Destiny 2: The Best Activities To Farm Exotics

Exotics are a coveted item type in the Destiny franchise, granting powerful benefits that are usually build-enabling. Only one Exotic weapon and armor piece can be equipped at a time, but that doesn't mean you should only own one. With hundreds of Exotics to chase, you'll want a good roll for each Exotic in the game.

RELATED: Destiny 2: A Complete Guide To Armor 2.0

Fortunately, there has never been a better time in Destiny 2 to farm Exotic gear. Lost Sectors, Nightfalls, and casual alternatives have made earning Exotics easier than in past years. If you're looking to farm the best armor rolls for your Exotic armor collection, look no further. Here are the best activities for farming Exotics you should try in Destiny 2: Beyond Light.

Updated April 1st, 2021 by Charles Burgar: Season of the Chosen has given PvP players a way to obtain Exotics by playing their favorite game modes. With Shaxx now providing Masterwork materials and Exotics for Valor rank increases, Guardians in need of Exotics now have an additional way of obtaining them. We've added a new section explaining how to obtain Exotics simply by playing Crucible games.

Legend And Master Lost Sectors

For those that own Destiny 2: Beyond Light, completing Legend or Master-difficulty Lost Sectors has a high chance of granting an Exotic armor piece. Unlike Nightfalls, these Exotics drop in a specific slot—head, arms, chest, or legs. If you need a perfect roll for your Transversive Steps or ST0MP-EE5, you can run a Legend or Master Lost Sector that grants leg armor.

There are two caveats with this:

  1. These Lost Sectors must be completed solo.
  2. You'll need to wait for a Lost Sector to have a certain category of Exotic in its reward pool.

Completing a Lost Sector in a fireteam voids the Exotic armor reward. As for the second point, Legend and Master Lost Sectors rotate their Exotic drops daily. Fortunately, this order is predetermined. If a Legend Lost Sector is dropping helmets, for example, it will drop leg armor on the next day. Drops rotate in this order:

  1. Helmet
  2. Leg Armor
  3. Arms
  4. Chest Armor

If you can handle both of those caveats, you can easily complete these Lost Sectors in three to four minutes on Legend difficulty, seven to eight minutes on Master. Every two to four runs will give an Exotic on these runs, making it a fantastic Exotic farm when Nightfalls don't have a double loot week.

RELATED: Destiny 2: 10 Tips For Farming Legendary Lost Sectors

Should you attempt any of these Master Lost Sectors solo, we have a guide on efficiently beating each of them. You can find them in our complete guide here. Scroll down to the "Master Lost Sectors" section, then click on whichever Lost Sector you wish to farm.

Nightfall: The Ordeal

Nightfalls are also a fantastic way to farm Exotic armor and Masterwork materials, especially if there is a double loot week active. If you do not own the Beyond Light expansion, this will be your best means of farming Exotic gear. While Grandmaster Nightfalls guarantee an Exotic at the end if you achieve a Platinum rank, they are so difficult that most players would be better off farming Master Nightfalls instead.

Master Nightfalls are set to that season's Power Level hard cap and have a wide range of modifiers. Fortunately, the only notable ones are Match Game and the Champion types you'll be facing. Find a team, coordinate your loadouts, and prepare to grind out these missions. As long as you are at the recommended Power Level, Master Nightfalls shouldn't pose much of a threat.

RELATED: Destiny 2: Ranking Every Beyond Light Exotic From Worst To Best

Every so often, Bungie will announce on the login screen that a double Nightfall week is occurring. This means that Nightfall completions grant two rewards instead of just one, meaning you can get twice as many Exotics or additional Masterwork materials. Whenever a double loot week is ongoing, farming Nightfalls is an excellent way to farm Exotic gear. Otherwise, Nightfalls are solid but not as efficient as Legend or Master Lost Sectors.

Weekly Challenges

Weekly Challenges—turning in eight bounties, completing core activities, et cetera—have a small chance of granting an Exotic when completed. While this isn't consistent nor a repeatable farm, this gives casual players a decent chance to obtain an Exotic they don't own.

Xur And The Season Pass

Both Xur and the Season Pass can grant Exotics. Neither of these sources are farmable, but they are so accessible that every player should be aware of them.

Xur is a unique NPC that visits one of three curated locations from Friday to the weekly reset on Tuesday. He always brings an Exotic weapon, one Exotic armor piece for each class, a Fated Engram that grants a non-duplicate Exotic item, and an Exotic Cipher quest. Completing this quest lets you purchase a second non-duplicate Fated Engram or an older Exotic from the Exotic Kiosk in the Tower. Visit Xur every weekend to fill out your Exotic collection.

