Disclaimer

This page will be a rough outline of the bosses and mechanics in Battle of Dazar'alor (BoD). This page will focus primarily on how a Fire Mage can optimize its performance on the raid bosses in BoD, and not on an actual raid strategy for the bosses. For full raid strategies and mechanics, we suggest you check out our Battle of Dazar'alor page. Initially, this page will focus on Heroic mode and lower, however, as more bosses are being killed on Mythic, the guide will also include optimizations for Mythic bosses.

Fire Mage in Battle of Dazar'alor (BoD)

Battle of Dazar'alor has a fair amount of mechanics that require high burst DPS, which Fire Mage is good at. There is also a lot of mobility required, which Fire is great at dealing with. Overall, Fire Mage is looking to be a great spec for Battle of Dazar'alor.

Champion of the Light

Full Champion of the Light Strategy Guide

We advise you to use the following talents against Champion of the Light.

4.1.

Tips

This fight is fairly straightforward for a Fire Mage, and does not have a whole lot of mechanics to optimize. The main thing to keep in mind is to not hit the boss when the boss has Seal of Reckoning IconSeal of Reckoning up, and to not kill any adds while the boss has Seal of Retribution IconSeal of Retribution up.

Aside from that, you should make sure you do not position yourself between the boss and the adds, so you do not have to move to dodge the Wave of Light IconWave of Light. This is especially important when you use Rune of Power IconRune of Power.

If the boss has many Zealotry IconZealotry stacks and casts Judgment: Reckoning IconJudgment: Reckoning, you should use Ice Block IconIce Block, as it will do a lot of damage.

Lastly, when you are about to use all your cooldowns, make sure you are in range of both the boss and adds, so when the boss switches between Judgments, you will be in range to swap to the opposite target without losing any DPS uptime.

5.

Grong

Full Grong Strategy Guide

We advise you to use the following talents against Grong, the Revenant / Grong, the JungleLord.

Rune of Power IconRune of Power should yield higher DPS on this fight, but there are a fair number of mechanics that can force you to move, so if you end up having to move out of your Rune too often, you should consider Incanter's Flow IconIncanter's Flow.

5.1.

Tips

This fight works exactly the same for both Alliance and Horde players, but every ability has a different name for each faction. Because of this, whenever any ability name is used in this guide, we will name both the Horde and Alliance versions.

If the boss ever reaches 100% Rage / Death Energy, use Ice Block IconIce Block, as this will do extreme amounts of damage. If the strategy is done properly, this should never happen, but if it does happen, be ready to use defensives.

To avoid being feared when Ferocious Roar IconFerocious Roar is cast, you have to stay near someone (within 5 yards). Your best bet is to stay with someone who has a similar playstyle as you. In general, being with another Mage works great, because you both have the same mobility and defensive utility. You should both use Shimmer IconShimmer to get away from the Reverberating Echo IconReverberating Echo / Deathly Echo IconDeathly Echo to lose as little time as possible from movement.

6.

Jadefire Masters

Full Jadefire Masters Strategy Guide

We advise you to use the following talents against Jadefire Masters.

This quite can be quite frantic, which can make Rune of Power IconRune of Power hard to use without a lot of practice on the fight. Choose between Rune of Power and Incanter's Flow IconIncanter's Flow depending on your level of comfort on the fight.

6.1.

Tips

Fire Mages are very good at popping the Magma Traps that spawn around the room. You can take them by walking into one and using Shimmer IconShimmer instantly as it explodes. If you do it correctly, you will not fly much into the air at all, because of Shimmer. Even if you have already taken one, and gotten the debuff which makes you take 100% more damage from Magma Traps, you can still take an additional one. This combo however is trickier and requires very quick reactions, or a macro. You should aim yourself towards one of the Magma Traps, and then Shimmer into it. While the animation of Shimmer is happening, you need to Ice Block IconIce Block. This will get rid of the Magma Trap without taking any damage or getting knocked into the air. The macro below makes it much easier, as you can simply aim towards the trap, and press the macro.

  • #showtooltip
  • /cast Shimmer
  • /cast Ice Block

Make sure you keep stacks of Shimmer IconShimmer ready for when the bosses reach 60 Energy, so you can#@ quickly get through the maze to start damaging the Ice Wall.

Make sure you save a Rune of Power IconRune of Power charge and potentially Meteor IconMeteor and/or Combustion IconCombustion for when the Mage casts its fire shield, so you can burn the shield quickly and interrupt the Pyroblast the boss casts.

7.

Opulence

Full Opulence Strategy Guide

We advise you to use the following talents against Opulence.

This fight has a large amount of mechanics that require you to move a lot of the time. Because of this, Rune of Power IconRune of Power is only worth considering if you are on the side without the Flames of Punishment IconFlames of Punishment (left side). Otherwise, you should take Incanter's Flow IconIncanter's Flow.

7.1.

Tips

7.1.1.

Contructs Phase

This phase is all about minimizing movement as much as possible. Both sides have quite a lot of movement, but the right side has more movement. If possible, you should try to get yourself assigned to the left side.

On the left side, you can Shimmer IconShimmer to place Volatile Charge IconVolatile Charge on top of other lightning orbs where it is about to expire, and instantly Shimmer out again.

On the right side, Flames of Punishment IconFlames of Punishment is the most punishing mechanic in terms of DPS loss. It is risky to try to do Shimmer IconShimmer moves to try and dodge the cones, so your best bet is to just run with the group and use Scorch IconScorch and instants during this movement.

7.1.2.

Boss Phase

If you get Liquid Gold IconLiquid Gold, you should Shimmer IconShimmer to the edge of the room right before it times out, and then either Shimmer or move back in.

If you get Coin Shower IconCoin Shower, you can Ice Block IconIce Block the debuff to completely absorb this mechanic and avoid a lot of raid damage.

