These components are used commonly for weapon ascension early in the game.

You can use Large Titanite Shards to ascend any +5 weapon to a +5 raw weapon or alternatively continue to ascend a +6 weapon to +10. They are also able to be used on armor, starting at about +4 or +5.

Green Titanite Shards are also used to ascend most +5 weapons to divine (faith), magic (intelligence), or fire weapons. They are used from one of these until +5, when the correct color titanite chunk is used.

The door at the end of the hall is locked, but if you've got the Master Key, use it now to reveal the isolated room with The Depths' bonfire. If you haven't got the key, you'll need to adventure further into the sewer to get it and then backtrack to this point.

Optional: Secret Route Behind Butcher's Table

Now, if you've gotten a checkpoint, it's time to deal with a rodent problem. If not, follow the 'Normal Route' section until you get the Sewer Chamber Key, open the bonfire at the end of the tunnel with the six slimes, and then consider this strategy.

Go back to where you fought the first Butcher and drop down the hole behind the table. You'll be on a raised ledge overlooking a watery location where the Sub-Boss Giant Rat is lounging. He can't get you up here, so simply snipe away at him over and over again until he dies.

Simple! There's also a Spider Shield available on the other side of the room.

The Normal Route

From the Bonfire door, head right through the doorway. You'll emerge out onto a grilled floor. See the boxes in the corner? You can break them to reveal a ladder.

If you head down it you're in another great sniper spot to deal with Giant Rat. That guy just can't catch a break can he?

Kill the Rat if you wish and climb back up the ladder. From here go forwards down the tunnel and you'll emerge into the sewers. Five Undead Rats are in the corner - deal with them all and loot the corpse for a Greataxe.

Proceed further down the corridor, dispatching the slimy piles if you wish. They aren't enemies, but they're squishy. Beware the lonesome box at the end of the corridor as a cunning rat will spring from it to attack.

Head down the stairs and kill another four rats. The nearby corpse holds a Sewer Chamber Key, your ticket to accessing the bonfire if you haven't got the Master Key. Head back up there and rest up if you haven't already.

Moving swiftly on - head down the corridor and loot the corpse for a Soul of a Nameless Soldier.

Proceed around the corner and you'll find a White Light Gate. Head on through, there's no dangerous enemies on immediate area after it.

The area immediately below you, unfortunately, isn't the same. There's a Channeler here as well as plenty of rats, so lure them up the stairs one by one to get rid of them. The Channeler should be dispatched as soon as you can, but he generally can't hit you with spells from down below the ledge you're on so isn't too much of a worry.

When they're all dead, head down the staircase and left. Keep your shield up when you near the first pair of boxes, as two Rats are about to jump you. Kill them both. The next set of boxes don't have anything in them, so breeze past and turn the corner where you'll find yet another dead dude with an item. Take his Large Titanite Shard - he won't need it anymore.

Head back to the stairwell and instead go the other way. There's another rat to kill here just before the archway, so get rid of it.

Warning: inside the next area are several not-so-obvious holes you can fall down that will drop your character down into a lower area of the labyrinth. Take care!

To avoid these holes, you're going to have to follow a set route. At the first right, make a turn, There's a rat in the distance you might feel inclined to chase - don't, as it'll lead you into a hole. Instead, take the first left. Proceed all the way down this corridor, killing the rat and looting the corpse at the end for a Soul of a Nameless Soldier.

Your next move is to turn right, where - if you haven't killed it already - you'll have to fight the Giant Rat.

Sub-Boss: Giant Rat

If you haven't used one of the previously mentioned methods of killing the rat from afar, this fight may be a bit more tricky.

The rat is extremely fast and attacks pretty relentlessly, so the best method is to use ranged attacks to take it down from the doorway where it can't follow you.

If you do insist on fighting melee-style equip your best weapon and shield (the Spider Shield is useful as it decreases poison build-up), keep your shield up and attack the Rat whenever you get the chance.

Once he's dead, loot the corpse in the corner for a Soul of a Nameless Soldier.

Honestly, It's Like a Maze In Here!

Your next move is to slide down the slope in the rats chamber. Just don't think about what might be in the water and get sliding.

This new area is home to the highly deadly enemy Basilisk. Although weak physically, these enemies will jump at you and attack with a deadly gas that causes quick Curse build-up. If the meter is fully filled you will die instantly, and when you respawn you will be inflicted with Curse, a status ailment that halves your health until you can use a Purging Stone. So yeah, watch out for basilisks. If they spew their mist, run away fast and kill them as quickly as you can.