For more information on Xur, including spawn locations and how Fated Engrams work, consult this guide.

Season Pass Rewards

Certain ranks in the Season Pass grant Exotic Engrams. Free players get one engram, while current season owners can get up to five. Season Pass owners gain Exotic Engrams at the following ranks:

  • Rank 65 (Free): x1 Exotic Engram
  • Rank 65 (Paid): x1 Exotic Engram
  • Rank 74 (Paid): x1 Exotic Engram
  • Rank 88 (Paid): x1 Exotic Engram
  • Rank 98 (Paid): x1 Exotic Engram

Be sure to claim these whenever you can. If you didn't claim Exotic Engrams from last season, you can do so from the website. You can find a link to it here.

The Crucible

After Season of the Chosen overhauled the Crucible's reward structure, it's a surprisingly casual Exotic farm for those that enjoy Destiny 2 PvP.

The first time you reset your Valor, you will receive one Ascendant Shard. Afterward, all Valor resets for the rest of the season will grant one Exotic Engram. Earning 2,000 Valor might sound extreme, but this isn't much of an ask for avid PvP players. Daily bounties and Win Streaks will let you max out your Valor ranking in a few days, especially if a triple Valor week is active. It isn't nearly as efficient as farming Master Lost Sectors or Nightfalls, but PvP players that can win most of their games will be surprised how many Exotics they can earn this way.

What About Glory Ranks?

Glory ranks don't provide any additional rewards from Lord Shaxx, unlike Valor. However, you receive a Glory reward every time you increase your subdivision or division rank. These rewards have a chance of dropping an Exotic. It isn't uncommon to obtain an Exotic this way on your climb to Legend Glory rank. Since you can't reset your Glory rank, and the chance is random, playing Glory matches just for Exotic drops is discouraged.

DESTINY 2: How To Get Exotics In 2021 (5 Easy Methods)

One of the coolest parts of playing Destiny 2 is pursuing exotics. There are so many cool exotics you can farm in this game it’s actually the best part of the endgame grind.

If you’re new to the game and wondering how to get exotics in Destiny 2, you’re not alone. When I first started I also kept searching for ways to get some cool exotics to get the most out of my build.

Luckily, I found a few methods to get exotics without having to grind months. Here are a few methods that are worth checking out.

Buy From Xur

xur exotic 1

Xur, the mysterious exotic vendor appears randomly in Destiny 2. Every week, he appears in a different location that you need to seek out.

Xur always sells exotic weapons and gear. You can acquire them in exchange for some of your resources. As well as exchange them for an exotic engram.

xur exotic 2

Buying exotics from Xur is by far the easiest method you can use to get exotics. They only cost you resources and gives you access to the exotic instantly. There’s no grind involved for unlocking the exotic.

Check Xur Wiki page to find his location.

Complete Exotic Quests

Another easy way to get exotics is to acquire exotic quests. Exotic quests can be acquired in various ways and locations.

exotic quests

For example, if you have the Beyond Light expansion, you’ll be able to acquire the Lost Lament exotic quest from Banshee in the Tower. This quest unlocks a badass exotic sword. There are plenty more quests like that to discover.

Use Exotic Ciphers

Following the Beyond Light expansion, Destiny 2 retired some of its old content. This includes some exotic gear from the old expansions.

However, the game still allows you to acquire some of the exotics that you’ve missed in the old seasonal content and expansions.

exotic cipher 1

Exotic Ciphers are a new currency that allows you to re-acquire exotics from the past expansions. If you have an exotic cipher, you can go to the Tower to exchange it for an exotic. Keep in mind it will require additional resources.

exotic cipher 2

Exotic Ciphers can be acquired by completing Xur’s weekly quest. Or, you can level up in the season pass and get a cipher for free.

Complete the Campaigns

Last but not least, go ahead and complete the main campaigns.

If you own the Forsaken, Shadowkeep, and Beyond Light expansions, you’ll receive exotic quests right after completing each campaign.

exotic quests 2

Forsaken will give you Cayde’s Ace of Spade’s gun as an exotic quest. And Beyond Light will reward you with multiple exotic weapon quests as well.

Most of these quests are easy to complete while some require heavy grinding in both PVP and PVE missions.

