Welcome to’s Magicka Sorcerer Build PvE, Apothis, for the Elder Scrolls Online! This build is intended for veteran dungeons, trials and general PvE.

Magicka Sorcerer is one of the best Magicka class for beginners with a fairly easy rotation. Sustain might be a bit tough though. The new champion point system has brought up Dual Wield setups, which is slightly better on average assuming melee range is possible. Inferno staff is still good with 1~2k DPS loss, but having the flexibility to play at range.

Gears and skills listed in the table are not the best in every situation. Make sure to check out the gear and skills explanation to know how they work or why I used certain combinations.

Gear Set Explanation and Alternatives

  • Beginner Setup: Law of Julianos and Mother’s Sorrow are the easiest and cheapest combination to obtain once you reach CP160. For Mother’s Sorrow you can purchase blue jewelries if you cannot afford purple or gold yet. The ‘beginner’ setup already allows you to clear veteran maelstrom arena or meet most vet trials’ DPS requirement, make sure you don’t underestimate them! Once you get vMA inferno staff, swap out Julianos inferno staff on the back bar for an ‘intermediate’ setup.
  • Zaan: A melee single-target monster set providing the highest DPS if you can stay at melee range. If you need to stay at ranged most of the time, pick one of the other monster sets mentioned above or 2 different pieces with spell crit bonus e.g. Iceheart + Slimecraw
  • Iceheart: A defensive monster helm which is very useful when you are doing progression trials or dungeons. For those who enter vMA the first time, it might be a good choice.
  • Maw of Infernal: Another Monster giving extra burning and good DPS potential. However, it might be annoying to Melee DPS or tanks.
  • Mother’s Sorrow: A staple magicka set for magicka DPS providing a lot of crit.
  • Law of Julianos: A crafted set that requires 6 traits researched. Best beginner set for all magicka classes, also good enough for all end-game PVE contents in case you do not have any other gear sets mentioned below
  • Perfected False God’s Devotion: Another set that can be used in any situation, providing an 8% cost reduction in magicka abilities and restore magicka when you kill an enemy. The major expedition is also useful in certain situations.
  • Mantle of Siroria: The strongest Magicka DPS set if you can maintain siroria stacks, replace false god’s devotion if want to use it. It provides 520 spell damage at full stack.
  • Medusa: Another crit set for Magicka DPS, but it’s a heavy armor set, which means you either use on Jewelry + Front bar weapon, or Jewelry + 2 Body pieces. Either pick Medusa or Mother’s sorrow at the same time and pair it with other sets. For Magsorcs spending more time on front bar than other classes, using Medusa weapon is a good choice and you can have the flexibility to run 7 or 6 light armor pieces for more sustain. However, you have to gold the jewelry and spend 150 transmutes because the default traits are not optimal (Healthy), but you gain one more flex spot for any skills you like e.g. using 2 pet build.

Other Important Notes

  • If you want to use any mythic item sets like Harpooner’s Wading Kilt / Death Dealer’s Fete, replace shoulder piece with Bahsei’s Mania
  • If you can’t keep your Magicka low, replace Bahsei’s Mania with Mantle of Siroria
  • If you don’t have Medusa Inferno staff yet, use Mother’s Sorrow instead of Medusa but you will need to slot Channeled Acceleration / Barbed Trap.
  • Non-perfect gear is absolutely fine with less than 2% DPS difference.

All points into Magicka.

Main Bar – Fire Staff – Daedric Prey, Crystal Fragments, Elemental Weapon, Summon Twilight Matriarch, Mystic Orb, Flawless Dawnbreaker

Back Bar – Fire Staff – Unstable Wall of Elements, Channeled Acceleration, Hardened Ward, Summon Twilight Matriarch, Boundless Storm, Greater Storm Atronach

Alternative Skills:

  • Elemental Rage: Use this when you need a burst AOE ultimate
  • Reviving Barrier: Use this is you want another 10% magicka recovery when you are on your front bar
  • Consuming Trap: Use this in trash fights for more sustain.
  • Bounded Aegis: Use this on the front bar for more max magicka.
  • Summon Twilight Tormentor: Use this if you want more damage.