If you do get Cursed and you don't have a Purging Stone, you're going to have to visit the Undead Merchant Female all the way back in the aqueduct near Firelink Shrine, or the merchant down in New Londo Ruins.

Also, if you are afraid of getting Cursed and don't own any Purging Stones, this section can be avoided if you do not want to risk getting Cursed and being stuck at half of your max HP, which can be detrimental in some areas, especially in the later boss fight.

Now that you've been forewarned of Basilisks, it's time to deal with one. The first is down the left-hand path, so take your time, dodge its attacks and kill it.

You may also be attacked at this point by Rats from down the other path, so kill them as well.

The main pathway in this section is down where the Rats were, but let's get some items first shall we?

Follow the path along to the left where the Basilisk was and you'll see a corpse behind a gate. You can't get there yet so head up the stairs where you'll see two more Basilisks behind a gate. If you've got a long reaching weapon at this point you can get one of them through the gate, but if you haven't, take care fighting each of them as you'll have to pass through an archway and be in a confined space.

Inside the archway is a body with a Soul of a Nameless Soldier on it. Don't collect this until the Basilisks are dead.

Proceed around the corner and you'll see another Basilisk in the distance. Lure it towards you and kill it. There's also two more Basilisks down to the left, hiding near the bridge. You can attack them from above with ranged attacks or lure them towards you to melee fight.

There's also two more Basilisks behind these ones waiting in a tunnel. Kill these then loot the nearby corpse for a Large Soul of a Nameless Soldier.

If you head into the nearby tunnel you'll then find yet another two Basilisks to dispatch. As always, avoid the mist.

Once they're dead follow the tunnel around to find the corpse you saw earlier. Loot it for the Ring of the Evil Eye. When equipped this item will restore some of your HP every time you kill an enemy.

From here, head back up the stairs and turn left, walking over the narrow pathway towards a small tunnel. Inside, watch out as there's another trapdoor in the floor. To get to the item on the other side you'll have to sprint and leap over the gap.

The corpse on the other side holds a Humanity.

Back To The Quest

With your new items in tow head back to the junction where you fought the first Basilisk and head left. Dispatch the rat waiting around the corner.

The nearby crates don't contain ambushing rats, but hit them anyway if you're feeling malicious. Keep following the corridor around, and kill another rat as you go.

Head up the stairs and you'll come to a wider area with watery sections. Be careful here - the Black Slimes are back and will try to sneak up on you through the water.

There's a total of two Slimes in the water and a further one on the ceiling. There's also two rats in this room, so make sure you take care of each enemy individually or you'll soon get swamped.

With all enemies dead, head through the partially destroyed gate to the find the merchant Domhnall of Zena. There's also a locked doorway, but there's nothing you can do with that right now.

Domhnall sells Gold Pine Resin, a valuable substance that imbues your weapon with electricity. Purchase some if you wish. He also has some unique armor and Crystal equipment for sale. Note: Crystal equipment is non-repairable.

Once you've bought all you need, venture back to the other end of the alley: on the left there's a stair leading to a door, open it, it's a shortcut to the bonfire. Head back and go right through the archway. Go up the stairs to emerge in a wide area you've been to before but you were higher up previously.

Go right out of the archway, there's nothing to the left. Go straight down the stairs, there's nothing on the upper level either.

On the next level, ignore the stairs for now and wander to the right to find a Corpse with a Heavy Crossbow and Heavy Bolt x11 waiting to be snagged.

Down the next stairwell is a White Light Gate - through here is by far the most intimidating boss you've faced so far, so equip your strongest equipment and prepare thyself for a battle.

Optional Encounter: Kirk, Knight of Thorns

If the player is Human while wandering around the Depths you will be attacked by the NPC Kirk, Knight of Thorns.

He'll spawn just after you drop off the water slide, where you fight the Basilisks.

He's a recurring enemy throughout Dark Souls and this is his first official appearance. He's relatively easy to beat - just study how he moves and try to get in for a backstab if possible.

Note: If you've already beaten the area boss and return later in Human form Kirk will not invade.