Personally, I just accept every quest I get and leave them active while I do my regular bounties and weekly missions. Some quests complete themselves without an effort.

Do Raids

destiny 2 raids

Raids are extremely hard missions that require 6-8 players. There are some players who complete these missions with fewer players, but doing them solo is near impossible.

Having said that, Raids are the most effective way of getting the best exotics in Destiny 2.

It’s usually best to find a team that’s already on a raid run. You can find them through Destiny 2 Discord channels.

If you’re low-level player, there are some teams who will be willing to carry you through the raid as well. Be nice and ask.

Over To You

I hope these methods will help you acquire more exotics. If you know of any other easy ways to get exotics, do let me know.

Happy hunting, guardian!

Destiny 2 Best Farm Spots

10. The Grinding  point for Returning Players

This guide is excellent for returning players and new players jumping back into the grindathon that is the world of Destiny 2. The adventures here in this guide explain how things work and include a guide to obtaining precious exotics and armor.

9. Exotic Engram Farm

This is an excellent method to try as you brave the dangers of Destiny 2 and face its pantheon of enemies. The instructions are pretty straightforward; remember, characters like Zavala will always be dealing out bounties for your character. These should be done, and they usually result in drops of powerful gear. It takes work to level up in this game.

8. Enhancement Cores

The bread and butter of the new season, the enhancement cores are essential for players as they move forward and find themselves grinding for more powerful gear. You will be searching for enhancements from the Pit of Heresy all the way to Lost Sectors in various maps.  These PvP combat elements will be featured heavily as class-focused competition season drops.

7. New Exotic Loot Cave

The legendary loot cave from the original Destiny has finally found a worthy successor in Destiny 2. However, no haunting echoing voice refereeing to the number of souls needed to satiate Master Rahoul’s apatite appears in this one. This location has seen some modification, yet it is still an excellent place to go to farm powerful loot. Pay close attention to the bounties to fully take advantage of all the activities.

6. Exotic Farming Method – Rig on Titan

Destiny 2 Exotic Farming New Method Exotic Engram Prime Engram Farm

This location was all that and a bag of chips some months ago. The Rig in Destiny 2 has multiple lost sectors to explore, excellent enemy spawning points, and multiple champion-level enemies that, with the right equipment, will see your character climb up the ranks swiftly. While not so beefy as it once was, it is still a great area to rise quickly in power.

5. Farming Sectors on the Moon

The Hell Mouth on the Moon still is one of the best places to hunt down powerful gear. It still sees powerful enemies walk around, especially in their public events. Take the time and gather a fire team to visit.

4. Random Drop Exotics Guide

BEST Destiny 2 Exotic Farming Method In Beyond Light! | Destiny 2 Beginner Guide

One of the main features of the exotic hunting game is the random exotic world drops. Players might simply be facing low-level enemies, and then one headshot later, the player is suddenly holding onto a strange sword from some low-level henchman. The point is there are ways and places to exploit the generation of the sought-after weapons.

3. Ascendant Shards

Getting your gear to the pinnacle masterwork level requires grinding and shards... lots of shards. This handy guide shows players where to grind on various maps since the location is more prominent in some planets or even certain dungeons like the Pit.

2. Armor Farming

FAST High-Stat Armor Farm (60+) … in Under 3 Minutes! [Destiny 2 Season of the Chosen]

Exotics are great, god rolls are fantastic, but don’t forget the meat and bones. Legendary gear might sometimes drop with a higher power level than even your most potent weapon. Grind away in these locations and take advantage of those purple orbs.

1 Farming for Fast Power

Lastly, there is the whole point of farming. The endgame of grinding now is to reach the new level cap presented in Beyond Light. There are multiple ways to farm, and unless our tracking specific exotics, the world is open to players to engage and play in. Here is an option to reach that pinnacle of power faster.

Destiny 2: The 10 Best And Worst Activities To Farm Gear

As a looter shooter, Destiny 2 thrives off of having unique weapons and armor to chase. Destiny 2's Beyond Light expansion might have removed quite a few items from the loot pool, but Year 4's seasonal content drops have done a great job expanding the loot pool thus far.

Nightfalls, Crucible, Override, and Gambit are just a few activities that grant loot in Destiny 2. While playing any activity in Destiny 2 gives you loot, not all loot is created equal. Some activities take too long to complete, don't grant valuable rewards, or sometimes both. Today, we'll be going over the best and worst activities you can farm in Destiny 2 as of Season of the Lost.