NOTE: These are the skills I prefer for any type of content, if you want an optimal DPS setup (usually being more aggressive and requires better knowledge to the fight), check out the parse video at the end.

Spell Power Potions (Spell Crit, Spell Damage, Magicka Restoration)
Cornflower, Ladys Smock, Water Hyacinth

All class passives, All Destruction Staff passives, All Light Armor passives, All Mages Guild passives, Banished the Wicked in Fighters Guild skill line, All Heavy armor passives, All Psijic Order Passives, All Undaunted passives, All Racial passives, Medicinal use in alchemy skill line (one of the most important passives in crafting for this build)

Suggestions to improve sustain (not a must if you feel satisfied with your sustain):

  • 1 magicka recovery glyph on jewelry if you are using High Elf / Dark Elf or any other races without any sustain passives, but make sure they are not on infused jewelries

We are using a dynamic rotation to maximize our DPS, so there’s no static rotation. It might take a bit of time to get used to it, but I highly recommend practicing a dynamic rotation so that you won’t mess up your rotation even if you have to do mechanics. When you solo parse, replace your shield with elemental drain.

Channeled Acceleration > Weapon Swap > Light Attack > Daedric Prey > Weapon Swap > Light Attack > Blockade of Fire > Boundless Storm> Weapon Swap > Light Attack > Mystic Orb > Light Attack> Spam Elemental Weapon with Light Attack and reapply DOTs or Buffs once they fall off

  • Reapply DOTs and Buffs just before they end. The only DOT you should NEVER reapply earlier is Daedric Prey. For the other DOTs or Buffs, you may reapply slightly earlier
  • Crystal Fragments take priority over elemental weapon, replace one elemental weapon when it procs
  • Greater Storm Atronach is our primary ultimate due to the synergy (Major Berserk) it provides the group. Make sure you place it at a place where the other DDs could use the synergy! (Bad Example: Pads of vMOL last boss)

Gear Review & Alternative Setups

Bahsei's Mania, Diamonds Victory, 1x Slimecraw andHarpooner's Wading Kilt are the best in slot gear for damage parsing. The Dual Wield frontbar is 1k to 2k higher than doing an Inferno Staff on the frontbar.

If sustain is too good when wearing Bahsei's Mania, you can try not taking any Synergies or can even take out sustain passives. If Bahsei is too difficult to manage in terms of Magicka management, you can drop it for Siroria as Siroria is the next best option if you can keep up the stacks in actual content.

If you need a skill slot for a Shield or Mistform or anything else, you can drop Barbed Trap and run Medusa instead. If you can't run Dual Wield regardless of the reason, your Spell Critical rating will be a little low when wearing Bahsei's with Diamond's Victory. Consider dropping a set -typically Diamond's Victory but it's situational - for Mother's Sorrow or Medusa.

You ideally want to keep a set with Minor Slayer on whenever possible. False God's Devotion is better than what many assume at first glance because of the Critical bonuses if you can't run Bahsei's or Siroria.

Depending on the fights, if you can't keep up Harpooner's Wading Kilt stacks, the next best option is using the monster set Z'aan's. If Z'aan's doesn't work, next best option after is 1x Slimecraw with the mythic Death Dealer's Fete.

You always want to do Bloodthirsty on your jewelry traits regardless of sets. In terms of weapon traits and enchantments, we've found Precise on both Daggers to be a little better than doing Nirnhoned + Precise. For fights where you need to utilize the Prismatic Onslaught enchantment, you can do an Infused Prismatic Onslaught on the backbar with Flame/Poison on the frontbar or just Flame on the frontbar if you're using an Inferno staff.

Champion Points Review

Your Warfare Slottables are primarily Backstabber, Fighting Finesse, Master-at-Arms and Deadly Aim. If you can't run Backstabber, for example in Veteran Sunspire or other places where you may not be able to have Backstabber active, run Thaumaturge instead.

Slimecraw: obtained in Wayrest Sewers 1, Veteran Dungeon

  • (1 item) Adds 771 Critical Chance

WHY? provides the most critical chance per piece and ideal when using a mythic instead of a monster helm.

