Latest election results for St. Augustine and St. Johns County in Florida

After 14 days of early voting, Election Day is the final day Florida residents can head to the polls to cast votes on local and state races and the presidential election.

Florida is a battleground state and its 29 Electoral College votes play a major role in deciding the next president of the United States.

Presidential candidates Donald Trump and Joe Biden made Florida a frequent stop on the campaign trail. They battled from Pensacola to Miami, with events aimed at seniors in Fort Myers, veterans in Tampa, Puerto Rican voters outside Orlando and swing voters along the Interstate 4 corridor.

Voters will cast their ballots on several high-profile state constitutional amendments this year, along with a handful of competitive congressional races that could impact the balance of power in Congress.

County st primary results johns

Election 3 things we learned in St. Johns County

While there are still some national issues to be sorted out, the general election for races here in St. Johns County provided some pretty clear answers on Tuesday.

Here are some things we learned from the results:

People wait to vote at the Solomon Calhoun Community Center in West Augustine on Tuesday.

· The people here will vote. The county approached 85% turnout, according to the Supervisor of Elections. But that's not really surprising for this county.

In the general election, more than 80% of the registered voters participated. It was better than 75% in

What's most interesting about this year is that just 26, votes were cast on Election Day. That means 85% of those who voted in this county did so through mail-in ballots or early voting. Was it the pandemic, enthusiasm or sheer convenience that triggered the behavior? Probably all of the above. It's clear people are taking advantage of different ways to participate in the democratic process.

Erika Ward, chief deputy supervisor of elections, Bobbie MacDonald and Supervisor of Elections Vicky Oakes process ballots at the elections office in St. Augustine on Tuesday.

· The Republican Party is in control in this county. For the most part, Democrats don't even run in partisan races here, and when they do, they get crushed.

That trend continued this year. Democrat Joe McAnarney challenged the relatively unknown Christian Whitehurst (no previous elected positions, runs small business in Jacksonville) to no avail. Whitehurst, who ousted incumbent Jimmy Johns in the primary, won the general election by 30 points.

The Democrats didn't do any better in the Florida Legislature races as people mostly voted along party lines. Rep. Cyndi Stevenson, Rep. Paul Renner and Sen. Travis Hutson all coasted to victory. Now, their opponents were not overly compelling. Only Adam Morley, who lost to Renner, is someone who lives and campaigned here. But he's also never been in an elected office.

St. Johns County Supervisor of Elections Vicky Oakes, right, talks to members of her staff as election results are received in her office on Election Night.

· People in St. Augustine wanted change, sort of. One of the few races for major offices that had some drama was the St. Augustine City Commission.

Leanna Freeman was ousted by Barbara Blonder after 12 years in office. It happens sometimes as voters seek a fresh perspective. It's similar to Nancy Shaver's victory over incumbent Joe Boles in Boles had been mayor for eight years.

But it wasn't all change as Roxanne Horvath held on to her seat on the Commission, defeating challenger Wade Ross by 2, votes.