Updated September 25th, 2021 by Charles Burgar: Destiny 2 has reworked a few activities in Season of the Lost. Strikes now have a reward track, Trials of Osiris saw a fundamental overhaul, and new activities have been added for Guardians to farm. We've updated this list to account for Season 15's activity changes and additions, discussing the best and worst activities you can currently farm.

10 Best: Legendary Lost Sectors

Beyond Light introduced a difficult variant of Lost Sectors. Known by most as Legendary Lost Sectors, these Lost Sector variants have a high chance of dropping Exotic armor in a specific armor slot if you complete them solo. There are two Legendary Lost Sectors available each day, one Legend and the other Master. Master Lost Sectors have a higher chance of dropping an Exotic armor piece but are significantly harder.

Target-farming Exotics has never been easier after Bungie added this activity. Guardians that want a perfect roll for their favorite Exotic helmet just need to wait for a difficult variant to appear that offers a helmet. Year 4 Exotic armor pieces are also tied to these Legendary Lost Sectors, highly encouraging players to give this playlist a chance. This is by far the best Exotic armor farm for solo players in Destiny 2.

9 Not Worth It: Astral Alignment

Season of the Lost introduced an activity called Astral Alignment. A team of six Guardians has to complete various objectives before defeating a final boss, granting two chests of loot at the end of the mission. This sounds quite similar to the Menagerie and Sundial on the surface, yet this activity lacks enticing rewards to keep players coming back each week.

This activity takes around ten minutes to complete and grants a weapon or armor piece, sometimes both. The armor drops with sub-60 stat totals, and the weapons are much easier to obtain through Focused Umbral Engrams. Unless you need Powerful Gear or the Ager's Scepter Catalyst, there's virtually no reason to play Astral Alignment. If you want a good Vulpecula or Fractathyst, go farm and focus Umbral Engrams instead.

8 Best: Nightfalls

Nightfalls are the definite way of farming Masterwork materials for your weapons and armor. Enhancement Cores, Enhancement Prisms, and Ascendant Shards can all be earned from this playlist. The higher the difficulty, the better loot you'll receive. Higher difficulties also have a high chance of granting an Exotic armor piece. Those that want to min-max their build will want to farm this activity whenever they can.

Related: Destiny 2: Every Possible Way To Obtain Ascendant Shards

Bungie frequently enables double loot weeks as well, making Nightfalls the definitive way of earning Masterwork materials. Various seasons also added fantastic Nightfall weapons for players to chase. Palindrome, Uzume FR4, and Plug One.1 are some of the best weapons in their respective archetype, giving you further incentives to farm this activity over and over again. If you can brave Grandmaster difficulty, you'll even obtain Adept variants of these guns and Adept mods you can socket into them, resulting in weapons that have stat packages well above their competition.

7 Not Worth It: Gambit

Gambit saw the same reward track update that the Crucible did a few seasons ago. It also has some great weapons to chase, yet there's one problem: its Gambit. This mode hasn't seen any substantial changes since Gambit Prime during Year 2. Beyond Light did merge Gambit and Gambit Prime together, but it didn't fix core issues with this game mode. To name a few:

  • Heavy ammo bricks don't spawn deterministically.
    • Ammo finders help, but this doesn't address the core issue.
  • Gambit was tuned around Forsaken-era power levels. Guardians are much stronger now.
  • Infamy ranks take longer to level than other ritual playlists.

All of these issues make for a gamemode that promotes snowballing and has a slower reward track than Vanguard activities or PvP. Gambit tries to make up for this with a great weapon pool, yet that's undermined by how long Gambit matches are. And even if you do get the weapon you want, each weapon has 12 potential perks in each of the final two perk columns. Good luck getting the roll you want.

6 Best: Vault Of Glass

The Vault of Glass is the only raid in Destiny 2 that gives out Pinnacle Gear currently. That alone makes it incredibly rewarding, but VoG also has some of the best weapons that Destiny 2 has seen thus far.

Fatebringer is an excellent PvE Hand Cannon and one of the only 140 RPM Kinetic Hand Cannons you can use in PvP. Corrective Measure is the only Machine Gun that can roll with Subsistence, and it's the only weapon that can use Demolitionist and Adrenaline Junkie simultaneously. Praedyth's Revenge deals more damage per second than Succession with the right roll.

