Subaru Front Stabilizer Link Replacement with Basic Hand Tools

Bad Sway Bar Bushing Subaru Forester

Sway bar links are responsible for connecting your Subaru Forester’s sway bar to the chassis.  The job of a sway bar is to eliminate body roll by helping the tires keep better contact with the road, which improves the handling characteristics of your Forester.  If you have a bad sway bar link, your vehicle will have increased body roll and decreased handling.

Sway bars consist of three main parts, the sway bar itself, the sway bar links, and sway bar bushings.  Sway bar links connect the sway bar to the rest of the vehicle.  They use bushings to make this connection smooth.  Sway bar links and bushings can go bad.  Sway bars can crack.  Whenever this happens, there are usually noticeable symptoms.

You can still drive your Forester with bad sway bar links (as long as they are not rubbing something).  You do need to be aware that your car or truck will not handle as well as it did before.  Don’t push the vehicle hard in corners.

Subaru Forester Bad Sway Bar Link Symptoms

Subaru Forester:  Symptoms of Bad Sway Bar Links

Your Forester’s sway bar links will often make noise to let you know that something is wrong.  Other times, it’ll only be a lack of handling that will tip you off.  Here are the most common signs of bad sway bar links.  If your sway bar has a crack there will be no noise at all, just diminished handling.

1. Clunking Noise

The sway bar links will typically connect to the lower control arm on most vehicles (front end).  Your Forester may have a rear sway bar as well.  They both can make noises going down the road, but the front sway bar rattling is easier to notice when driving and much more likely to happen.

Here are the conditions in which a bad sway bar link is going to make noise.

  • While not moving at all:  Try turning your Forester’s steering wheel all the way left and all the way right.  When sway bar links are bad, there doesn’t need to be vehicle movement to get a clunking sound.  It will almost sound like a pop.  If it only rattles or shakes when braking, it may be an issue with the rotors or caliper.
  • Going over bumps:  Even if the sway bar links don’t make noise while turning the steering wheel while not moving, they can make a rattle when going over bumps.  This is most prevalent when making a turn and going over a bump at a higher speed (30+ MPH).
  • Cornering:  The sway bar’s job is to transfer the G force from the side of the vehicle that is on the outside of the corner to the side of the vehicle that is on the inside of the corner.  This improves vehicle stability and reduces body roll.  When the sway bar goes bad, it’ll be at its worst when cornering hard, like going down a twisty country road.  It probably won’t be as pronounced on the highway.

The noise coming from a bad sway bar link/bushing would be described as clunk, rattle, or squeak.

2. Poor Handling

The sway bar’s job is to minimize body roll when steering.  When the sway bar bushings/links have gone bad, it causes more weight to be placed on wheels that are on the outside of the corner.  This will cause your Forester to handle poorly.  You will also feel this body roll when you go around a corner.

Bad Sway Bar Bushings

If your Forester has bad sway bar bushings, the symptoms of bad sway bar bushings are going to feel nearly identical to that of bad sway bar links.  Really the sway bar bushings are usually the reason why the links have gone bad.  You may notice a squeaking sound coming from the wheels when you turn or go over bumps.  This indicates that there is play in the sway bar bushings.

Bad Sway Bar Bushings VS Bad Sway Bar Links

Squeak = Sway Bar Bushing
Rattle or Clunk = Sway Bar Link

A bad sway bar bushing is going to make a squeaking noise, whereas a bad sway bar link is going to make a thud or clunking sound.  The best thing to do is jack the vehicle up (use jack stands, be careful) and wiggle the sway bar.  If you feel any play, check to see where it is coming from and replace the part accordingly.

Conclusion

Bad sway bar links can be tough to pinpoint just from noise.  But, if your Subaru Forester is making crackling, rattling, or squeaky sounds while going over bumps, it very well could be a bad sway bar.  Good luck with your vehicle.

Sway link bar forester subaru

Replacing the Subaru forester sway bar end link is thankfully one of the easier repairs you will need to carry out on your Forester.

subaru forester sway bar end link

This repair can be completed within 5-10 minutes if you have the subaru forester sway bar end links ready to go. I will include a link to purchase below the YouTube Video, as well as the steps carried out.

Why Replace the Subaru Forester sway bar end links

If there is movement within your front end, or chattering/noises when going over bumps/over potholes, you may have failed end links. You will be most aware of this issue when dropping into ditches in the road such.

How to replace the Subaru Forester sway bar end link swap

Steps For Replacing the Subaru Forester sway bar end links

  1. Jack the car up by the engine on the designated jacking spot. Use a thick block of wood to distribute the weight. It’s not necessary to remove the wheels for this.
  2. Loosen the nuts on the Subaru Forester sway bar end links
  3. Remove the end links. You may need to twist them so that the threaded bolt can come out from their mounting holes on the sway bar and wheel up.
  4. Replace the sway bars with the new ones you have purchased
  5. Use your ratcheting spanner to tighten the bolt
  6. Torque the bolts with your torque wrench.
Torque wrench is not essential here, but recommended.
You can find the torque specifications from the subaru forester repair manual
  7. Lower vehicle and take for a test drive.
  8. Jack back up and check bolts are still torqued to spec.

What is the Stabilizer Bar Links all about?

You may have heard stabilizer bar links referred to as anti-roll bars or sway bar links. Their purpose is to provide a stabilizing amount of structural support to protect you when you make aggressive turns. On a hard turn, you will feel body ‘roll’ occur where the vehicle weight leans toward the outside of the turn. The stabilizer bar links keep your vehicle from rolling over or leaning too much in a turn. They also ensure proper traction on all four tires. When they work properly, these links will keep you and your car stable by redistributing the entire car’s weight. If a stabilizer link is loose, you will hear a noise from under your vehicle. If the link breaks, the noise will likely go away, but you will experience handling problems and excessive body roll.

Keep in mind:

  • Stabilizer links are often referred to as sway bar links.

How it's done:

  • The vehicle front wheels are straightened and the vehicle is lifted and supported on jack stands
  • The defective stabilizer bar links are removed
  • The new stabilizer bar links are installed
  • The vehicle is removed from jack stands
  • The vehicle is started and checked for steering stabilizer bar links operation

Our recommendation:

Stabilizer links will likely have to be replaced more than once during your vehicle’s operating life. They should be inspected on comprehensive services as well as anytime a wheel alignment or suspension work is performed. If a stabilizer bar link is loose or broken, have it replaced by one of our expert mechanics.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Stabilizer Bar Links?

  • Metallic knock from under your vehicle when driving over bumps
  • Excessive body roll when taking sharp corners or turning at high speeds

How important is this service?

The stabilizer bar links on your car prevent body roll, which in extreme circumstances can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. It is important that your sway bar links are intact, so have any broken links replaced right away.