Boss Fight: Gaping Dragon

If you are human at this point make sure to summon Knight Solaire or Knight Lautrec to your side. The Gaping Dragon emerges from the bowels of the room in dramatic fashion. Although its attacks are incredibly powerful, the beast is quite slow. Use ranged attacks, particularly Heavy Soul Arrows, when the gap between the two of you is large. The best time to engage in physical attacks is directly after it charges at you.

Move out of the way of the attack and the Gaping Dragon will be stunned for a few moments. Take this opportunity to rush in and deliver a barrage of attacks. Watch out for its puke attack, it will damage your weapon's durability. With enough patience, you'll take the beast down and be rewarded with the Blighttown Key.

Alternate Approach. Make sure you buy Crystal straight sword and 2/3 Gold pine resin. Dragon is weak to lightning. Equip Crystal straight sword and apply Gold pine resin on it. Run and stay behind it, concentrate your attacks on it's tail. Wear some good armor that doesn't slow you down much and always keep your health full to survive it's tail attack if you take any. Keep you distance when it jumps. After you've caused enough damage to tail it will fall off, rewarding you with the powerful Dragon King Greataxe.

After the Boss

With the Gaping Dragon already a distant memory, head over to the glowing corpse nearby to find a Standard Helm, Hard Leather Armor, Hard Leather Gauntlets and Hard Leather Boots.

There's nothing else left of interest down in the Depths, so head back up the merchant you met previously and use your new Blighttown Key to enter possibly one of the most frustrating areas in the entire game.

We don't recommend you do that just yet though - instead you should head to the Undead Asylum once more, so make your way back to Firelink Shrine.

Dark Souls Remastered: THE DEPTHS

Descend the stairs into the Depths. This room is filled with undead, so make sure to watch your back. If you have the Rusted Iron Ring from the above optional section, now is a good time to equip it. In the lower levels of this initial area, you’ll find some dogs and a menacing Butcher. If you fall into the water in the lowest level without the Rusted Iron Ring equipped, things will get very hairy very quickly, so mind your footing.

Make sure to open the treasure chest on the lower level of this area (where you fight the butcher) to find a Large Ember, an item very important for upgrading weapons. The crates next to the chest can be destroyed to reveal a path, but we don’t want to go that way yet. Instead, head back down into the water.

You can climb the nearby debris up and through a hole in the wall to escape the watery section. As soon as you do, turn left and enter a room full of barrels. Laurentius of the Great Swamp is trapped inside one of these barrels. Roll into his barrel (do not attack) to set him free. Like Griggs, Laurentius will return to Firelink Shrine. There he sells Pyromancy flames and can upgrade your Pyromancy flame, so he’s obviously very important to both aspiring and established Pyromancers.

Leave the barrel room and run across the hall and around the corner to the right. Go through the door and head down the stairs into some water. If you want to loot the corpse on your left, be wary of a slime which drops from the ceiling when you step under it. The sewers are filled with these things, so always keep an eye on the ceiling. As you proceed you may run into a second butcher. Continue into the next corridor, where you’ll find several more slimes. If you have Fireball, use it!

The door at the end of this corridor can be opened with the Master Key. Beyond it is a bonfire. If you do not have the Master Key, continue on (to the left) for now.

Rest up and the bonfire, kindling it if possible. Leave the bonfire room and turn right, heading down some metal stairs. Break the crates to your left to reveal a ladder. This will serve as a shortcut back to the bonfire later on. Continue past the ladder into the next sewer section. Kill the rats to the left (note that rats have the highest Humanity drop rate of any normal enemy), loot the corpse, then head in the other direction. Watch out for the lone crate to your right; a rat will hop out of it once you get close.

At the end of this path you’ll find a gate with a corpse resting against its opposite side. This corpse holds the Sewer Chamber Key, which can be used in lieu of the Master Key to reach the bonfire previously mentioned. Turn around and start heading back, only this time take the path below the short staircase. This leads to a fog door;pass through it.

You’ll encounter a sorcerer and several rats. Take out the sorcerer from above using Fireball, then clear the area. Be careful: these rats are stronger and faster than the ones you’ve encountered so far. Go all the way to the left to find a corpse holding a large Titanite shard (watch out for rats in those crates), then return to the steps and take the other path.

This next section appears like a maze, but is actually quite simple. Take the first right (pictured above), then turn left. Pillage the corpse ahead, then turn right. This leads into the room with the Giant Rat you may have noticed before. Time to take him out.