You get the idea. Vault of Glass has a fantastic selection of guns. It also contains the best Spoils of Conquest farm in the game for players that want to chase god-roll weapons after their weekly completion. And if your fireteam is powerful enough to beat the Master variant, Vault of Glass provides guaranteed high-stat armor with a specific stat bias, making this the best high-stat armor farm in Destiny 2. When you combine all of these incentives with an action-packed raid with the perfect blend of combat and mechanics, you have a recipe for a great time.

5 Not Worth It: Glory Crucible

Valor Crucible has seen an overhaul in Season of the Chosen, now granting Masterwork materials and even Exotics for increasing your rank. If Valor ranks got such a massive rework, what interesting loot did Bungie give the Glory playlist?

Nothing. Season of the Splicer fixed an issue where Glory was increasing at a slow rate. Season of the Lost made some changes to third-person peeking, but those only arrived due to Season 15's Trials of Osiris rework. This mode has been neglected more than Gambit, and it has even worse rewards. Glory rank-ups do provide Powerful Gear, but this game type lacks unique weapons, armor, or other cosmetics. Unless you care about chasing Unbroken or love competitive PvP, there is virtually no reason to play the Glory Crucible playlist at this time.

4 Best: Trials Of Osiris

If you haven't played Destiny 2 recently, this might come as a complete surprise. Bungie did a fundamental overhaul to Trials of Osiris in Season of the Lost, restructuring its reward and matchmaking systems. The end result is a much healthier playlist that showers players in loot.

Related: Destiny 2: The Best Loadouts For Trials Of Osiris

We recap all of the changes in our Trials of Osiris guide, but here's a quick summary of the changes:

  • Rewards are now based on round and game wins.
    • Passages no longer track losses.
  • Saint-14 has a reward track, similar to other ritual vendors.
  • Enhancement Prisms and Ascendant Shards can now drop from Trials matches.
  • Adept weapons can be farmed from Flawless Passage wins.
  • Solos and duos can now queue into the Trials playlist.
  • Special ammo doesn't carry over between rounds.
  • Third-person peeking has been removed.

It's a significantly better PvP experience than it's ever been in Destiny 2, but it's still Trials. Players can still get stomped by experienced three-stacks, cheesy meta loadouts are still an issue, and the playlist is only active during the weekend. Even with all of those issues, the rewards from Trials are so great that all players should give this game mode a try whenever it's active. If you're a great PvP player, this is effectively a PvP variant of GM Nightfalls. Its reward structure is that good.

3 Not Worth It: Wrathborn Hunts

Season of the Hunt introduced Wrathborn Hunts to Destiny 2. Unlike previous arena activities, Wrathborn Hunts focus on tracking down a single enemy and killing them in an instanced mission. Completing a mission grants a certain item based on what Lure Mods are slotted into your Cryptolith Lure.

The issue is that Bungie locked these hunts behind a moderate degree of busywork. Not only do Guardians need to farm for Cryptolith Lure upgrades, but they also need to complete arbitrary activities to obtain charges to complete a hunt. Players can only do five hunts sequentially before they need to farm more charges. Charging your lure has different objectives that rotate daily, ranging from getting precision kills to completing Gambit matches. Even your reward options are randomly generated with every hunt. Want to farm a Deafening Whisper? You better hope you get that option after every hunt.

If the time investment and RNG weren't enough, most of the weapons and armor tied to this activity are subpar when compared to current offerings — Deafening Whisper being the main exceptions.

2 Best: Prophecy

Similar to the Vault of Glass raid, the Prophecy dungeon is the only dungeon in Destiny 2 that can be farmed. Players can still earn reissued, non-sunset gear from the Shattered Throne and Pit of Heresy dungeons, but they can't be farmed like the Prophecy dungeon.

Your first completion of an encounter grants an item you have yet to receive. Subsequent encounter completions will offer duplicate items until the next weekly reset, allowing you to farm certain encounters for weapons rolls or high-stat armor. Nearly every weapon in this dungeon is excellent, and armor almost always drops with high stats. Unlike the raid, you can even solo this dungeon if you have the right gear. For most players, this is the best source of high-stat armor you can repeatedly farm that doesn't require a raid team.

1 Not Worth It: Planetary Activities

Planetary activities include public events, standard Lost Sectors, Adventures, and Patrol missions. Planet-exclusive activities, such as the Dreaming City's Blind Well and the Moon's Altars of Sorrow, are excluded from this entry; those are usually worth doing.

All of these activities offer a small chunk of Glimmer and a few Rares, infrequently rewarding a Legendary world drop. The days of farming public events for Exotics are long gone. You would be better off spending that time elsewhere.