8.

Conclave of the Chosen

Full Conclave of the Chosen Strategy Guide

We advise you to use the following talents against Conclave of the Chosen.

This fight, as with most fights in Battle of Dazar'alor, has quite a lot of mechanics that will require you to move to or from certain areas, which can make Rune of Power IconRune of Power hard to use optimally. Depending on your comfort level of the fight, you can choose between Rune of Power IconRune of Power and Incanter's Flow IconIncanter's Flow.

8.1.

Tips

On the PTR, it was possible to spellsteal the Gift of Wind IconGift of Wind buff. It is unsure if this is intended or not, but if it still works on live servers, it is a huge DPS increase to spellsteal this buff, so make sure you communicate with your group that you want to spellsteal it, so no one else dispells it.

Make sure if anyone gets the the Crawling Hex IconCrawling Hex debuff to not dispell them instantly, but to wait until they are out of the group.

Keep an eye on your boss mod timers for Gonk's Wrath IconGonk's Wrath, to make sure you save a charge of Rune of Power IconRune of Power and/or Combustion IconCombustion / Meteor IconMeteor when they spawn so you can burn them down very quickly.

Use Shimmer IconShimmer to get away from the group when you get targeted by Kimbul's Wrath IconKimbul's Wrath or Akunda's Wrath IconAkunda's Wrath.

9.

King Rastakhan

Full King Rastakhan Strategy Guide

We advise you to use the following talents against King Rastakhan.

9.1.

Tips

Keep an eye on your boss timer for Zombie Dust Totem IconZombie Dust Totem and make sure you have some Fire Blast IconFire Blast charges and/or a Rune of Power IconRune of Power charge available for it so you can quickly burn them down.

If you are assigned to go into the death realm when King Rastakhan reaches 60% Health, you need to make sure you have all your cooldowns available when he reaches 60%, so when you get teleported into the death realm, you can maximize your DPS on Bwonsamdi.

10.

High Tinker Mekkatorque

Full High Tinker Mekkatorque Strategy Guide

We advise you to use the following talents against High Tinker Mekkatorque.

10.1.

Tips

Use Shimmer IconShimmer to avoid Crash Down IconCrash Down if you are in the targeting circle instead of moving out to avoid losing DPS. This ability always happens after Blast Off IconBlast Off so make sure you do not use Rune of Power IconRune of Power during Blast Off, as it is quite likely you will have to Shimmer out of your Rune of Power afterwards.

11.

Stormwall Blockade

Full Stormwall Blockade Strategy Guide

We advise you to use the following talents against Stormwall Blockade.

11.1.

Tips

11.1.1.

Sister Katherine

Voltaic Flash IconVoltaic Flash has a lot of different combos, but most of them can be fully dodged just with usage of Shimmer IconShimmer and a couple of instants, since they all alternate positions in some for or another. The general idea is to Shimmer out of the path of the first set of orbs, and then after that one is done, use Shimmer to get back to your previous spot, which is usually a safe spot after the first set of orbs.

When targeted with Crackling Lightning IconCrackling Lightning, quickly Shimmer IconShimmer away from other people.

Make sure you keep an eye on your boss-mod timers for Electric Shroud IconElectric Shroud, so you can save charges of Fire Blast IconFire Blast and/or a Rune of Power IconRune of Power charge for it to quickly burst the shield down.

11.1.2.

Brother Joseph

When targeted by Tempting Song IconTempting Song, you have a brief moment to get as far away as possible before it starts channeling. Make sure you use Shimmer IconShimmer to get as far away as possible.

Make sure you keep an eye on your boss-mod timers for Electric Shroud IconElectric Shroud, so you can save charges of Fire Blast IconFire Blast and/or a Rune of Power IconRune of Power charge for it to quickly burst the shield down.

11.1.3.

Laminaria

You can solo soak Ire of the Deep IconIre of the Deep to reduce raid damage, by using Ice Block IconIce Block.

12.

Lady Jaina Proudmoore

Full Lady Jaina Proudmoore Strategy Guide

We advise you to use the following talents against Lady Jaina Proudmoore.

12.1.

Tips

12.1.1.

Phase 1

Use Shimmer IconShimmer during Avalanche IconAvalanche to get rid of as many Searing Pitch IconSearing Pitch patches as possible.

12.1.2.

Intermission 1

Mages can get to Jaina quite quickly compared to other classes to interrupt her, but it is very risky since you can easily Shimmer IconShimmer into mechanics and get too high Chilling Touch IconChilling Touch stacks and get Frozen Solid IconFrozen Solid. You can, however, use Ice Block IconIce Block to remove the Chilling Touch stacks, so when you get to high stacks and you still have not found Jaina, you should use Ice Block.

12.1.3.

Phase 2

Use Shimmer IconShimmer to get away from the group when targeted by Broadside IconBroadside or Siegebreaker Blast IconSiegebreaker Blast. You can also use Shimmer to get to the Barrels (if/when assigned to do so) when you get targeted with Broadside.

12.1.4.

Intermission 2

Make sure you have some or most of your DPS cooldowns available for the second intermission, since it is a tight DPS check.

12.1.5.

Phase 3

Since there are no ways to remove Chilling Touch IconChilling Touch stacks in this phase, it is a big advantage if you managed to keep Ice Block IconIce Block for this phase, so you can break Frozen Solid IconFrozen Solid once.

A stack of Rune of Power IconRune of Power and / or Meteor IconMeteor should be saved for Prismatic Image IconPrismatic Image so you can quickly burst it down.

Fire Mage Overview

The Fire specialization is fantastic at delivering both burst and sustained damage on a variety of fight types. Fire can cleave on stacked targets, gaining overall damage without sacrificing much single-target damage. It can also do good AoE damage on stacked enemies and has uncapped AoE DPS. Like all Mage specializations, Fire has high mobility and is fantastic at doing encounter specific jobs and baiting mechanics. Between Blink IconBlink, Hot Streak IconHot Streak, and Scorch IconScorch, high movement encounters have minimal impact on Fire's overall output.

