Earning Rewards

This card earns two points per dollar on all purchases. When redeemed for deposit into a qualifying Fidelity account this is equivalent to 2% cash back. There are no spending limits or other restrictions on reward earnings.

Redeeming Rewards

You can redeem points by direct deposit into an eligible Fidelity account for 2% cash back in any amount at any time. A minimum of 2,500 points must be accrued to for redemption.

Eligible Fidelity accounts include most non-retirement accounts as well as Fidelity IRAs, HSAs, Charitable Giving accounts, and the 529 College Savings Plan account. One option for non-Fidelity clients is the Fidelity Cash Management Account, an alternative to a traditional checking account. The Cash Management Account is FDIC-insured and offers ATM fee reimbursement worldwide.

You can redeem points for travel or merchandise at an effective rate of 1%. These reward offers begin at 2,500 points. Points are redeemed through the Fidelity Rewards Center. Because this earnings rate is half the value of cash back, it’s best to set up redemption to a Fidelity account to ensure you get the full 2% value on your rewards.

Rewards Potential

The flat 2% cash back earnings of the Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature card makes calculating potential rewards easy. For people who put all of their expenses on this card, each year the 2% cash back rate will return $500 or more in rewards.

To arrive at this number, Forbes Advisor uses data from various government agencies in order to determine both baseline income and spending averages across various categories. The 70th percentile of wage-earning households brings in $100,172 annually and has $52,820 in standard expenses. Assuming 50% of such expenses are charged to this card, total annual card spending would be $26,410. Thus, the 2% cash back rate of the Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature would generate $528 in cash back for this household.

Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature Card rewards

Cardholders with a qualifying Fidelity investment account can earn unlimited 2% cash back on all eligible spending, with no categories or limits on reward points earned. They can then put that cash directly back into the market.

Every eligible $1 spent equals 2 Reward Points, which don't expire. Points can be deposited in up to five qualifying Fidelity accounts at once. Eligible accounts include most nonretirement accounts as well as the following:

  • Traditional IRA
  • Roth IRA
  • Rollover IRA
  • Fidelity Charitable® Giving Account®
  • Fidelity HSA®
  • Fidelity®-managed 529 College Savings Plan accounts

The 2% cash-back rewards value applies only to the points you redeem for a deposit into an eligible Fidelity account. You can choose to redeem your points for other rewards such as travel, merchandise, gift cards, and/or statement credit, but the redemption value could possibly be less.

Using data from the data location firm Esri, CNBC Select estimates that the average American spends about $1,844 in retail purchases per month (see our methodology). Using Fidelity's cash-back calculator, charging $1,800 per month to your Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature card could translate to $432 cash back in a year and $19,312 in your investment portfolio over 20 years.

Our methodology

To determine which credit cards offer the best value, CNBC Select analyzed popular credit cards available in the U.S. We compared each card on a range of features, including rewards, welcome bonus, introductory and standard APR, balance transfer fee and foreign transaction fees, as well as factors such as required credit and customer reviews when available. We also considered additional perks, the application process and how easy it is for the consumer to redeem points.

CNBC Select teamed up with location intelligence firm Esri. The company's data development team provided the most up-to-date and comprehensive consumer spending data based on the 2019 Consumer Expenditure Surveys from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. You can read more about their methodology here.

Esri's data team created a sample annual budget of approximately $22,126 in retail spending. The budget includes six main categories: groceries ($5,174), gas ($2,218), dining out ($3,675), travel ($2,244), utilities ($4,862) and general purchases ($3,953). General purchases include items such as housekeeping supplies, clothing, personal care products, prescription drugs and vitamins, and other vehicle expenses.

Taking this annual budget of $22,126 and dividing it into monthly categories, CNBC Select estimates that the average American monthly spend is $1,843.83.

CNBC Select used this budget to estimate how much the average consumer would save over the course of a year, two years and five years, assuming they would attempt to maximize their rewards potential by earning all welcome bonuses offered and using the card for all applicable purchases. All rewards total estimations are net the annual fee.

While the five-year estimates we've included are derived from a budget similar to the average American's spending, you may earn a higher or lower return depending on your shopping habits.

Fidelity® Rewards Visa Signature® Card

We may change APRs, fees, and other Account terms in the future based on your experience with Elan Financial Services and its affiliates as provided under the Cardmember Agreement and applicable law.