Perfected Bahsei’s Mania: obtained in Rockgrove trial Blackwood Chapter.

  • (2 items) Adds 129 Spell Damage
  • (3 items) Gain Minor Slayer at all times, increasing your damage done to Dungeon, Trial, and Arena Monsters by 5%.
  • (4 items) Adds 657 Spell Critical
  • (5 items) Adds 129 Spell Damage, Increases your damage done to non-player enemies by up to 15% based on your missing Magicka. Current value: 0%

WHY? running two medium with low sustain provides incredible amount of damage with the hybridization of stats.  Flex this out for  either Mother’s Sorrow, Burning Spell Weave, Scathing Mage if you do not have trials gear.

Harpooner’s Wading Kilt: Mythic obtained by collecting five pieces:

  • Murkmire – Wolf-Tail Sash Lead – Murkmire Foul Fishing Spots
  • Blackwood – Kothringi-Cut Leather Lead – World Boss Death Wart, World Boss Sul-Xan Ritualists
  • Shadowfen – Bog-Blue Jasper Fetish Lead – Ruins of Mazzatun Dungeon last boss
  • Shadowfen – Tide-Glass Beads Lead – Waterplants (Nirnroot etc), Pure Water Nodes
  • Bal Foyen – Silverweave Cord Lead – Covenant Enemies, most likely all enemies

Set Bonus

  • (1 item) Dealing direct damage grants you a stack of Hunter’s Focus for 1 minute, up to 10 stacks max. You can only gain 1 stack of Hunter’s Focus per second. Each stack of Hunter’s Focus increases your Critical Chance by 125 and your Critical Damage by 1%. Taking direct damage removes 5 stacks of Hunter’s Focus, up to once per second. Removing Harpooner’s Wading Kilt removes all stacks of Hunter’s Focus.

WHY? incredible damage if playing in a coordinated group with little pressure on you especially at range.  Feel free to flex monster helm like Zaan’s, drop the one piece Slimecraw for a simpler setup.

[FLEX] (if not running Harpooner’s use Monster helm below)

  • Zaan’s: obtained in Veteran Scalecaller Peak – great of single target
    • (1 item) Adds 657 Spell Critical
    • (2 items) When you damage a nearby enemy with a Light or Heavy Attack, you have a 33% chance to create a beam of fire that will connect you to your enemy as long as you remain within 8 meters of them. The beam deals 305 Flame Damage every 1 second to your enemy for 6 seconds. Every second, this damage increases by 100%. This effect can occur every 18 seconds and scales off the higher of your Weapon or Spell Damage.

Medusa: obtained in dungeon Arx Corinium.

  • (2 items) Adds 657 Spell Critical
  • (3 items) Adds 657 Spell Critical
  • (4 items) Adds 657 Spell Critical
  • (5 items) Adds 892 Spell Critical, Gain Minor Force at all times, increasing your Critical Damage by 10%

Why? this set gives us a lot of critical and minor force freeing up a bar slot though can be difficult to obtain.  Swap in a craftable set like Julianos if this is difficult for you to obtain.

Perfected Crushing Wall (Maelstrom): obtained in Veteran Maelstrom arena.

  • (2 items) Adds 1190 Spell Penetration, Your Light and Heavy Attacks deal an additional 1353 damage to enemies in your Wall of Elements.

Why? makes our back bar unstable wall of elements skill add massive damage to our light attack weaving and is priority to collect.

Elder Scrolls Online: 10 Best Sorcerer Builds, Ranked (For 2021)

Sorcerers in The Elder Scrolls universe summons the elements and the weather to do their bidding. Other sorcerers that dabble in the Daedric arts can summon magical armor and Daedric sorcery to eliminate their foes. Players of The Elder Scrolls Onlinelooking for a powerful spellcaster can create a Sorcerer, which skillsets also depend on the element they use.