Leveling a Fire Mage

If you want to play a Fire Mage, but currently do not have one at max level, you can check out our leveling guide for tips on your journey.

Fire Mage Leveling Guide

Once you reach max level, it can be somewhat overwhelming to completely change the way you play by suddenly implementing a large number of addons in a short space of time, especially if they have a heavy visual impact on your UI. We recommend using some of the more basic addons recommended on our Addons page below while leveling, so that you have more time to get used to them during the easier phases of playing your class.

5.

Basics of Fire Mage Gameplay

Fire Mage is all about chaining critical strikes to trigger Hot Streak IconHot Streak. The main way to do this is by converting Heating Up IconHeating Ups into Hot Streak via Fire Blast IconFire Blast. Most of your time spent will be casting Fireball IconFireball and converting the critical strikes from that via Fire Blasts into Hot Streaks, and using those on Pyroblast IconPyroblast.

Fire Mages are one of the few specs in the game that have spells that can be cast during other casts. Fire Blast IconFire Blast is the main spell you will be casting during other spells, but Fire's main DPS cooldown, Combustion IconCombustion can also be cast during other spells.

Combustion IconCombustion is Fire's major DPS cooldown, which allows for a period of heavy burst by making all your spells critically strike, causing a large amount of Hot Streak IconHot Streaks in a short period of time.

If you are an absolute beginner to the spec, but would like to learn the basic fundamentals of the class, recommend looking through the Spell Summary first, as well as the Easy Mode page linked below.

Fire Mage in Shadowlands

With the launch of Shadowlands, Mages get access to various new systems that are very important to master to be able to perform well.

The most important new system is the Covenant system, which comes with the new Soulbind and Conduit systems. These systems have enormous impact on your DPS, and are hard to change between, so picking the correct one is a big choice. Go to our Covenant, Soulbinds and Conduit page below to read which of each to pick.

Fire Mage Best Covenants, Soulbinds, and Conduits

Another important system that was added was the Legendary system. You can only equip one Legendary at a time, and the amount of Legendaries you can get is gated, so making the correct one for the content you are doing is important. On the page below we go over what Legendaries to craft for what situation, and for what item slot to craft them, and in what order.

Fire Mage Viability in the Current Patch

Fire is currently performing worst out of the Mage specs when it comes to raiding in Season 2. However, it is only slightly behind the other specs, so for people more comfortable at Fire than the other specs, Fire is likely to perform better than the other specs. In Mythic+, it is currently struggling at lower uncoordinated keys, but at the highest level of keys in well-coordinated groups it is effectively tied with the other specs, even overtaking them in some scenarios.

  1. Levels 10 & 11 — 2 points in Elemental Precision IconElemental Precision
  2. Levels 12 to 16 — 5 points in Improved Fireball IconImproved Fireball
  3. Level 17 — 1 point in Flame Throwing IconFlame Throwing
  4. Levels 18 & 19 — 2 points in Impact IconImpact

Elemental Precision IconElemental Precision allows you hit enemies much more reliably, which will increase your damage output and reduce your melee damage taken, as it is more likely enemies will die before reaching you. Improved Fireball IconImproved Fireball is a good damage increase with Fireball IconFireball, although it comes at the cost of Mana. Flame Throwing IconFlame Throwing increases Fire spell range, allowing you to open on enemies from a longer distance, and finally Impact IconImpact allows you to sometimes stun enemies with your Fire spells.

  1. Levels 20 to 22 — 3 points in Impact IconImpact
  2. Levels 23 & 24 — 2 points in Burning Soul IconBurning Soul
  3. Levels 25 & 26 — 2 points in Incinerate IconIncinerate
  4. Levels 27 to 29 — 3 points in Ignite IconIgnite

Finish maximizing Impact IconImpact and get Burning Soul IconBurning Soul and Incinerate IconIncinerate, which provide cast time pushback resistance and additional critical strike with some of your spells, respectively. Afterwards, get Arcane Subtlety IconArcane Subtlety and Arcane Concentration IconArcane Concentration, to pierce enemy resistances and reduce resists on your Arcane spells (such as Polymorph IconPolymorph). Finally, get two points into Arcane Concentration IconArcane Concentration for its Mana-saving properties.

  1. Levels 50 to 52 — 3 points in Arcane Concentration IconArcane Concentration
  2. Level 53 — 1 point in Arcane Resilience IconArcane Resilience

1.2.

Rotation for leveling up as a Single Target Fire Mage

  1. Cast Arcane Intellect IconArcane Intellect and Frost Armor IconFrost Armor if you miss their buffs.
  2. Cast Arcane Intellect IconArcane Intellect and Ice Armor IconIce Armor if you miss their buffs.
  3. Cast Arcane Intellect IconArcane Intellect and Mage Armor IconMage Armor if you miss their buffs.
  4. Cast Fireball IconFireball as your main attack.

Utility skills, such as Frost Nova IconFrost Nova, and AoE skills, such as Arcane Explosion IconArcane Explosion should be used to keep enemies away from you or finish off packs of enemies, as required.

Since you can make your own food and water with Conjure Food IconConjure Food and Conjure Water IconConjure Water, you will be able to more than make up the gold spent on these skills, by saving on vendor food and water. It is also possible to gain some gold on the side by selling your conjured supplies to other players.

1.3.