As soon as you step into his room, he’ll charge at you. Retreat back into the corridor (he cannot follow) and once he turns around, hit him with your weapon or Fireball. Continue this strategy until victory is yours. Slide down the waterfall at the other end of this room

Once you land, head left, then look down the corridor to your immediate left. This is where you encounter a basilisk for the first time. These are extremely deadly because their breath causes curse, which essentially equates to death. Try to kill it quickly, as there are also large rats in the area.

From where the basilisk stood, take the nearby stairs up. This path is optional, but it leads to the Ring of the Evil Eye, which absorbs HP from enemies you defeat. Just watch out for the many basilisks that guard the area. Remember these two things: kill them quickly, and don’t get surrounded. Once you’re done in this area, return to the spot where you dropped off the waterfall and take the other route.

If you are in human form, the Black Phantom Kirk Knight of Thorns will appear and attack. Don’t be too worried; he’s quick, but fairly weak. A few backstabs will do the trick. He drops one Humanity and either the Spiked Shield, a fun little toy that causes enemies to bleed, or the Barbed Straight Sword, which also causes bleeding. This won’t be the first time you run into Kirk during your playthrough…

Continue on to another large, open room containing some rats and slimes. Go through the broken gate at the end of the room to find Domhnall of Zena, a merchant. Talk to him if you wish, then run all the way to the other end of the room.

You’ll notice some stairs through a door to the left of the waterfall. Open the door at the top of these stairs and you’ll open a shortcut between this area and the bonfire. Rest up there, then return to broken gate near Domhnall.

There’s a passage to the right of the broken gate that leads up. Head right and continue until you see some stairs leading down. Explore this level to find a corpse holding a heavy crossbow. Look for another set of stairs leading down, but before you take them, check for Solaire’s orange summon sign. You’ll want to bring him along for the boss fight ahead. Go down the steps and through the fog door.

BOSS: GAPING DRAGON

If you don’t have the Drake Sword, using Gold Pine Resin (sold by Domhnall) to add lightning to your weapon will help in this battle. It’s important to attack the dragon’s tail first, since cutting it off grants you the Dragon King Greataxe.

This fight is relatively easy, especially if Solaire is drawing the dragon’s attention. As you try and cut off the tail, watch out for the tail swipe attack, which is largely telegraphed. Once the tail is gone, the battle becomes extremely easy.

Run far away from the dragon, far enough that it stops walking. It will slam its front end down, which signals that its about to charge. At this point, run around to its rear end. The dragon will eventually charge, but if you are running to the side, he won’t be able to track you. Once the charge stops, put your weapon in both hands and have at his tail stump. When he leaps in the air to turn around, run far away and repeat this process until the boss is defeated.

The Gaping Dragon drops the Blighttown Key, which should give you a clue as to where we’re going next. GO back to Domhnall and use the key on the big door to his right.