RELATED: Dungeons & Dragons: Skills Every Ranger Should Know (& Some To Avoid)

Moreover, Sorcerers offer a wide range of spells for the party. Their Daedric Summoning gives them access to offensive spells that can stun and interrupt opponents. Their Dark Magic debuffs enemies and buffs allies, while their Storm Calling wreaks havoc on enemies with offensive spells. These skill trees, combined with the right build, can make Sorcerers powerhouses for any Elder Scrolls Online party.

Updated October 20, 2021 by Erik Petrovich: The Sorcerer class in Elder Scrolls Online is one of the more powerful DPS builds, thanks mostly to its ease-of-access for new players and its relatively simple ability rotations. When it comes to PvP Sorcerers tend to be squishy (although of course every class can use every weapon and armor type) – there are many builds out there that better equip the Sorcerer to take on the front lines of the Three Banners War, and there are plenty that make the Sorcerer a force to be reckoned with in PvE content too. For many modern builds it appears that the dual Destruction Staff setup is used more often than others, thanks to its raw DPS output, though there are some builds that use melee weapons and even the Bow effectively too.

10 Windwalker Sorcerer

Sorcerers have the ability to contribute significant single-target and AoE damage to opponents. This build from AlcastHQ relies on light attacks to build DPS. Both its skillsets rely on the additional firepower from the Unstable Clannfear. Moreover, both skillsets also have Bound Armaments to give a physical damage boost.

The dual-wield skillset relies on Whirling Blades and Deadly Cloak to envelop the Windwalker with defenses, with Rapid Strikes and Flawless Dawnbreaking adding an attack boost. The bow skillset makes use of Endless Hail, Hurricane, and Barbed Trap to immobilize and debuff opponents, with a Greater Storm Atronach providing a damage boost.

9 Apothis PvE Sorcerer

Sorcerers are very well suited for DPS in dungeons and other PvE environments thanks to their wide range of damaging abilities throughout their class tree. The Apothis build from DottzGaming capitalizes on the damage-oriented skillset of the Sorcerer alongside the use of the perfected Bahsei's Mania and Medusa sets, both of which increase Spell Critical and Spell Damage.

The build uses a dual-wielding Fire Staff setup, granting use of the Destruction Staff skill tree in both the front and back bars. The front bar is focused on damage with abilities like Crystal Fragments and the Ultimate Flawless Dawnbreaker, while the Back Bar is more defensive and crowd-control oriented with abilities like Unstable Wall of Elements and Hardened Ward.

8 Mystic MagSorc

Like many other Sorcerer builds in The Elder Scrolls Online, the Mystic build from AlcastHQ is almost entirely damage-oriented. It makes use of a dual-Destruction Staff setup, like the Apothis build, though it relies on Mother's Sorrow instead of the Bahsei's Mania set, though they both provide similar benefits. It, too, uses a Fire Staff in both the front and back bars.

The two builds diverge significantly when it comes to abilities. The front bar of the Mystic build uses Volatile Familar and the Ultimate Shooting Star, while the back bar uses other support and defense-oriented abilities if needed. Additionally, it uses the Perfected Crushing Wall weapon type, granting extra damage to enemies within the Sorcerer's Wall of Elements.

7 Werewolf Sorcerer

Werewolf Sorcerers synergize the properties of both Sorcerers and Werewolves. Moreover, this Werewolf Sorcerer build gets the best DPS in terms of Werewolf Combinations. Both skillsets of Werewolf Sorcerers make use of Bound Armaments and Unstable Clannfear. These spells give Werewolf Sorcerers a much-needed damage boost.

Their dual wield spec relies on Whirling Blades, Barbed Trap, and Rapid Strikes, with the Ultimate Werewolf Berserker to strike them down as a wolf. Meanwhile, Werewolf Sorcerers can use bows to cast AoE attacks such as Endless Hail, Hurricane, and Dark Deal. Their Ultimate lets them summon a Greater Storm Atronach for massive AoE damage.

6 Solo MagSorc

The Solo MagSorc serves as the solo PVE setup from AlcastHQ. This build boasts great heals and shielding to deflect most damage. Moreover, both its skillsets use the Summon Volatile Familiar for support. The Destruction Staff mainbar adds defense with Hardened Ward and Consuming Trap.