Summary of Trainer Skills for Single Target Fire Mage

  • At Level 1, as soon as you have the copper, buy Arcane Intellect IconArcane Intellect. It provides a significant Intellect boost, that lasts for 30 minutes.
  • At Level 4, buy Conjure Water IconConjure Water. Conjure Water allows you to create free water, to use while leveling up.
  • At Level 6, buy Conjure Food IconConjure Food and Rank 2 Fireball IconFireball. Conjure Food allows you to create free food, to use while leveling up.
  • At Level 8, buy Polymorph IconPolymorph. Polymorph allows you to take one enemy out of combat for 20 seconds, which is handy when dealing with multiple enemies. Keep in mind only one enemy can be polymorphed at a time.
  • At Level 10, buy Rank 2 Conjure Water IconConjure Water, Rank 2 Frost Armor IconFrost Armor and Frost Nova IconFrost Nova. Frost Nova freezes nearby enemies for 8 seconds, allowing you to flee or regain distance on them before re-engaging.
  • At Level 12, buy Rank 2 Conjure Food IconConjure Food, Rank 3 Fireball IconFireball and Slow Fall IconSlow Fall. Slow Fall slows your falling speed, which is handy to avoid fall damage, enabling shortcuts that would lead to death, otherwise.
  • At Level 14, buy Arcane Explosion IconArcane Explosion, Rank 2 Arcane Intellect IconArcane Intellect. Arcane Explosion will be your main AoE spell. Also, as it is instant, you can also use it to finish off weakened enemies, but beware its high Mana cost.
  • At Level 18, buy Remove Lesser Curse IconRemove Lesser Curse and Rank 4 Fireball IconFireball. Remove Lesser Curse is a niche, yet sometimes invaluable spell that will allow you to remove curse effects.
  • At Level 20, buy Blink IconBlink, Rank 3 Conjure Water IconConjure Water, Rank 3 Frost Armor IconFrost Armor and Evocation IconEvocation. At this level, you can also start to buy the teleport spells for each major city, such as Teleport: Stormwind IconTeleport: Stormwind (Alliance) or Teleport: Orgrimmar IconTeleport: Orgrimmar (Horde), at their respective portal trainers. Blink allows you to teleport forward every 15 seconds, which can be useful in a variety of situations. It also clears stun and root effects. Evocation rapidly regenerates your Mana over 8 seconds, with an 8-minute cooldown.
  • At Level 22, buy Rank 2 Arcane Explosion IconArcane Explosion, Scorch IconScorch and Rank 3 Conjure Food IconConjure Food. Scorch is a quick casting Fire spell that does less DPS than Fireball IconFireball, overall, but is useful to finish enemies or in situations where you are getting spell pushback / interrupted.
  • At Level 24, buy Counterspell IconCounterspell and Rank 5 Fireball IconFireball. Counterspell instantly interrupts and prevents spells of the interrupted school from being cast for 10 seconds, with a 30-second cooldown. Very useful to disable caster enemies.
  • At Level 28, buy Rank 3 Arcane Intellect IconArcane Intellect, Rank 2 Scorch IconScorch and Conjure Mana Agate IconConjure Mana Agate. Conjure Mana Agate is the first of four spells that create Mana Gems that you can use during combat to instantly replenish part of your Mana pool. These items share a 2-minute cooldown, and are consumed on use.
  • At Level 30, buy Rank 3 Arcane Explosion IconArcane Explosion, Rank 4 Conjure Water IconConjure Water, Ice Armor IconIce Armor, Rank 6 Fireball IconFireball and Teleport: Darnassus IconTeleport: Darnassus (Alliance) or Teleport: Thunder Bluff IconTeleport: Thunder Bluff (Horde) at each respective city's portal trainers. Ice Armor is just a slightly stronger Frost Armor IconFrost Armor, and should be used as such.
  • At Level 32, buy Rank 4 Conjure Food IconConjure Food.
  • At Level 34, buy Rank 3 Scorch IconScorch and Mage Armor IconMage Armor. Mage Armor allows 30% of your Mana regeneration to continue while casting, and gives you some general magic resistance. Considering you should not be getting hit by enemy melee attacks, this will be more helpful than Frost Armor IconFrost Armor.
  • At Level 36, buy Rank 7 Fireball IconFireball.
  • At Level 38, buy Rank 4 Arcane Explosion IconArcane Explosion and Conjure Mana Jade IconConjure Mana Jade.
  • At Level 40, buy Rank 4 Scorch IconScorch and Rank 5 Conjure Water IconConjure Water. At this level, you can also start to buy the portal spells for each major city, such as Portal: Stormwind IconPortal: Stormwind (Alliance) or Portal: Orgrimmar IconPortal: Orgrimmar (Horde), at their respective portal trainers.

Fire Mage Tier 5 Best in Slot List

This is a list of gear that is considered to be the best in each slot.

The list below is following the stat priority of Hit until cap > Spell Damage > Spell Haste > Spell Crit and assumes no Hit chance raid buffs. You can see an explanation for this priority on our stats page for Fire Mage below.

Fire Mage PvE Stats

The items on the list for Tier 5 come from TBC dungeons and professions. As world boss loot is very hard to get for most players, this set does not include any world boss loot. It also uses only crafted gems.

If you are already a Tailor and are willing to invest a lot of gold, you may level Enchanting after crafting Boots of Blasting IconBoots of Blasting. Doing so will allow you to gain a slight DPS increase through Enchant Ring - Spellpower IconEnchant Ring - Spellpower at a hefty price. This setup uses Soul-Eater's Handwraps IconSoul-Eater's Handwraps gemmed with Glowing Nightseye IconGlowing Nightseye and Veiled Noble Topaz IconVeiled Noble Topaz instead of Spellfire Gloves IconSpellfire Gloves.

Other Fire Mage Best in Slot (BiS) Lists

If you are starting out as a freshly-leveled Fire Mage, our pre-raid best in slot list is meant to give you an idea of non-raid items you can chase as a solo / pug player in preparation for raids.