  1. The entry to The Depths is a door in Lower Undead Burg that you now can open with the Key to The Depths you acquired from the Capra Demon. The door is located near the base of the tower containing the lone Hollow archer.
  2. Going down the stairs, you will soon run into the first Hollow, but watch out, because there will also be another one coming from the opposite direction. Kill them both and move on to the stairs leading to a room full of tables and Hollows. Try to engage them one by one and be especially wary of those wielding a torch.
  3. Go down the next set of stairs and kill the Undead Attack Dog. Up ahead is another dog and a Butcher; try to kill the dog first and do it fast, then use your superior speed to your advantage in your fight against the brute. After you killed them both, open the chest and get the Large Ember.
  4. Turn around and head down the stairs into the shallow water. If you keep to the right wall, you will not need to fight the two Undead Attack Dogs, but you'll still have to kill the single Hollow in the corner.
  5. Leave the water by walking over the debris and enter the room to your left. Free Laurentius of the Great Swamp from the barrel by rolling against it - do not attack him or you will not be able to trade with him unless you pay for your Absolution.
  6. Leave the room and go straight ahead, but be prepared for another Butcher is lying in ambush above the door, where you just freed Laurentius. Kill her and proceed to the next room, filled with shallow water. Watch out for the Slime on the ceiling, as it will drop down if you loot the corpse and do not attack it first. Be also prepared that a Hollow could attack you here.
  7. Now, turn around, backtrack to where you fought the first Butcher, and destroy the crates in the corner, right behind the Butcher's table. Jump down into the hole and find yourself on top of a ledge, overlooking a large room and the Giant Undead Rat mini-boss. Before you engage it, you should pick up the Spider Shield, found on the other side of the ledge. You can now attack the rat by either killing it via magic and ranged attacks respectively, or quickly through a lunge attack.
  8. After you killed the rat, loot every corpse in the room, one contains the Sewer Chamber Key to the only bonfire in the area. Take notice of the "water slide" at the one end of the room, turn around and leave through the pathway on the left. Take a left turn, and another, killing the rats on your way, and jump over the hard to miss pitfall trap. Take another left corner and kill the rats, or leave them be. Turn around and go up the stairs, but watch out, because a hostile rat will jump out of the crate up ahead and attack you.
  9. Continuing onward, you will run into a dead end with five rats and a corpse. Opposite to it is an open pathway, go through, and find yourself in a cage-like room, looking into the place where you just killed the Giant Undead Rat. Destroying the crates in the corner will reveal a hidden ladder which leads down to a door that you will soon be able to open from the other side as a shortcut.
  10. Go up the short flight of stairs and kill the Hollow. The corridor to your right will eventually lead back to where you encountered the first Slime; the ceiling of this particular corridor is littered with them. Unlock the door to your left and rest at the bonfire. It is recommended that you revert to Human and kindle this bonfire since a boss fight is coming up soon. If you do not have enough Humanity, farm the rats in the general area for more, it should not take very long.
  11. Go back to where you jumped over the pitfall trap and jump over it again. Ignore the right turn and go straight ahead, turning left at the next intersection. Try to lure the Large Undead Rats one by one into your corridor, while trying not to be hit by Soul Arrows from the Channeler. Also be careful of the rats, since these are bigger, stronger and receive a buff from the Channeler.
  12. Once you killed them all, take care of the Channeler, who would have else interfered with your upcoming boss fight (you can enter the Fog Gate you see here, since it only leads back to the sewers from whence you came). If you go straight ahead until you reach the far end wall, you will find another corpse to pillage, but be ready to be ambushed from the first two crates on the left.
  13. Now, return to the room where you killed the Giant Undead Rat and slide down, where you previously turned around. You will take some moderate falling damage, but the most significant threat as of yet lurks behind the corner to your left: your first Basilisk. With his breath, he can inflict Curse on you, and you do not want to have that. Let him lunge at you and immediately back up around the corner. When he jumps at you again, kill him as fast as you can, so he does not get a chance to breathe his curse cloud, potentially killing you instantly. Alternatively, when you see the drop, go to the far left, you will slide down a side path and get to the other side, and will never have to go down there. Then you can quickly go to the boss area, or open up the shortcut.
  14. For now, ignore the path to your left (once you drop down the slide in the middle, there are about ten more Basilisks in this area and some items. You should come back here once you killed the boss) and go ahead. Be careful, since three Large Undead Rats are waiting for you around the corner. Also, if you are in Human form, the Black Phantom Kirk, Knight of Thorns will invade your world at this point, so be prepared. Go up the flight of stairs you come across, go straight ahead to the other side of the room, and up the next pathway. Opening the door will open up the potential way back as well as pose as a shortcut to Blighttown.
  15. Use your chance to rest at the bonfire, and restock your flask charges. Go back down from where you just came and head towards the door at the end of the room. You cannot open it just now, but you can talk to vendor Domhnall of Zena, who sells the Bottomless Box and Gold Pine Resin, the latter of which is quite helpful against the Gaping Dragon.
  16. If you are not interested in any of his goods, make a sharp turn to the right, just before you get to him, and go through the doorway. Turn right and right again, and go down the stairs you come across. At the next set of stairs, just between the stairs and the pillar, you will find Solaire's summon sign if you are Human and have talked to him at the bridge in Undead Burg. On the other side of that pillar, you will find Lautrec's summon sign if you freed him, before killing the Bell Gargoyles. You can summon both at the same time for this fight, but they are not very helpful in this fight. Remember: If you die during the boss fight, you first have to revert to Human form again, or you will not be able to summon them. Up ahead, you will find the Heavy Crossbow. Going down the last set of stairs will pit you against the Gaping Dragon. When you kill him, you will acquire the Blighttown Key, which will open the big door next to Domhnall.

Dark Souls - The Depths strategy

The Depths is an early-game area in Dark Souls you'll come to after exploring Lower Undead Burg.