1. You will earn 2 Points per dollar in eligible net purchases (net purchases are purchases minus credits and returns) that you charge. Account must be open and in good standing to earn and redeem rewards and benefits. Upon approval, refer to your Program Rules for additional information. You may not redeem Reward Points, and you will immediately lose all of your Reward Points, if your Account is closed to future transactions (including, but not limited to, due to Program misuse, failure to pay, bankruptcy, or death). Reward Points will not expire as long as your Account remains open. Certain transactions are not eligible for Reward Points, including Advances (as defined in the Agreement, including wire transfers, travelers checks, money orders, foreign cash transactions, betting transactions, lottery tickets and ATM disbursements), Annual Fee, convenience checks, balance transfers, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, overdraft advances, interest charges, fees, credit insurance charges, transactions to fund certain prepaid card products, U.S. Mint purchases, or transactions to purchase cash convertible items. You may contact Elan Financial Services Customer Service at the toll-free phone number located on the back of your credit card and provide them with your eligible Fidelity® account (s) number. 2. Simply select the “Manage Reward Points” hyperlink from the credit card snapshot page on and follow the easy steps. You may also watch a brief video that describes the linking process on the credit card snapshot page also found on Please note that automatic redemptions will occur on a monthly basis as long as you have reached the point redemption threshold of 2,500 Points.

If you can't find your credit card account online, here are a few possible reasons:

  • Your Social Security number (SSN) and/or date of birth don't match between Elan's and Fidelity's records
  • Your account is hidden in your portfolioLog In Required; view the accounts list, select Customize, and make sure the box is unchecked
  • You aren't the card owner; have the card owner call Elan Cardmember Service to discuss options

Understand my payment options

There are a few ways to make credit card payments:

  • Use Elan's payment services: AutoPay or Make a Payment, or

  • Set up third-party payments on your bank's or another financial service's website, or
  • Call Elan Cardmember Service, or
  • Mail a check to Elan

If you're using Bill Pay or another payment method, rather than Elan's payment services, please make your payment to Elan Financial Services.

Add payment accounts using Elan's payment service

  • Under Payment tab, select Make a Payment or AutoPay
  • Follow the steps to add a payment account

Note: These steps only set up your payment account; you are not making a payment.

After you've added the payment account, select the Payment tab to proceed to AutoPay or Make a Payment.

Use Elan's payment services: AutoPay or Make a Payment

After you add a payment account, you can make a one-time payment or set up automatic monthly payments. On your Credit Card SnapshotLog In Required, under Credit Card Management:

  • Select AutoPay and the Payment tab displays

    • Fraud Alerts are notifications sent by our fraud department via text messages or phone calls to alert you to suspicious activity on your account.

Set up fraud alert text notifications for suspicious activity

From your Credit Card SnapshotLog In Required, select Set Up alerts in the credit card management section, then select the Fraud Alerts tab:

  • Select Update Contact Information
  • On the Update Contact Information page, scroll to the phone number section
  • Enter your text-enabled cell phone number to confirm you'd like to receive fraud alert text notifications

Fraud alerts notifications enable you to receive text messages or phone calls to alert you of suspicious activity on your account.1

Note: Fraud Alerts notifications are not the same as Account Alerts, but they can be used together to track your card's activity.

Report unauthorized transactions or a lost or stolen card

From your Credit Card SnapshotLog In Required, select Services, then select Report Card Lost or Stolen. The online experience will guide you through the process and provide information and instructions.

Set up or manage travel notifications

From your Credit Card SnapshotLog In Required, select Account Services and then select Travel Notification:

  • Enter your trip dates and the state or country you'll visit
  • Your list of upcoming trips displays on the page
  • You can also add another destination or trip
  • If your plans change, you can delete travel notifications

Add an authorized user on my card

From your Credit Card SnapshotLog In Required, select Account Services and then select Add an Authorized User:

  • You should receive the card for the new authorized user within 10 days
  • Elan sends the authorized user's card to the primary account holder's address

The Authorized User is authorized to make purchases on an account, but has no legal or financial responsibility for the account.

Note: The joint owner is the person authorized to use the card on the account and has the same legal and financial responsibility as the applicant/owner.