Do note that items from Heroic dungeons or that require Primal Nether IconPrimal Nethers (which are obtained from Heroics) can be harder to get than raid items due to their daily lockout. Some Heroic dungeons are also harder than most of Karazhan.

If your character is still progressing through the content of Tier 4, then you may wish to consult its best in slot list instead.

Introduction: Legendaries in Shadowlands

By doing Torghast, you can craft Legendary items through the new Runecarving system. Many of these powers are large DPS boosts, or contain strong defensive effects. However, you are only able to wear one of these at a time, and you are gated in how many you can craft over time, so it is important to know which Legendary to use in which situation. Below we go over the best Legendary effects for each situation.

Runecarving OverviewMage Legendary Powers

2.

New Legendaries in 9.1 for Fire Mages

None of the Legendaries introduced in 9.1 are better at any scenario than existing Legendaries for Fire Mages.

3.

Best Legendaries for Fire Mage

Below we go into more detail regarding the best legendary for each situation. If a Legendary effect is not listed, you can assume it is worse than all other options that are listed.

4.

Best Overall Legendary for Fire Mage

Sun King's Blessing IconSun King's Blessing is generally the best choice for most situations, so for someone only crafting one Legendary, it is generally the best option. Sun King's Blessing has rotational changes, which we have listed below. If you want to see how this looks like in the overall rotation, check out the rotation page and check the Sun King's Blessing checkbox.

Fire Mage Rotation and Cooldowns

5.

Best Raiding Legendaries for Fire Mage

Raiding usually has tight DPS checks. The top DPS option for Fire Mages is Sun King's Blessing IconSun King's Blessing for almost all situations. Beyond that, Fire Mages have multiple Legendaries very close in DPS to each other. These include Disciplinary Command IconDisciplinary Command, Firestorm IconFirestorm, Fevered Incantation IconFevered Incantation and Temporal Warp IconTemporal Warp. All of these are within 0.5% of each other, with Disciplinary Command being the most flexible option.

The other potential DPS alternative is Temporal Warp IconTemporal Warp. This can be used if the fight has a specific moment in time where extra DPS is needed, and this moment in the fight is later than when your group uses Time Warp IconTime Warp, or during Time Warp itself. This Legendary is especially good if your group uses Time Warp (or a similar effect) right at the start of the fight, so you can use your own Time Warp together with the Time Warp of the group — they stack. If the fight then lasts more than 5 minutes, you can get at least 1 additional usage out of it. If you are the only person in the group who can supply the Time Warp (or similar) effect, this Legendary loses a lot of power and is not worth picking.

The final alternative Legendary option is Triune Ward IconTriune Ward, which can boost your survivability significantly. This is only an option when DPS is not a relevant requirement but you feel you really need more survivability.

6.

Best Mythic+ Legendaries for Fire Mage

Sun King's Blessing IconSun King's Blessing is generally the highest DPS option for Mythic+, as it does the best single-target DPS while only being a bit behind on AoE. It is especially advised during Tyrannical IconTyrannical weeks. If you want to focus primarily on AoE damage, Disciplinary Command IconDisciplinary Command is still ahead by a couple percent.

The other main DPS alternative is Temporal Warp IconTemporal Warp, however, this is only good if your group has someone else who can supply the Time Warp IconTime Warp (or similar) as well, and you use that other effect early on in the dungeon. If both of those conditions are met, Temporal Warp is a great option for Mythic+ to assist with specific, difficult pulls.

The final alternative Legendary option is Triune Ward IconTriune Ward, which can boost your survivability significantly. This is only an option when DPS is not a relevant requirement but you feel you really need more survivability. Especially in very high keys, you can get 1-shot by some mechanics, where Triune Ward can help you survive these 1-shots.

7.

Best Torghast Legendaries for Fire Mage

Triune Ward IconTriune Ward is a fantastic overall defensive option for Torghast.

Grisly Icicle IconGrisly Icicle is a great option when soloing Torghast, as the enemies will remain frozen for the entire duration of Frost Nova IconFrost Nova even when you are DPSing them, making it very easy to kite enemies and still do damage to them. When doing Torghast as a group, this effect is mostly useless because your group will break your freezes instantly, in which case Firestorm IconFirestorm or Fevered Incantation IconFevered Incantation is the best option. Additionally, if you have no issues surviving, you can also pick one of these DPS Legendaries.

8.

Rotation Changes with Fire Mage Legendaries

8.1.

Sun King's Blessing Rotation Changes

Sun King's Blessing IconSun King's Blessing activates Combustion IconCombustion for 6 seconds after consuming 8 Hot Streak IconHot Streak procs. If you already have Combustion active, it will extend your current Combustion by 6 seconds. To make the most of this, there are a couple of rotational changes to consider:

8.2.

Disciplinary Command Rotation Changes

To assist with using Disciplinary Command IconDisciplinary Command, we suggest this WeakAura.

8.3.

How to Activate Disciplinary Command

Disciplinary Command IconDisciplinary Command is a Legendary effect that greatly increases your Critical Strike damage after using a Frost, Arcane and Fire spell within 10 seconds. It does not matter in what order you cast these, as long as all 3 schools have been cast in the last 10 seconds. Below we go over the best ways to proc each part of this effect, ordered by the best way to activate that school:

8.4.

When to Activate Disciplinary Command

You want to activate Disciplinary Command IconDisciplinary Command right before Combustion IconCombustion, by casting a Frostbolt IconFrostbolt (or Frost Nova IconFrost Nova if you are unable to stand still for Frostbolt) and then going into your Combustion rotation. Outside of right before Combustion, you will want to activate it once between Combustions, by casting one of the Arcane triggers in the list above followed by one of the Frost triggers from above assuming you are running a 1-minute Combustion build. (Night Fae + Kindling IconKindling)

9.

What Slot Should Legendaries by Crafted For?