The Depths

Once you head down the stairs from the Burg, you will encounter a few hollows, dispose of them and head back along the side of the stairs to get a Large Soul of Nameless Soldier. Go further down into the larger area, and be careful as there are a huge amount of Hollows, the Torch Hollows are able to rush you pretty easily, so try to lure them all out to divide and conquer.

Head down, to aggro a dog and Chef, the dog should be no trouble, but you will want to go up the stairs to the area where you fought the hollows to give you some more space. When you've cleared this out, you'll find a chest here, containing a Large Ember, which you will want to give to Andre in order to upgrade your weapons further.

Then, head back and through the water under the bottom from the stairs on the right, where you will encounter two dogs and a hollow. From here. Head left and fight another Chef.

Once you've killed it, go into the room and free the Laurentius the Pyromancer by rolling into the barrels in front of you, talk to him, and he will return to Firelink Shrine. From here, head down and through the path you didn't take. This will lead you deeper into The Depths.

Once you head into the area that is in a pool of water, check for the ceiling above you before you grab the item, as a blob will fall down and deal huge damage to you.

Once it's on the ground, it is incredibly weak to fire, so bust out your fireballs again in order to kill these. A torch hollow will be waiting to ambush you, so take that out and proceed. Walk through the corridors until you reach a wider one with another Torch Hollow laying in wait.

Before you proceed, look up to find seven of those Blobs waiting to ambush you. Kill them with Firebombs or Fireballs and proceed to take out the Hollow, and then unlock the door in front of you with the Master Key to get the first Bonfire in The Depths.

Head back out, and go down the doorway we ignored earlier. Break the boxes to reveal a ladder. Ignore it for now and come back up and proceed to the open area.

To the right there are Rats guarding a greataxe on a corpse. To the path where a Rat jumps out of a box at you, then follow the path down in order to get the Sewer Chamber Key on a Corpse.

From there, proceed down the narrow walkway and go straight forward to get a Soul of Nameless Soldier. Turn the corner and pass through the Fog Gate.

Kite the Rats to the upper platform and deal with them there, then go down and head left to kill the Channeler. Beware that on the way, Two Rats will emerge from Boxes. Once you've killed the channeler, head up and towards the corner where the channeler was in order to get a Large Titanite Shard.

From here, head towards the doorway that was to the right when we first entered. Then in the narrow walkway, take the first right, the the first left to get an item.

From here, head right to go into the room with a Giant Rat. The rat is especially vulnerable to fire, so take it out with that and surf down the waterslide.

Here, you will want to look out for a corridor containing a corpse with an item on it, head forward to fight a rat, and then forward through the broken grate, then hang left. Proceed up and you will be on the other side of the waterway.

Deal with a few of the blobs with firebombs, and then head up the stairs forward and to the right of where you came in to unlock a shortcut to the Bonfire. Then, head forward and past the arch, and to the right will be Domnhall of Zena, who will later sell boss armour to you at Firelink Shrine.

Then, head back and immediately through the path to the left to get closer to our next boss - the Gaping Dragon. Go right and down the stairs you see on the path. Head down again, and pass through the fog gate.

After the fight, head back to where you found Domnhall of Zena, and unlock the gate to Blighttown.

Dark Souls Remastered’sThe Depths are a twisting labyrinth of tunnels that lead down to a large waterway and, at the other end, Blighttown. When you first arrive, you’ll have to fight past some Hollows and Undead Attack Dogs, then you’ll face a pair of Hollow Maneater Butchers. And that’s just to get into the tunnels.

The tunnels themselves are full of Undead Rats, Slimes, and Basilisks. You’ll meet two NPCs in the area — Laurentius the pyromancer and Domhnall the merchant. Larentius will head to Firelink Shrine where he’ll sell you pyromancies. Domhnall will stay in the Depths for now and sell you unique items, armor, and some crystal weapons (he’ll eventually move to Firelink Shrine).

There’s only one bonfire in the area, but getting to it requires you pass by it, defeat a Giant Undead Rat, and retrieve a key.

Exploring the tunnels pits you against a lot of tough enemies, but there are plenty of items that make the trip worth it. The Spider Shield is a great way to prepare for your trip to Blighttown because of its poison resistance, and the Ring of the Evil Eye lets you refill your health by killing enemies.

Once you defeat this area’s boss, the Gaping Dragon, you’ll receive a key and be able to access Blighttown.