It also makes use of Crystal Fragments, Force Pulse, and the Ultimate Shooting Star for devastating damage. Meanwhile, the Destruction Staff secondary skillset buffs the player with Elemental Drain and Critical Surge, and Unstable Wall of Elements and the Ultimate Greater Storm Atronach provide AoE damage.

5 Solo StamSorc

The Solo StamSorc optimizes the Sorcerer's abilities for solo play. This build from AlcastHQ, when in tandem with the Briarheart Set, can benefit greatly from buffs and healing from Critical Surge and Dark Deal. Its 2H mainbar buffs with Bound Armaments, Echoing Vigor, and Brawler. It also deals powerful AOE with Reverse Slice, Wrecking Blow, and Flawless Dawnbreaker.

Meanwhile, the bow secondary utilizes Endless Hail, Hurricane, Razor Caltrops, and the Ultimate Greater Storm Atronach for very painful AoE surges. Rotation-wise, this build guarantees there are enough buffs to ensure AoE attacks stay deadly throughout an encounter.

4 Capacitor Sorcerer Tank

Capacitor Sorcerers take full advantage of their recovery abilities to cast spells that and aid allies. Moreover, their minions and defensive spells provide great support. This Capacitor Sorcerer build by AlcastHQ reinforces a Sorcerer's tank potential with its S&B main skillset. Defensive Stance and Ult Shield Discipline enable Sorcerers to go full tank. Meanwhile, Heroic Slash and Pierce Armor deal moderate damage.

Their Destruction Staff skillset fully buffs the Capacitor Sorcerer with Boundless Storm, Inner Rage, and Dark Deal. Meanwhile, they can use Elemental Blockade and Aggressive Warhorn to boost attack and defenses. Interestingly, both skillsets make use of the Unstable Clannfear for the extra ally.

3 Boundless PvP DPS

PvP in The Elder Scrolls Online is a game type all its own, with many players dedicating entire builds and characters solely to dishing out the most damage they can against other players in Cyrodil. The Boundless build from Hack the Minotaur gives Sorcerers a more than competent presence in PvP, relying on the Armor of the Trainee and Domihaus to round out the Sorcerer's abilities. It also has the option to use the Death Dealer's Fete ring, which increases resource regeneration based on the length of time the player spends out of combat.

It uses a Destruction Staff, specifically a Fire Staff, in the front bar for damage alongside a Restoration Staff in the back bar, for self-sustain and a boost to defense. Abilities that summon the Twilight matriarch and the Storm Atronach bring boundless support with this build, which can help distract enemies while a Sorcerer buffs themself (or heals themself) before getting back into the fray.

2 Surge Sorcerer Healer

Surge Sorcerers enable players to use their slate of recovery spells to bolster allies' magicka and health recovery. Both of their skillsets make use of the Twilight Matriarch, which can both attack and heal. This build by AlcastHQ first uses a Restoration Staff for their regenerative abilities. Radiating Regeneration and Empowered Healing grant healing. Empowered Ward and Combat Prayer provide shields and added attack. The Ultimate Absorption Field gives a quick heal.

The Destruction Staff skillset grants decent AOE with Liquid Lightning and Elemental Blockade. The Elemental Drain and Energy Orb grant magickasteal and recovery. Lastly, the ult Aggressive Warhorn significantly boosts ally attacks.

1 Summoner Sorcerer

Summoner Sorcerers utilize their rotations to generate massive single-target and AOE damage, with magicka shields offering decent protection. This build by AlcastHQ has two skillsets that summons a Volatile Familiar and the Twilight Tormentor as part of its main damage component.

Its Shock Staff mainbar debuffs opponents with Daedric Prey while offering heals with Mystic Orb. Additionally, it uses Crystal Fragments and the ult Shooting Star to cause devastating AOE. Meanwhile, its Shock Staff secondary skillset provides protection with Empowered Ward, with Unstable Wall of Elements and Lightning Flood providing decent AOE. The Greater Storm Atronach summon can pick off most enemies with the right timing.