Generally speaking, you will want to craft legendaries for slots with the highest "stat budget", to maximize the stats you get from legendaries reaching the highest item level available. Below we have listed the items in order of stat budget:

  1. Helm, Chest, Legs
  2. Gloves, Belt, Boots, Shoulders
  3. Cloak, Bracers
  4. Neck, Rings

For people that actively clear Raiding, there are some situations where you might not want to do this. Since the last 2 bosses in Raiding drop higher item level loot, you will want to avoid crafting items for the slots dropped by these bosses. Additionally, you will want to avoid crafting Legendaries in slots that contain Domination Sockets. These slots are:

  • Helm (Domination Socket & higher item level)
  • Shoulders (Domination Socket & higher item level)
  • Chest (Domination Socket)
  • Wrists (Domination Socket & higher item level)
  • Belt (Domination Socket & higher item level)
  • Neck (higher item level)

The last 2 bosses also drop a Ring and Trinket, but this is not relevant for Legendary crafting, as you have 2 ring slots, and there are no Legendaries for the Trinket slots.

This leads us to the following list of Legendaries and what slot to craft them in:

My Honest Advice to Mages in TBC Classic

1.

Introduction

In this section, you will find information and guidance for each boss individually in the Eternal Palace raid as a Fire Mage. These are not complete encounter guides, but rather provide specific tips for the bosses as a Fire Mage.

2.

Fire Mage in The Eternal Palace

Fire Mage is looking to be a great pick in The Eternal Palace, due to some indirect buffs with the addition of Essences. It is now capable of delivering good single-target DPS, even on fights not primarily focused around execute DPS, while having "free" AoE or Cleave DPS due to Mastery: Ignite IconMastery: Ignite.

As a general rule, most of the raid is single-target or spread cleave. Fire can deal well with the single-target fights, but less so with the spread cleave fights.

Abyssal Commander Sivara

We advise you to use the following talents against Abyssal Commander Sivara.

We advise you to use the following essences against Abyssal Commander Sivara.

4.1.

Tips

This is a straightforward pure single-target encounter. When you have Frost Mark IconFrost Mark, make sure make sure to stutter step between your instant-cast Pyroblast IconPyroblasts and Meteor IconMeteors. This way, you will have to move less when you do not have any instant cast spells available.

Check the boss mod timers to avoid using Rune of Power IconRune of Power right before Inversion IconInversion, as you might have to move to the other side of the room when this happens.

For more information, please refer to our Abyssal Commander Sivara strategy guide.

We advise you to use the following talents against Blackwater Behemoth.

We advise you to use the following essences against Blackwater Behemoth.

5.1.

Tips

Make sure you are standing on the floor when using Rune of Power IconRune of Power, because using it while swimming above the floor can cause it to sometimes spawn above or below you, which means you will not get the buff.

For more information, please refer to our Blackwater Behemoth strategy guide.

Tips

A split single-target fight with some priority add focus during the intermissions.

During the intermission, focus down the Stormwraith and let Mastery: Ignite IconMastery: Ignite do the work for you on the Stormlings. Use Shimmer IconShimmer to negate the knockback of Gale Buffet IconGale Buffet.

We advise you to use the following essences against Lady Ashvane.

7.1.

Tips

If you are in a bad position to deal with Briny Bubble IconBriny Bubble properly, you can move out of the group and use Ice Block IconIce Block. This will avoid the bubble from spawning altogether.

The fight generally has odd Bloodlust IconBloodlust/Heroism IconHeroism/Time Warp IconTime Warp timers for Fire's cooldowns (usually around 1 minute, or 3 minutes into the fight) Try to plan your cooldowns with your raid's strategy in mind so they line up with Bloodlust/Heroism/Time Warp usage.

8.1.

Tips

This is a fairly straightforward fight for Fire Mages. Simply swap to the Zoatroid adds by single-targeting one of them down and letting Mastery: Ignite IconMastery: Ignite spread.

Make sure to watch your boss mod timer for Dribbling Ichor IconDribbling Ichor, and avoid placing a Rune of Power IconRune of Power when it is about to begin, as it will be hard to remain inside your Rune while the Dribbling Ichor is happening.

The Queen's Court

We advise you to use the following talents against The Queen's Court.

We advise you to use the following essences against The Queen's Court.

9.1.

Tips

If you get Frenetic Charge IconFrenetic Charge on you, but you / the raid is too low health to soak it together, or there are other reasons making it hard to soak this together, you can use Ice Block IconIce Block to soak it alone.

When you get Repeat Performance IconRepeat Performance, make sure you do not end up casting the same spell twice in a row. This is only really relevant for Fireball IconFireball. Most of the time, you should be able to avoid this by casting Fire Blast IconFire Blast while casting your second Fireball IconFireball. But if this is not possible, you should try to weave in other spells. Shimmer IconShimmer and Counterspell IconCounterspell are great because they can be used without losing any DPS, but still count as a spell to avoid the silence.

For more information, please refer to our The Queen's Court strategy guide.

Talents

It can be a small DPS gain to run Living Bomb IconLiving Bomb on this fight, if your group is very efficient at getting the Horrific Visions stacked on the boss. Otherwise the standard single target talents apply.

10.2.

Tips

For a Fire Mage, this fight is generally just a single target fight, with occasional swapping of targets. You should swap to Horrific Summoners, but the Horrific Visions should just be cleaved down.

Fire Mages are great at going down into the Delirium Realm IconDelirium Realm, especially when the boss is below 30% health (or close to). This is particularly true when running multiple Blaster Master IconBlaster Master traits, because the additional haste makes it possible to have extremely high uptime on the Blaster Master buff. However, it can be very challenging to play the Delirium Realm, because Scorch IconScorch is nearly instant, it can make it so you are getting Hot Streak IconHot Streak procs at very odd timings. The best way to avoid accidentally hardcasting Pyroblast IconPyroblasts is to always keep moving while the boss is below 30% health. If you are assigned to go down into the Delirium Realm, make sure you have your DPS cooldowns ready when going in. When down there, you should make sure to use Blazing Barrier IconBlazing Barrier on cooldown, because you will slowly die while in the realm, and the longer you can stay in there the more DPS you will do. If you are running defensive traits like Cauterizing Blink IconCauterizing Blink, you should also try to keep a high uptime on this buff by using Shimmer IconShimmer often. Keep in mind, Cauterize IconCauterize will not proc while in this realm, so you should not rely on Cauterize to heal you up. Additionally, do not forget to use Abyssal Healing Potion IconAbyssal Healing Potion and Healthstone IconHealthstone in this realm.

For more information, please refer to our Za'qul, Harbinger of Ny'alotha strategy guide.

We advise you to use the following talents against Queen Azshara.

We advise you to use the following essences against Queen Azshara.

11.1.

Talents and Essences for Queen Azshara for a Fire Mage

Overall, the standard single-target talents and Essences apply to this boss. However, if your group is struggling to kill the Azshara's Devoted, you can opt into a more AoE focused build, swapping to Living Bomb IconLiving Bomb, and potentially even swapping to Essence of the Focusing Iris IconEssence of the Focusing Iris, although the latter is not advised, since it is a sizeable DPS loss on the boss, so only consider this if your group truly cannot kill the adds without it.

11.2.

Tips

Azshara is a fight with a lot of things happening at the same time. A Fire Mage's main job will be single-target DPS, while cleaving down lower priority targets.

Optimizing your DPS on Azshara largely comes down to minimizing your movement, which can be hard due to all the mechanics going on. You need to keep a close eye on boss mod timers for mechanics like Arcane Detonation IconArcane Detonation to ensure you do not use cooldowns, such as Rune of Power IconRune of Power, right before it goes out.

When the Overzealous Hulk spawns, make sure to not use any crowd control abilities (like Dragon's Breath IconDragon's Breath, or even Flamestrike IconFlamestrike, since slows also count) to make sure a stronger crowd control ability can be used on it.

If you get the Essence of Azeroth IconEssence of Azeroth buff, you should simply spam Pyroblast IconPyroblasts as filler, instead of Fireball IconFireball or Scorch IconScorch. Make sure to use any remaining cooldowns like Rune of Power IconRune of Power before the 40 seconds are over, as you will die when it ends. Try to weave in any Fire Blast IconFire Blasts when you see a Heating Up IconHeating Up proc. If you are running Blaster Master IconBlaster Master traits, try to keep a good uptime on this as well, as the Fire Blasts are not as important for generating

Introduction

Mages have three very well balanced PvE talent trees. This guide will deal with the Fire talents. If you wish to learn more about the other specs, try our Arcane and Frost guides. Each Mage spec has their own strengths and weaknesses.

Fire Mages underwent a few chances in The Burning Crusade. Most important is the change in the Ignite IconIgnite mechanic, which is now a personal debuff for every Mage. The new talents Molten Fury IconMolten Fury, Empowered Fireball IconEmpowered Fireball and Dragon's Breath IconDragon's Breath are the other key changes in the Fire tree rework Blizzard has done. Molten Fury increases your damage done against targets with low health, which is excellent for bosses with high health. Empowered Fireball gives your Fireball more damage from the stat Spell Damage, and Dragon's Breath is a new and very powerful frontal cone AoE ability. Playing with Fire IconPlaying with Fire and Pyromaniac IconPyromaniac are also two new damage increasing talents. You will learn more about all these abilities in much greater detail in the Fire Mage PvE Spells and Fire Mage PvE Talents sections.

If you are looking to level a Mage, you can find our leveling guides below. You can level as either Arcane and Frost Mage, or you can simply go with the Fire leveling spec.

Strengths and Weaknesses

3.

Best Races for Fire Mage

The Burning Crusade lets Mages choose between the races BloodElf, Troll, and Undead if Horde. The Alliance offers you Draenei, Gnome, and Human.

3.1.

Blood Elf

Blood Elf is the new Horde race choice, players can choose. Their racials are still quite good. Mana Tap and Arcane Torrent restore Mana and also grant the Mage a 2 seconds AoE silence effect, which can be used as an emergency Counterspell. The additional magic resistances decrease magic damage taken slightly and as arcane beings, Blood Elves have an increased Enchanting skill.

3.2.

Troll

Trolls are the best PvE Horde race for Mages. The passive damage increase to beasts is nice to have while leveling and for farming beasts, but the real deal is the increased cast speed from Berserking. The more Health you have lost, the faster this ability lets you cast, up to a maximum of 30% faster casting. Further, troll Mages are able to generate small amounts of Health during combat, an ability no other race has.

  • Berserking IconBerserking — Increases your casting and attack speed by 10% to 30%. At full Health the speed increase is 10% with a greater effect up to 30% if you are badly hurt when you activate Berserking. Lasts 10 seconds.
  • Beast Slaying IconBeast Slaying — Damage dealt versus Beasts increased by 5%.
  • Regeneration IconRegeneration — Health regeneration rate increased by 10%. 10% of total Health regeneration may continue during combat.

3.3.

Undead

The racial traits of Undead are most the powerful in PvP combat, but also have niche uses in PvE. They can cancel Charm, Fear and Sleep effects or become immune to them before these effects even apply. Together with Ice Block, this is a very strong ability. The typical Undead hunger for fresh bodies lets them feast on their enemies' corpses, restoring Health very quickly. Being able to breathe 3 times longer underwater than any other race, the Undead Mage does not need to fear from drowning while doing underwater farming or questing, and Undead are more resistant to Shadow damage.

3.4.

Draenei

Just as Undead, Draenei have a slightly higher resistance to Shadow spells. Their Gemcutting ability increases their Jewelcrafting skill. The two most important racial traits are Inspiring Presence and Gift of the Naaru. Inspiring Presence increases the Spell Hit chance of players grouped with you and Gift of the Naaru is a heal over time, that scales with your level, usually used in niche situations, such as healing while running away from enemies.

3.5.

Human

Perception is a very strong cooldown to detect any stealth class around you, giving you a massive advantage in PvP. The Human Spirit is very good for Arcane Mages and can, in some situations, make Human the better choice for Arcane Mages than Gnome (more about that in the Arcane Mage guide). Diplomacy is useful any time you do a reputation grind.

  • Perception IconPerception — Dramatically increases stealth detection for 20 seconds.
  • The Human Spirit IconThe Human Spirit — Spirit increased by 10%.
  • Diplomacy IconDiplomacy — Reputation gains increased by 10%.

3.6.

Gnome

Just as they were in Classic, Gnomes are considered overall to be the best race for Alliance. Their Intellect boost from Expansive Mind is good for all three Mage specs, especially for Arcane, and the Escape Artist is the best Mage racial trait for PvP, as it is instant in TBC on a low 1.75-minute cooldown. The extra Arcane Resistance trait helps in a few PvE situations, where Arcane damage is coming in, such as tanking the Mage boss on the Illidari Council. The bonus to Engineering is just as handy as the other races' profession bonuses.

3.7.

Conclusion

For the Horde, Troll is clearly the best PvE Mage race, due to Berserking IconBerserking being the only viable racial trait. In PvP, Undead are king with Will of the Forsaken IconWill of the Forsaken and Cannibalize IconCannibalize.

For the Alliance, in PvP, Gnomes are the best choice with Escape Artist IconEscape Artist. For PvE, the decision making is not as easy. Draeneis come with the 1% Spell Hit racial for the whole group, which by itself is absolutely phenomenal, however, it goes down to no value as soon as there is a Shaman in your group, and generally most classes will be Hit capped on trash mobs. So this racial basically is only useful on bosses, if you do not have a Shaman in your group. As Intellect also increases the Critical Strike chance, Gnomes are viable for all Mage specs. Arcane Mages, which will be on top of the food chain when it comes to Mage specs in TBC, benefit even more from the additional Expansive Mind IconExpansive Mind Intellect, as it is their main stat. However, if you play in a guild that chain pulls, not allowing you to drink, a bigger Mana pool will only mean you have to drink longer, thus making The Human Spirit IconThe Human Spirit the better option, especially paired with Innervate IconInnervates and Improved Divine Spirit IconImproved Divine Spirit.

TLDR: For speedrunning as Arcane Mage with support, Human is the better PvE race, otherwise Gnome is.

Best Professions for Fire Mages

Engineering is a very potent profession. Explosives, such as Dense Dynamite IconDense Dynamite and Super Sapper Charge IconSuper Sapper Charge, are not subject to the AoE cap and can be woven into your rotation. Engineering also offers access to various versions of the Destruction Holo-gogs IconDestruction Holo-gogs throughout the expansion and the Zapthrottle Mote Extractor IconZapthrottle Mote Extractor, used for farming motes.

Enchanting offers Enchant Ring - Spellpower IconEnchant Ring - Spellpower enchants for your rings, which is considered to be very strong. These enchants stop working if you drop Enchanting and can only be applied to your own rings. Another benefit from Enchanting is, that you can Disenchant IconDisenchant most green, blue and epic quality gear items, which can be used for other enchants or can be sold. This, however, requires your Enchanting skill to be leveled. Follow our TBC Enchanting guide if you want to learn more about the Enchanting profession.

Tailoring gives access to several very strong Tailoring items and set bonuses. At Tailoring level 350, wearing both Spellstrike Hood IconSpellstrike Hood and Spellstrike Pants IconSpellstrike Pants will give your spells a 5% chance to increase your Spell Damage by 92 for 10 seconds. Fireball IconFireball, your main spell has a high Spell Damage scaling, so it will benefit even more from this set bonus.

Specializing in Spellfire Tailoring IconSpellfire Tailoring is possible at Tailoring 300. Spellfire Tailoring is required to wear the Spellfire set that consists of Spellfire Robe IconSpellfire Robe, Spellfire Gloves IconSpellfire Gloves and Spellfire Belt IconSpellfire Belt. The 3-set bonus of the Spellfire set will give you 7% of your Intellect as Spell Damage. The whole Spellfire set has very high Fire damage.

Another bonus of Spellfire Tailoring IconSpellfire Tailoring is that, whenever crafting a Spellcloth IconSpellcloth, Spellfire specialized tailors will get two instead of one Spellcloth IconSpellcloth. Spellcloth is used to craft both, the Spellstrike and Spellfire set.

At Tailoring level 375, players with exalted reputation with Aldor, can create the best legs enchant for healers, Golden Spellthread IconGolden Spellthread. Players exalted with Scryers can make the best caster legs enchant Runic Spellthread IconRunic Spellthread. Three other, very sought after Tailoring crafts are Girdle of Ruination IconGirdle of Ruination, Cloak of the Black Void IconCloak of the Black Void and Bracers of Havok IconBracers of Havok. These items can be worn but also be sold to other players, making Tailoring a very convenient profession not only for PvE purposes, but also for gold making.

Leatherworking needs to be mentioned, as Leatherworkers can make different drums with beneficial effects for 30 seconds. However, in TBC Classic, players receive a Tinnitus IconTinnitus debuff whenever they benefit from a drum effect. This is a 2-minute duration effect, that prevents you from getting another drum effect. This debuff was not in the game originally, and was recently added by Blizzard. It greatly decreases the value of drums and therefore Leatherworking.

If you would like to learn more about how your profession of choice can be used to supplement your goldmaking, along with a variety of other means to bolster your income, see our full goldmaking guide linked below:
